Can someone explain something to me. After two teams of 11 guys play their hearts out for 90 minutes how can the result go to a "penalty shoot out"? What happened to an overtime period of any desired length? For the life of me I will never understand this.

Baseball, American football and basketball we play on till one team wins legitimately. I really would like to know why, and your feelings on losing in a shoot out.

^Got to agree that penalty shootouts don't seem fair. Might as well give the Goalkeeper a blindfold and cigar because all of a sudden the life of the entire team is on his shoulders.

Then 30 minutes of extra time.

There was a golden goal system introduced, in which a goal in extra time wins it immediately, but turned out to be a bit shit as both teams just defended with everyone behind the ball instead of attacking and trying to score, so that was ditched.
