NZ Super Rugby to welcome crowds back immediately - coronavirus restrictions over

NZ Super Rugby to welcome crowds back immediately - coronavirus restrictions over-12333276-3x2-xlarge-jpg

New Zealand's Super Rugby competition will kick off its opening round in front of crowds this weekend, generating further hype about the sport's return.

    Key points:
    • The domestic competition has been set up as a temporary replacement for Super Rugby
    • The Vietnamese football competition is the only other league to welcome back crowds so far
    • Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has previously said the government would work with stadiums to create a "COVID code"

The NZ government announced its nationwide alert system would relax to "level one" at midnight on Monday, allowing mass gatherings to take place.

With no restrictions on crowd size, there is the possibility of sold-out grandstands when the Highlanders host the Chiefs in Dunedin on Saturday and the Blues face the Hurricanes at Eden Park on Sunday in the first round of Super Rugby Aotearoa matches.

The competition has been set up as a temporary replacement for the international Super Rugby tournament, which is suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Super Rugby Aotearoa set for sell-out return in New Zealand amidst rule changes

NZ Super Rugby to welcome crowds back immediately - coronavirus restrictions over-12352460-3x2-xlarge-jpg

Super Rugby is set to make its return in front of a sell-out crowd this weekend in New Zealand as officials introduce rule changes to the sport.

    Key points:
    • The Super Rugby Aotearoa match between the Blues and Hurricanes has sold out, with more than 42,000 fans expected at Eden Park
    • Fans are allowed in New Zealand after mass gatherings were given the go-ahead on Monday
    • Domestic Super Rugby competitions in Australia and New Zealand will experiment with rule changes

The Blues announced on Saturday that its match on Sunday against the Hurricanes at Auckland's Eden Park had sold out.

With 42,000 tickets sold, it will be the biggest Super Rugby crowd in Auckland since the same two sides met in 2005.

Saturday's match between the Highlanders and the Chiefs at the 22,800-capacity Forsyth Barr stadium in Dunedin is also expected to come close to a sell-out, with 20,000 tickets sold as of Saturday morning ahead of a 7:05pm local time kick off.

Stoked to see Super Rugby back. The comp should be entertaining with Blues, Chiefs, Canes, and Crusaders all looking formidable and the Highlanders capable of knocking off any team on any given weekend.

    Go the mighty Crusaders!

....and I do hope that they remain cautious with safety protocols in mind.

After the incredible effort the Kiwis did in containing and whatnot.
Yet, remembering that it's still out there - active and mutated as ever.

All that in place - go for it.
NZ and rugby are like blood kin.

I did notice the lack of face masks in the crowd. If it were me I would have been masked up.

Wearing a mask has become second nature now as being without one in public could mean a 1,000﷼ (USD$268) fine.

Reds v Tahs game was alright. Tahs fought back and took the lead, but the Reds came back and snatched in the end. Gotta say Phil Kearns grinds some listeners, but I'm ok with him commenting on the game.

The Reds haven't won that clash for ages, so nice to see a change to the norm.

I've adopted a NZ Rugby Team.

Why ... because their (old) Jersey is similar to the Club I used to play League for.

My Mob will be the Christchurch Crusaders

Here's a question for you Rugby aficionados ... are there any Aussies/UK/SA/other players currently playing in your current comp?

I do not rate D Mac... just feels like he’s seconds away from a massive cock up every time he touches the ball

A sprinkling in the Kiwi teams... Hurricanes winger is from SA and Marchant (sp?) for the Blues is a capped England player
