    The Prada Cup (Americas Cup)

The Brits are into the Prada Cup final and the American yacht is looking like getting knocked out of it. Twice it thudded into the water today, and a couple of weeks ago they capsized it. Hilariously they named it "American Magic".

This decides who contests the America's Cup in March but it will likely be the unbeaten British yacht Britannia in a rematch against Italy's Luna Rossa.

It's impressive watching these beasts hurtling across the sea at up to 50Kts.

The racing is on Sky Sports at around 9:15am Thailand time. The overgrown US hobie cat is expected to lose by a distance.

I can only assume that the Americans get a second chance to redeem themselves in the big event.

Added: The Final (First to Four wins) should be good. The lead changed nine times in the last race, so the teams are well matched.

    The capsize was spectacular.

The capsizing was on every news channel non-stop . . . so sink already . . . very few would give a flying one ...

Thanks for this. I always enjoy the top end of yacht racing, despite my experience at the other end of the scale. These latest F1 boats are really something else,, when I think back to to my own racing days in the English Channel and in the Baltic, we were happy to break 7 knots in an old wooden boat.
Cheers PH, and thanks NZ for great hosting.
The hesitancy of the US boat in the circumstances is understandable. I hope they can make a fist of it for some closer racing in the next 2 legs.

Well the US were pulverised, I think they faked a technical problem in the last race to save face.

First time I've paid attention to The America's Cup since age 4 and Australia II.

Bit sad to see 2 things.

One, it's called the fokin' Prada Cup.

Two, they've done away with yachts and replaced them with giant flying kites that have two little wings that occasionally touch the sea.

The only reason I wanted the US to win is that they would have gone back to mono-hull boats for the next cup

I made that mistake but in fact it's the qualifier.

The winner of Britain-Italy takes on Emirates NZ in the Americas Cup.

The Prada Cup finals start on Feb 13th, the Americas Cup is in March.

Maybe I'm missing something but did you see a catamaran on the course today?

Again: The Prada Cup is the qualifying tournament. The winner competes in The Americas Cup.

One is in February, the other in March.

    I hope that clarifies things.

Yes, that's why I said that I hope he's less clued in than us (you).

I sent a message claiming the America's Cup is now called the Prada Cup, thanks to you.

Nope, of course not, you're quite right. I got my terminology wrong . . . I read an article in the NZ Herald outlining the format the next Cup would have if the US were to win . . . and it was quite clear that the winglets (my word-invention) wouldn't be an option

I've only just realised the final started on Saturday, and Luna Rossa is handing Britannia its arse on a nautical plate.

4-0 up and it's first to seven. There was one reasonably close race but the others have been emphatic.

Hard to see the Brits avoiding the iceberg.

Shut up snubby, you never even made the final of this, let alone your own trophy.

The Americas Cup will be between NZ and Italy.

It did look like the Brits messed up their chances right at the start while jockeying for the starting gun.
Luna Rossa simply outsailed the Brits whose supposed speciality for higher winds didn't come true.

I am surprised you even made a thread about the Cup since you wankers have not won it since 1851.

The US on the other hand has 30 Cup victories far more than any other nation.

    OhOh is painfully ignorant

With Auckland in Level 3 (out of max 4) if there are no more races then Luna Rossa will go through to the America's Cup final against Team New Zealand with a 4-0 record.

Basically the last day of racing allowed is next Wednesday. Doesn't look good for Team UK
