    State of Origin 2020

Origin on collision course with T20 World Cup as NRL release dates for end-of-year series

The NRL is on a collision course with the Twenty20 World Cup with the second State of Origin set to clash with Australia’s possible semi-final at the SCG.

All three Origins will reportedly be played in the space of 14 days this year after the season, on November 4, 11 and 18.

It’s expected the men’s T20 World Cup will be cancelled or postponed, amid concerns over the ability of 15 teams to travel to Australia and whether crowds can attend.

But after Channel Nine aired concerns over clashes with the World Cup last month, a clash appears certain if the tournament does go ahead. The top-ranked Australians are guaranteed to play in the November 11 semi-final if they progress out of their group, due to a deal that sees their final-four game slated for the SCG.

Nine has the exclusive free-to-air rights to the World Cup semi-finals, and would therefore be set to show the match.
They also have the rights to State of Origin, meaning they would be forced to split their viewers between two of their channels.

Technically, anti-siphoning laws means both events should be on Nine’s main channel, as sports on the list can’t premiere on a digital multichannel. Both State of Origin and Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup matches on home soil are on that list.

That has however not been followed in the past, with Nine showing last year’s Ashes on Gem.

Cricket Australia and tournament organisers are still hopeful the World Cup can be played as planned, with the event set to be a massive financial windfall for the cash-strapped sport.

However, there are concerns over whether Indian officials will want the tournament to proceed, given the Indian Premier League could be pushed into that slot.

History shows the State of Origin series is extremely popular and watched by millions globally Hal.

I can take or leave Soccer but never miss the State of Origin games.

Having said that I fear 2020 is pretty well stuffed for sporting events with 2021 still in question.

To be honest, LT, league is a minority sport in the UK and I had to pretend to play it at school because I come from the north where it's relatively popular (I've even been to watch Salford a few times).

It may well be watched by millions globally; however, so is bowling, and in the UK rugby union and cricket are the second sports.

Give me any rugby to watch (if I have to) and it's Union. It seems faster and I even got up for the WC final to see us get battered by South Africa.

I'm a New South Welshman and at school we played Union, on the weekends we played League and in the summer cricket.

Football, or as I call it soccer, in those days was played by Italians mainly and is still today a lowly ranked sport in Australia.

Aussie sport these days is a shame as most kids spend their weekends at home on the internet and not out kicking a football about.

I can see that because it's what Europe has always played. Nowadays it's what the world plays and nobody really cares what the Aussies or Kiwis do, to be honest.

For me football most of the year and cricket in the summer.

Not a great fan of it myself, but it did give me cheap beer as a member of the Eastern Suburbs Leagues Club when it was till in Bondi Junction.

But yes, at school it was union and cricket. At Uni it was union and cricket . . . most Sydney-siders, however, were league fans - if at all. Union only took off after professionalisation of the code.

The State of Origin Series is different, however, as it pits one state against an inferior one (Queensland) and feelings run very high. In NSW you also have a Country versus City match, which is more fun to watch (Basically Sydney vs the rest of the state)

    Lancashire has a football team?

I grew up playing ice/street hockey and baseball in the US, football in Germany and rugby and cricket in Aus. It's all good fun until you do a sliding tackle in minus seven degrees and you rip your thigh open on ice sheets covered by snow.

Probably why I took up kayaking at school in Sydney

    Cricket.

Football was my first love, but I wasn't good enough.

Cricket was my 2nd love, but by that time I'd fallen in love with fishing when I got the call to see if I could have cut the mustard at Middleton CC (a feeder club for Lancy).

I was only 13 at the time, but I was never good enough for either.

Here's a question, how can something like fishing (which I obviously don't do, hence my question) replace a school and team sport like football or cricket?

It was also about the time I turned into a fat little porker, so all that sitting down went hand in hand with fizzy drinks, crisps and chocolate!
