I admit ... I'm struggling with the 2020 Paralympic Games

Tuned into Day 1 of the 2020 Paralympic Games.

The first event I caught was the gold medal cycle 3,000 m pursuit (from memory). The pinnacle event to proclaim the best in the world with the discipline.

Sadly, less then a contest. The Silver medalist was lapped by the winner ... humm.

Two swimmers, gold and bronze medalists fronted up to the cameras and, in the interview claimed themselves to be elite athletes ... humm.

Yes, I understand it's a deeply personal achievement, firstly to overcome and compete despite their disability but, for me, in general, a sporting spectacle, it's not ...

Spanish official fined for fielding athletes without disabilities at Paralympics

The scandal broke in November 2000 when Carlos Ribagorda, a member of Spain’s gold medal-winning intellectually handicapped basketball team in Sydney, claimed that he and other athletes in categories such as track and field, table tennis and swimming were not mentally deficient.

“Of the 200 Spanish athletes at Sydney at least 15 had no type of physical or mental handicap — they didn’t even pass medical or psychological examinations,” he wrote in the magazine Capital just days after the Paralympics ended.

Ribargorda said he had played for the Spanish Paralympic basketball team for over two years but had no mental handicap.

Surely even considering doing something like that could ironically indicate a mental disability.

Either indicate a mental disability or being a complete and utter coont.

For me the paralympics is like “The emperors new clothes” - it’s a shit show but the pc brigade just have to show support.

I just can’t get excited watching bits of people bobbing about in the water or people with spare parts wobbling around on the track.

Goalball ... the Paraolympic sport where everyone is equal.

Designed for those with various stages of sight loss ... so, to make it equal, they make everyone totally blind !

First they tape their eyes off, then don goggles for total vision impairment.

Goalball is a team sport played indoors by athletes with vision impairment. The object of the game is to roll the ball into the opponent’s goal while the opposing players try to block the ball with their bodies. Bells inside the ball help orientate the players by indicating the direction of the oncoming ball.

Considering what the PC brigade is up to now, I welcome the cripple pity with open arms.

Its not about winning its about overcoming shit that life deals out and for some it adds meaning to their lives. If it does that it has succeeded. Besides, I doubt their blind friends bothered to watch.

I worked with Special Olympics for many a year. I can't stir up much enthusiasm for the games. There just doesn't seem to be an appetite for it these days. Still, overall an excellent thing bringing meaning into the life of tens of thousands. I don't begrudge the taxpayers sending these teams overseas.

I don't begrudge it, and I have tremendous respect for the 'para-athletes'. But neither do I spend much time at all watching it. I don't even watch womens sport.

I've been thinking that myself. I think there will come a day, hopefully soon, when we don't describe people as Lesbian, gay, trans, etc and hopefully about that time we will start seeing the person not the handicap. Most paralympians see them themselves as athletes first and foremost. We've come a long way from the Jerry Lewis telethons and thank goodness.

    Seems a bit daft really.

    A bit over accommodating.

Like a speech contest for the dumb.
"No sir, don't use your finger or your thumb".

Not much of a fan of watching sport (Stoke excluded),
But it must be great to be able to compete on a level playing field.

"Fuck this, I'm shit at football".
"Tape me eyes up, I might get in the limpics"

    "How's your hearing Dave?".
"I know i'm nearing Dave, any chance of a bandage. Me leg's just sprouted?"

Could we not say the same thing about the Olympics last month, that the disabled LGBTQIABCDEFG (ad infinitum) were competing last month? After all, no one is average and no one is physically perfect. We all carry with us physical limitations of some sort. In fact, there have been many "disabled" athletes competing in the Olympics.

So if we are having a special Olympics for one group based on a defined disability, whatever that may be, why can't we have it based on a defined sex or a grouping of them? One games for the lesbians, one for the gays, one games for the bisexuals, etc as nauseum. I hope you see the absurdity in all of this.

If you get the chance, one event is brilliant to watch, the Wheelchair rugby.

It's a combination of Dodge-em cars, fierce competition, chess (strategy), team tactics and close games.

For me, it's that good, I'd part with my hard-earned coin to watch them play.

That's not what he said. And even if someone did think that, do all people enjoy their jobs? And if they don't, are they suppose to tell people around them, including their boss(es), that they are "shit" to their face?
