    Rugby League 2021

Fans get their first taste of new rules

With the start of the new season, the All Stars game has given fans a chance to assess some of the new rules for this season.
The six-again rule, which was introduced last year for ruck infringements, is also being used when defenders do not retreat 10 metres and are offside.

There are now fewer scrums with a play-the-ball restarting play after the ball has gone into touch.
The team with the ball is allowed to choose whether they take the play-the-ball 10 or 20 metres from the sideline, or in the middle of the field.
There is also a change to incorrect play-the-balls.

What was once a penalty to the offending side, has turned into a simple change of possession.
This happened in the second quarter of the men's game when Blake Ferguson was deemed to have not played the ball correctly.
The Māori All Stars were awarded a play-the-ball.

Something the fans did not get to see — despite the draw — was a long-range field goal attempted.
Two points will be awarded if a side can hit the field goal from beyond 40 metres.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

Scrums were only there so the players could catch their breaths, they'll need to be even fitter now to get through each half as stoppages - even just for 40 or 50 seconds - become rarer. Good!

Just finished watching a replay of the Indigenous v Maori game, didn't know the score and couldn't believe what a quality game it was considering it was the players first real game of footy in about 4 months and in wet conditions. But 10-10 at full time with no golden point extra time? WTF!

^ Yep, I thought it was a ripper of a game also.

They really ripped into each other, without being illegal, except for the shoulder charge.

I remain a Benji Marshall fan.

South Sydney defeats St George Illawarra 48-16 in Charity Shield

    Rugby League 2021-12272032-3x2-xlarge-jpg
Cody Walker was in superb touch for the Rabbitohs in Mudgee

Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell have helped South Sydney stretch its Charity Shield dominance over St George Illawarra to nine years with a sizzling 48-16 win in Mudgee on Saturday night.

    Key points:

    • Walker scored three tries in the first half against the Dragons
    • Joseph Suaalii crossed for two tries in a lower-grade trial match for North Sydney
    • Harry Grant sustained a knee injury in the Storm's trial against the Knights

The Rabbitohs were almost untouchable in the first half as they raced to a 32-4 lead, with Walker scoring a hat-trick of tries in an eight-minute period.

Mitchell, backing up from last week's All Stars match, was equally as impressive in the first half against the Dragons, setting up South Sydney's first two tries and then scoring one of his own just before half-time.

^Watched it. Dragons fans are in for a painful year (again) if that was anything to go by, they were diabolical. Expect Hunt to lose the captaincy and be a bench-player again by about round 6, he was completely useless as usual while acting as a turnstile in defence and throwing bad passes before going into hiding.

Rabbits looked very sharp, I'm sure Bennett changed his interchange plans at half time with such a lead against a shit opposition and send most of his big-guns for well deserved early shower.

If you're interested in the Teams this season and your teams chances, this is a decent read.

I'll show the Broncos ... not because of a bias, but alphabetically they are first ...

With so many changes across the game over the off-season, we’ve detailed below how each side is likely to line up in round 1, and analysed how they will fare compared to their 2020 campaign.

    BRISBANE BRONCOS

    • Jamayne Isaako
    • Corey Oates
    • Tesi Niu
    • Herbie Farnworth
    • Xavier Coates
    • Brodie Croft
    • Tom Dearden
    • Tom Flegler
    • Jake Turpin
    • Matt Lodge
    • Jordan Riki
    • Alex Glenn
    • Patrick Carrigan
    • Cory Paix
    • John Asiata
    • Tevita Pangai Jr
    • Ethan Bullemor

    Gains:
Dale Copley, John Asiata, Andrew McCullough, David Mead

Losses: David Fifita, Darius Boyd, Matt Gillett, Jack Bird, Sean O'Sullivan, Joe Ofahengaue

    Analysis:

Brisbane will have their work cut out for them this year - especially after losing rep forwards in Fifita and Ofahengaue.
On top of that, Payne Haas (suspension) will miss the opening three games and they will also be without Kotoni Staggs (ACL) for the first half of the season .

Anthony Milford (hand) looks set to miss the start of the season, with Brodie Croft the logical replacement in the halves.

Tom Flegler (shoulder) injured his shoulder in the trial against the Cowboys, but may still be fit for round 1.

Jordan Riki is tipped to gain the edge spot left by Fifita, while Tesi Niu has been training at centre.

Jamayne Isaako is likely to gain first crack at fullback following Darius Boyd's retirement.

    NRL 2021 rule changes explained

Higher-intensity, free-flowing rugby league is what fans can expect when the 2021 NRL season gets underway this week with eight new rule changes in action.

A faster-paced game with minimal stoppages is sure to bring a more exciting spectacle for fans, however there has been some criticism that with that comes fatigue.

But for the most part, players, staff and fans are counting down the days until kick-off.

