    The 2020 Tokyo Olympics Thread

Somewhere to put stories of interest about the Olympic Games expected to be held in Tokyo.

Mo Farah has missed his last chance to qualify after missing the mark in a 10,000m race. It will be the first time he's been absent since 2004. Hasn't run that distance since switching to the Marathon, so I'm just surprised he didn't enter that instead.

A Ugandan Coach has tested positive for the Delta variant. It's the 2nd Ugandan positive test. A number of their Rugby Sevens team tested positive while in Monaco, and one of them actually legged it.

Uganda positive in Tokyo had Delta variant as rugby player missing in Monaco

A US middle distance runner who holds two US records has been banned after testing positive for Nandrolone. She blamed it on "eating a pork burrito from a food truck".

Meet Team USA : Welcome to the post-Phelps era. There are familiar names (like Ledecky and Biles), but plenty of new ones too (like Dressel and Richardson).

    • Track & Field: Sha'Carri Richardson is vying to become the first American woman to win the 100 meters since Gail Devers in 1996. In April, she ran the sixth-fastest women's 100 ever.
    • Swimming: The 50-member swim team features 11 teenagers, the most since 1996. Three Americans qualified in three or more individual events: Caeleb Dressel, Katie Ledecky and Michael Andrew.
    • Soccer: The women's roster (18 players, four alternates) will be revealed today. The men failed to qualify.
    • Men's basketball: The 12-man roster is nearly finalized. Here are the 11 players who've committed: Durant, Harden, Lillard, Booker, Tatum, Beal, Middleton, Adebayo, Green, Holiday, and Love.
    • Women's basketball: WNBA legends Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Sylvia Fowles (combined 11 gold medals) headline the 12-woman roster that features six newcomers.
    • Gymnastics: The U.S. Olympic trials begin tomorrow in St. Louis. Simone Biles is the star — who will be joining her?
    • Golf: Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau will represent the men. The women's team will be finalized next week.
    • Skateboarding: The first U.S. Olympic skateboarding team has 12 members, and they'll be competing in street and park disciplines. The most famous name is Nyjah Huston (4.6 million IG followers).

But Laurel Hubbard will compete for New Zealand. While I am generally for a tolerant outlook, that shit just ain't fair.

U.S. sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson reportedly fails drug test, could miss 100 meters at Tokyo Olympics 2020

American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson has reportedly failed a drug test that could result in the U.S. 100-meter champion missing that event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 21-year-old standout, who was expected to contend for a gold medal, tested positive for what is classified as a substance of abuse, according to the Jamaica Gleaner.

A positive test result would disqualify her U.S. Olympic Trials performance, and she could be suspended from competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Richardson did not use steroids and is facing a 30-day suspension for testing positive for marijuana, according to Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer

Though a 30-day suspension would force Richardson out of the 100 meters, it would end prior to the start of competition in the 4x100-meter relay, which she was expected to run. It is not yet known whether she would be qualified for that event.

Jenna Prandini, who finished fourth in the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials, would replace Richardson in the 100 meters if she is disqualified and/or suspended.

    Er... eh?

CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- Two 18-year-old female runners from Namibia won't be allowed to run in the 400 meters at the Tokyo Olympics after medical tests showed they have high natural testosterone levels.

That makes them ineligible under the same contentious rules that have sidelined South Africa's Caster Semenya.

The Namibian Olympic committee said Friday that the two runners, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi, had been withdrawn from the 400.

They will now "focus their full attention" on the 200 meters, Namibia's athletics federation said.

World Athletics' testosterone rules only apply to events between 400 meters and one mile.

Australian Olympic Committee finalises 472-member team for Tokyo Games

The Australian Olympic Committee has named the 472 athletes who will be competing at the Tokyo Games.

The team is made up of 218 men and 254 women — the greatest number of female athletes to compete for Australia.

The highest number of Indigenous athletes (16) has also been selected, with Ash Barty being the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athlete to compete in tennis, and Thomas Grice in shooting.

This year's team is the second-largest Australian Olympic contingent, 10 short of the 482 Australian athletes who went to the Athens Games in 2004.

Australia will compete in 33 sports, including all four new Olympic sports: karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

The track and field contingent is the largest ever assembled for an away games, with 63 athletes in total.

Equestrian stalwart Andrew Hoy extends his record for most Olympic appearances by an Australian, contesting his eighth Games. Fellow rider, Mary Hanna (66), will set a new record for Australia's oldest-ever competitor, competing in her sixth Olympic Games.

Australia's chef de mission Ian Chesterman congratulated all athletes selected for Tokyo and paid tribute to the ones who were not able to be in contention due to the COVID-19 postponement.

"This has been extremely difficult for every athlete, and each has their own individual story to tell. But they have made it. Through their determination and commitment, they are going to Tokyo," Chesterman said.

"Even before these Games are declared open on July 23, this Australian team has made its own history. They are a special team and Australians can be very proud of them.

"I would also like to pay tribute to those athletes for whom the postponement and global environment prevented them from being a part of this team. Whether that's through injury and retirement, lack of safe access to qualification events or through difficult personal circumstances, many have been forced to make that tough call.

"I can promise these athletes that this team carries their legacy and their contributions in their hearts all the way to Tokyo and into the heat of Olympic competition."

Full list of the Australian Olympic team.

Irish gymnast tests Olympics' 'anti-sex' beds

The Olympic Village’s beds are made of cardboard, and while it is sustainable for a person to sleep on, there has been speculation that the Olympics are trying to prevent athletes from having sex during their stay.

One Irish gymnast, Rhys McClenaghan decided to take to Twitter to test the durability of his “anti-sex” bed.

The cardboard beds are said to be “turned into recycled paper after the Games,” according to Tokyo 2020, The New York Post reported.

“We are promoting the use of recycled materials for procured items and construction materials at the Tokyo 2020 Games,” the Games’ official “Sustainability Pre-Games Report” said.

The rumored “anti-sex” beds stories came from Olympian Paul Chelimo, an American distance runner, who last week commented on Twitter, saying, “[the] beds to be installed in Tokyo Olympic Village will be made of cardboard, this is aimed at avoiding intimacy among athletes.”: Irish gymnast tests Olympics' 'anti-sex' beds | TheHill - https://twitter.com/McClenaghanRhys/...67768938291203

GBR Ladies are leading Chile 1-0.

    Chile are wearing Arsenal shirts.

On the hour Brazil ladies take on the chinkies.

They could probably beat the chinky mens team tbh.
