    State of Origin 2020

Adelaide Oval will reportedly host the first match of the 2020 State of Origin series, which will take place over three consecutive weeks in November.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s State of Origin was pushed back to after the NRL Grand Finals instead of its traditional mid-season slot.
Speaking on Fox League’s NRL 360, rugby league reporter James Hooper revealed the venues and dates for this year’s Origin series. Having never hosted an Origin fixture before, Game 1 will take place at the 53,000-capacity Adelaide Oval.
“The first ever State of Origin game at Adelaide Oval, and that will be November 4,” Hooper said on Monday evening.
“November 11 we will come to Sydney and that will be at ANZ Stadium, and then November 18 up to the Sunshine State at Suncorp Stadium.”
OH SURE let’s have the first Origin in Adelaide so the #NRL fans who couldn’t manage to get tickets to a game this season have one less chance to see a live game this year. WTF?
    — Chloe-Amanda Bailey (@ChloeAmandaB) September 14, 2020

The official announcement will be made on Tuesday, according to Hooper.

New South Wales are the defending champions, having won State of Origin titles in 2018 and 2019. The Blues have not won three consecutive series since 2005.
Queensland have won 21 of the 38 completed Origin series played since 1982, while New South Wales have managed 15, with two draws.

Despite being riddled with injury throughout the 2020 season, Blues fullback Tom Trbojevic could still feature in November’s Origin series, according to New South Wales coach Brad Fittler.
“He’s a very good player Tom, he is one of the best in the game, so if he is fit and healthy, he gets a start,” Fittler said on Channel 9’s Sunday Footy Show.
“We have a 27-man squad, so a lot will be determined over the next six weeks as well.
“See how he goes over the next two games.
“Given the doctor situation, we’ll have a good idea of how Tom is.
“We lean on a lot of the clubs and ask about their players and where they’re at at the moment.
“The strain and the stresses coming from the protocols and how that’s affecting them, that would bring injuries itself, not having the freedoms you’re normally used to.”
After more than two months on the sidelines, Trbojevic is expected to make his NRL return when the Manly Sea Eagles host the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday afternoon.

I saw the hypothetical line-ups of both teams a few week back, assuming the teams were being picked then obviously. NSW were better in almost every position and had those 2 teams ran out, QLD would have lost by 24+

When I talk to my Boys about Footy, who will win each game ... we talk about hearts and heads.

In your heart, which team do you want to win, in your head, which team will win.

I my heart, it will always be Queensland.

As for my head ... I'll wait to see the Teams named after the GF.

Th only way the Cane Toads can win this series is if they can lure Cam Smith out of retirement.

    State of Origin 2020-12666678-16x9-xlarge-jpg

The NRL has finalised the venues for this year's State of Origin series, with Adelaide Oval to host game one on Wednesday, November 4.

    Key points:

    • Adelaide Oval, Sydney's Olympic stadium and Brisbane's Lang Park will be the venues for the 2020 State of Origin series
    • The Women's State of Origin match will be played on the Sunshine Coast for the first time on November 13
    • Details about the bubble conditions for State of Origin are yet to be finalised between the RLPA, NRL and state leagues

It will be the first time Adelaide will host a match in the rugby league state of series, which has been delayed from June to November because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I'm glad Adelaide have scored a test in what has to be the worlds finest rugby league series, but as an Adelaide boy who lived in Sydney for many years I have to tell ya- next to no interest in, or knowledge of, league here. Aussie rules turf, through and through. I hope they can get enough bums on seats!

Cant see anything other than a blues 3-0 win.
Just look at how Broncos, Titans and the Cows have done this year.

Except for David Fafita, the only decent players in the Broncos all year would wear Blue if they get picked.

Kalyn Ponga’s shoulder injury leaves Queensland Maroons in disarray

Queensland’s State of Origin campaign has taken a massive blow, with the announcement superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga requires shoulder surgery.
The Sydney Morning Herald’s Michael Chammas revealed Ponga had suffered a labral tear in his shoulder, which hampered his performance throughout the NRL premiership.
The 22-year-old will need off-season surgery, potentially meaning he will miss November’s historic Origin series.
The Australian’s Brent Read told NRL Tonight the Maroons would be informed of Ponga’s availability on Tuesday, the same day Queensland will name the first members of their 27-man squad.

“I reckon we’ll have a decision tomorrow as to whether he’s available for Origin. He’s seeing the physio tomorrow,” Read said on Monday.