Here are the new rule changes:

    Two-point field goal

... two points for a field goal kicked outside the 40-metre line.

    Six-again

... players will no longer be penalised for 10-metre infringements but rather the referee will rule six-again.

    Scrums

... to ensure neither side is at a disadvantage, players will wait for the referee to call "break" once they deem the ball is out of the scrum.
Only once that call has been made are players permitted to disengage.

    Play-the-ball restart

... when the ball is kicked or carried into touch instead of a scrum, play will be resumed with a play-the-ball.

    Bunker reviews

... if the on-field referee believes a try is scored, he or she can instantly award it while the bunker reviews the decision in the background.

    Injuries

... if a trainer requests that the referee stop the game for an injury timeout, the player that has gone down with the injury must either be interchanged or taken off the field for a period of two minutes while the ball remains in play.
Once that two minutes of play has expired, the player may then return to the field.

    Incorrect play-the-ball

... players must have a genuine attempt to play the ball correctly with their foot, otherwise the referee will rule a handover.

    Captain's challenge

... when a captain's challenge is inconclusive, the on-field decision will stand but the team will not be docked for an unsuccessful attempt.

Good article on the NRL's first week ...

    ---

NRL round one shows off latest rule changes and new-look teams

It can be tempting to get over-excited after the first week of any season, but as the viewers of WandaVision will tell you, it's important to temper those expectations so you don't accidentally set yourself up for disappointment.

    Lots
    of
Analysis ... see the article for detail

Probably the biggest winner of round one was the new bunker rule, which only sends on-field 'no try' decisions directly to the video referee, while tries are awarded on the field with the bunker checking behind the scenes if there's anything wrong.

Didn't see any real surprises in the round 1, was maybe a bit shocked at how under prepared the Cows and Titans looked. There's the top 5 teams (Storm, Chooks, Panthers, Eels, Raiders) then daylight between them and the rest of the sides.

I watched all the games over the week-end (which is very rare for me).

From your list HW, the Panthers and Eels may not be top 5 at the end of the season and the Bunnies in my Top 5.

Should the Panthers lose either Cleary or Laui would be difficult to replace.

The Eel's Hooker, Reed Mahoney was outstanding and his lose would be damaging.

Watching the Sharks and StGeorge was like watching a good park Footy game ... both teams will struggle playing against the Pros.

I thought the result of the Panthers/Cows game didn't reflect the flow of the game. Cows will win 5+ games (hopefully 8+ games) As will the Warriors

Bunnies will be top 8 ... sure. Top 6 a good chance with a sniff of the top 4.

    IMHO

^Bunnies are a chance to do ok, but their habit of falling in a heap come finals time when sudden-death games begin is a worry. Would never bet on who may or may not be in the finals at any time though, in a game where it's so easy to lose players for the season thru injury. The winner this year will likely be whichever team mentioned above that has the least amount of injuries at the end of the year.

They went to super league. Arguably without the club defecting super league may have died before birth. A greater treachery is hard to find in Australian rugby league history and Peter Moore trashed his legacy. I know other clubs also went across but the impact was nowhere near that of Canterbury. Never forget, never forgive.

The most concerning thing from the weekend's matches, from a State of Origin point of view, was that all the Queensland teams got done (except for the South Qld. Storm).

Rugby League Commission has approved the addition of an 18th player

The NRL has been under increasing pressure to follow the AFL's example in introducing a concussion substitute.

    Key points:

    • NRL teams can field an 18th player after three players from a team fail HIA tests
    • The 18th player must be an emerging player
    • The new rule will commence from round five after the ARLC has consulted the RLPA, clubs and coaches

The discussion was top of the Australian Rugby League Commission's meeting today, where it gave in principle approval for clubs to use an 18th player.

The need for the 18th substitute was glaringly obvious last Saturday night when Cronulla's bench was ravaged and the side was reduced to 13 men before half-time in their 28-4 loss to the Eels.

^They were going down like cold beers in a bushfire last weekend. It's by far the most brutal team sport that exists but there was something like 13 players who couldn't get off the field unassisted due to their injuries and another 10 or so that needed to have Doctors decide if they could keep playing due to head knocks and concussions (hence this new extra player rule being rushed in).

I'm not seeing how this new rule will do anything to change how many people get hurt playing the game, and think if they want to keep playing at the speed and ferocity we're seeing these days they're going to have to look at a 6 man bench and 10 interchanges during play.

What I have noted lately is the attacking play has not changed much but the defensive game has changed dramatically.

You have guys at 110 kg, fit as fuck hitting other opposition players with the ball in a defensive pattern I've never seen before.

No wonder there are so many injuries particularly concussion and what the defensive side is doing is totally legal.

Vail Tommy Raudonikis. The heart and soul of the Western Suburbs Magpies when I first started to follow them in 1977. One of only a few players that left Wests that I could forgive.
