I wonder if the teams will be able to use backup cars if they wreck in the "sprint" race.
They are doing this as a trial run. Im not sure that it will work. The first lap of a sprint race is going to be a bigger dog eat dog clusterfuck than the main event.
It will probably entertain though. There will lots of track incidents and flaring tempers. Just watch
The Australian Grand Prix has been cancelled for the second year in a row.
The event at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne had been rescheduled from March 14th to November 21st in an effort to ensure it could go ahead safely amid the Covid-19 pandemic. However the government of the Victoria region confirmed its cancellation on Tuesday.
They seem to have taken the Thai approach to Vaccine Management.
I mean cancelling something scheduled for November doesn't show a whole fucking lot of optimism does it?!
Mind you, most of their infections have leaked out of (supposed) quarantine, so they seem to be pretty fucking inept.
These things seem to go in cycles. UK got off to a bad start and now they are doing ok, except for the alarming spread of new variants
At least Aus has not wasted money procuring low quality vaccines
I doubt Aus has even spoken to the Chinese pharma companies.
F1 put together a library of race highlights going way back. All in the same format.
Here's the British GP from 2003. Switch actually makes the highlight reel. He's on the track at 00:55 (edit. christ. i guess these are blocked on td bc presumably the td server is in Britain ?

Is everybody ready for the new format F1 being trialled at Silverstone?
Qualifying is Friday at 1800 BST.
Then Sprint Qualifying is on Saturday at 1630 BST.

It's a paradox, isn't it.
All USA motorsport is about as watchable as World Series Crochet.
The data shows that only the diehard fans watch and pay attention to practice and qualifying. The sprint race is intended to get the attention of the casual fans through the weekend and not just the one race
|The struggles of Daniel Riccardo at Mclaren are well known. He's not qualifying as good as Lando Norris. This video shows where Norris is beating Riccardo.

Sir Lewis reckons the sprint will not be too exciting, just a DRS train. We shall see. Or maybe not, it is a bit late for me, Thailand time. And there is zero chance of me staying up until midnight tonight to watch the qualifying. Well done Liberty Media, the first Silverstone I have missed in a while.
Didn't realise there are driver and constructors points in the sprint race.
F1 Sprint is essentially a mini race over 100km, which at Silverstone works out to be 17 laps.
The race is expected to last around 30 minutes and is designed to be a short and sharp race for the line, without planned tyre changes or pit-stop strategies.
The 20 drivers will qualify for the sprint via the usual “knock-out” method, which has been moved back to Friday evening, with the finishing order of Saturday’s sprint determining the starting grid for Sunday’s main race.
There are also points up for grabs: three for first, two for second and one for third, which will of course count towards both the drivers and constructors standings.
When does it take place?
The F1 Sprint will start at 4:30pm BST on Saturday, while qualifying for the sprint will take place at 6pm on Friday evening.
That session will operate as usual, with the exception that the driver with the fastest time in Q3 will not win pole-position for Sunday’s race.
The winner of Saturday’s sprint will be the official pole-position holder.
What happens to Sunday’s race?
The British Grand Prix will run as usual with no changes to Sunday’s race. It will still take place over 52 laps, with a full 25 points for the winner of the race and so on.