As explained by The Daily Telegraph’s Paul Kent on Fox League’s NRL 360, the Newcastle Knights would be eager for Ponga to undertake surgery as soon as possible, ensuring he recovers before the 2021 premiership kicks off in March.
“Certainly they’re going to be pushing him (to have surgery) sooner rather than later, and I think (Queensland Maroons coach Wayne Bennett) will get on the phone and convince him to get it after Origin,” Kent said on Monday evening.
“There was talk he was going to pull out of Origin anyway. Along with the shoulder, which is clearly a problem, life in the bubble has worn him down as well, and I think everything just piled on, and he was long odds to play Origin anyway.”
Queensland’s backline has already lost several high-profile players through injury, including Michael Morgan, Moses Mbye and potential debutant Kyle Feldt.

Kalyn Ponga has played three State of Origin matches.Source:AAP

The Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfield argued Gold Coast Titans star AJ Brimson is a better option for the Maroons.
“You saw enough of AJ Brimson at the back-end of the year to know he’ll handle Origin, seriously,” Rothfield said on NRL 360.
“If you wouldn’t want him fully fit, compared to Ponga who’s carrying a shoulder injury, there’s no betting.
“You can’t carry players into that level of football and that intensity needing shoulder surgery.
“He hasn’t played anywhere near a million dollar footballer’s pay packet, and this (injury) is probably the reason why.
“He hasn’t been going awful, but he hasn’t been playing like the Kalyn Ponga we know.”

Queensland legend Billy Slater also backed Brimson to wear the No. 1 jersey next month.
“Huge news for Kalyn Ponga and also the Queenslanders. He’s a big part of that Queensland team.,” Slater told WWOS Radio.
“I’m not sure what to make of that, but it will be very disappointing if Kalyn Ponga is not available for Origin this year.
“AJ Brimson has been playing outstanding football so he would certainly come into contention for that position, but it would be great to have Kalyn Ponga out there.”
Newcastle were eliminated from the NRL premiership after Sunday afternoon’s 46-20 loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium.
The 2020 State of Origin series kicks off with game one at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday, November 4.

Mal Meninga joins Wayne Bennett's Queensland State of Origin coaching staff to face N

    State of Origin 2020-9089860-16x9-xlarge-jpg

Queensland's underdog State of Origin outfit will be powered by a coaching dream team, with Mal Meninga joining Wayne Bennett's staff for next month's series.

    Key points:

    • Meninga was given permission by the Australian Rugby League Commission to join the Maroons coaching staff
    • He and Wayne Bennett have won 14 State of Origins series between them as coaches
    • The State of Origin series kicks off on November 4

Australia coach Meninga was pipped for the Maroons job by Bennett when Kevin Walters was forced to relinquish the role after being appointed Brisbane Broncos coach.

But Meninga's follow-up offer of support to work as an assistant coach has been accepted by Bennett, and the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) on Thursday conceded there were "exceptional circumstances" in approving the move.

With no Tests scheduled for this year, Meninga will temporarily step down from his national duties and forgo his Kangaroos salary to join Bennett, who he first worked with at Brisbane's police academy more than 40 years ago.

Meninga was coached by Bennett at the Maroons, Canberra Raiders and Brisbane club Souths during his decorated playing career.

The pair boast 14 State of Origin series wins between them as Queensland coach, while the experienced Neil Henry — a key strategist behind some of Meninga's nine series wins — has replaced Justin Hodges on Bennett's staff.

"From my perspective, it's great to be involved and to work under Wayne and the current batch of players is something that I'm really excited about," Meninga said in a statement.

Why doesn't Boyd Cordner, with his long history of concussions, wear a head guard?

That was a fairly innocuous head knock and he's off for the night, and probably the Origin Series.

Even though he's a blue, I have great respect for him.

    HALF-TIME: NSW leads 10-0

That was not the greatest half of football I've seen. A lot of attempts at enterprising football, but not a whole lot of it well executed.

Queensland looks utterly overmatched, and the Blues haven't even played their best.

NSW seems to be able to get whatever it wants down the right side when they have time to set up a play from decent field position. That's being set up by dominance through the middle from Daniel Saifiti, Junior Paulo, Damien Cook, Jake Trbojevic and James Tedesco, who are cutting them to ribbons or barrelling over them.

On the other side of the ball, save for one piece of individual magic from Dane Gagai that almost created something, the Maroons have looked listless with the ball in hand. Passes are going everywhere but to hand, last-tackle plays are being shut down, and the Blues defenders seem draped all over them at every turn.
