    Super Rugby Aotearoa and AU

Good one today featuring a South Island clash between the Highlanders and the inaugural Super Rugby Aotearoa champions Crusaders.

The Crusaders jumped out to a two converted try lead, but the Clan battled back to trail by one point. They may have gone into the sheds with a lead at halftime had they decided to take the penalty shots on offer. After kicking for the corner and lineouts the Crusader defense proved too strong and the Highlanders were unable to convert good territory into a try.

As has been the case since ages ago the Canterbury side showed their class in the second half and came away with a 26-13 victory.

Reds v Rebels coming up. The Reds look the goods this year along with the Brumbies.

    I haven't been keeping up.

What is the format for Super Rugby this year?

Super Rugby Aotearoa has each team play a home and away match. Same for Super Rugby AU. At the end of their domestic seasons the Kiwi and Aussie sides will play five more matches against each other. As far as who gets a trophy at the end, I dunno.

Chiefs up by 20-11 at the half. The Highlanders hanging in there after two first half yellow cards.

Not impressed with this ref Williams. Seems to blow the whistle a bit too much.

What a performance by Highlander Jona Nareki. His coast to coast run to narrow the gap in the first half was impressive enough. Then boom boom, two more in the second half. Nareki also set up Shannon Frizell's try with an outstanding line break. No doubt, Nareki gets MotM.

    Final, Chiefs 23 - 39 Highlanders.

I'm hesitant to renew my RP subscription.

They have entirely predictably turned to shite since Sky brought them out.

Brilliant business plan: 'our model isn't working so lets buy one that is... and then make it like ours'.

    I canceled mine, again.

First time was when they didn't get the World Cup rights.

Now they don't have the 6 Nations.

    Just a pile of shite.

Crusaders played well enough in the second half to stifle any hope of a Hurricane comeback to come out on top with a 17 point margin. Crusaders 33 - 16 Hurricanes.

One bit of concern is Richie Mo'unga was playing with what looked like a sore knee.

Game of the week has to be Sunday's Blues v Crusaders. When was the last time the Blues beat their South Island rivals? It was a long long time ago.

    Re: Blues v Crusaders

    Tight five - Crusaders (just)
Back row - Blues even without Papali'i
Half back and fly half - Crusaders
    Centres - evens
Backfield - Crusaders slightly ahead, just slightly.

    C'mon the Crusaders!

Blues winning possession, but Crusader scoring when they have the ball.

    Go the Crusaders!

Mitchell Hunt was outstanding for the Highlanders.

As a Crusaders supporter I can't say I'm pleased with the result, but there it is. The Highlanders really played well, and the Crusaders were beaten soundly.

Well, damn Chiefs. Damien MacKenzie slots a golden point in extra time to give the Chiefs the win over the Highlanders 26-23.

Every year Chiefs are my bogey team in Superbru picks.

Japanese import Kazuki Himeno put in an outstanding performance for the Highlanders as they beat the Blues.
