Brisbane announced as 2032 Olympic Games host city at IOC meeting in Tokyo

    Key points:

    • The Games will be staged across more than 30 venues
    • A refurbished Gabba, complete with its own underground rail stop, will be the Games hub
    • Two athletes villages will be constructed — in Brisbane and the Gold Coast

The decision was confirmed after a meeting of International Olympic Committee delegates in Tokyo this evening.

During final deliberations, Brisbane (Queensland, Australia ... for snubs ) faced little opposition with offers from India, Indonesia, Qatar, Spain and Germany failing to make it past the IOC board stage.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

I know this cute Iranian milf in Brisbane who is dying to fuck me but I've always avoided it because she's guaranteed to be a Klingon.

    Congratulations

Hope the queenslanders are as keen on it, as the politicians are.

It might come with a bill.

I’d bring more than just a set of sheets, your sheets will need PPE on any of Loppers beds, or sofas, of floor rugs, or most anything…

I was reading that there are actually some events penned in for the Gold Coast too, plus a second athletes village so it must be a few events

I have actually just put a new sheet cover on the balcony mattress!

    See you in 2032 Mendip

I will be 63 by then so if I am going to compete I will need to start training in something achievable for a sexagenarian. I have long been thinking about getting an archery set to shoot at from the balcony.

If the odd bush turkey (protected under QLD law) cops a bolt in his gobbler then it was not my fault your honour!

The queensland state debt is projected to hit 130 billion dollars by 2025 and we are now going to saddle ourselves with a white elepant in 2032. As a Queenslander the phrase "Not happy Jan" comes to mind.

Leaked press release raises awkward questions for Brisbane Olympics bid

An American reporter asked the most incisive question after Brisbane’s big Olympics news, raising awkward issues about the whole movement.

Those rings will be all over Brisbane in 11 years.Source:Getty Images

At around 6.30pm AEST on Wednesday, Australia learned Brisbane will officially be hosting the 2032 Olympics.
It was a fait accompli after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) anointed the Queensland capital as its preferred bidder earlier in the year, leaving nobody in any doubt there was only going to be one outcome.

But a leaked press release from Tokyo Olympics organisers an hour before the final vote among IOC members left some questioning whether the final stages of the confirmation process were all for show.
The Brisbane delegation gave its final pitch – featuring presentations from Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Brisbane Lord Major Adrian Schrinner and Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates – an hour before the final vote, which landed 72 of 77 valid votes.
Whether the early press release from Tokyo congratulating Brisbane on winning hosting duties was a mistake from Japanese officials who anticipated Queensland’s victory, or symptomatic of something more deeply flawed with the IOC voting process, was up for debate.
An American reporter for the New York Times asked the most incisive question of a press conference held after the big announcement.
“Not to pour cold water on the celebrations, but just on the process — Mr Bach, we were here yesterday and you said this was not a done deal, this one candidate,” the reporter said.
“But two hours before the vote we got an embargoed press release from Tokyo 2020 congratulating Brisbane on winning this bid … it just gives the air that the IOC membership are kind of a gilded brothers band. What is the point of these people when it comes to a process like this?”
IOC President Thomas Bach said he knew nothing of the leaked press release and deflected any negative attention away from his organisation.
“I’m unaware of this but you cannot blame the IOC members there for a press release from the organising committee,” Bach said. “I don’t know what happened there, but it has nothing to do with normal procedure.
“You saw today a final presentation by Brisbane and again the questions and a secret vote. I think this speaks for itself and it has nothing to do with the action (by Tokyo organisers).”

Brisbane was never in doubt.Source:News Corp Australia

Palaszczuk has come under fire for flying to Tokyo during the pandemic when so many Australians are locked down and can’t even cross state lines to visit family members, let alone head overseas.
Given Brisbane was the only choice to host the 2032 Games, there were questions about whether the Premier needed to make the trip to Japan, or whether video calling from home would have sufficed.
Those questions gained even more significance in light of the leaked press release.
In a second press conference on Wednesday night, an Australian reporter asked: “You heard the question in the larger media conference room about the embargoed media release coming out from within the Olympic movement congratulating Brisbane an hour or so before the vote was placed. With that in mind, do you still believe it was necessary for you to come?”
Palaszczuk responded: “I’ll let John (Coates) talk about the delegation but can I say we had state, federal and council represented here and you saw our commitment to convincing the International Olympic Committee that we are ready to host the 2032 Olympics.”
Coates was firm in his belief Brisbane’s bid wouldn’t have succeeded had there been no in-person visit.
“The IOC president had no idea about it (the leaked press release), so that’s that,” Coates said.
“If Richard (Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck), Adrian and the Premier weren’t there, and little Johnny Coates had to go up there on his own, there wouldn’t have been 50 per cent of the votes.
“The IOC members want to see the true people who have done it.
“It was an actual necessity … she (Palaszczuk) had to be here.”

Schrinner added: “There’s some speculation you could have done this via Zoom or Skype. I’ve got to say, I wouldn’t put $8 billion worth of economic and social benefits for Queensland down to a Skype call. I wouldn’t put $17 billion worth of benefits for Australia down to a Skype call.
“There are some things that can only be done in person … this is something that had to be done in person.”

So I might have to keep an open mind for what category I will be taking aim at in 2032.

The new theme is a bit girly but there is no shame in exploring our feminine sides.
