    Rugby League 2020 - REBOOTED

NRL says it has government approval for May 28 restart of coronavirus-hit competition

    Rugby League 2020 - REBOOTED-11863910-3x2-700x467-jpg

NRL clubs will be able to resume training from May 4 as the competition charges towards its planned May 28 restart.

    Key points:
    • The league says it has the green light from government to resume competition on May 28
    • The structure of the competition has yet to be finalised but points earned at the start of the year will carry over
    • The league is still working out how to get the Warriors over from New Zealand

Australian Rugby League Commissioner Wayne Pearce confirmed in a statement that teams would have a three-week pre-season before the competition resumed, ahead of a meeting with clubs on Wednesday.

"We reaffirmed that May 28 is the starting date for the competition, we also confirmed that teams will be able to train from May 4," Pearce said.
He said the league had been given the green light from government to restart.

I wonder how fit they've been keeping and how non playing will effect them injury wise.

Looks like each and every hurdle in front of the season reboot has been cleared now with the Warriors being given the green light to fly to Oz. The one remaining step is for the NRL boss to address everyone who's going to be directly involved at any level from each club on Monday (via live video of course) where I'd hope he'll be telling them that anyone who fucks this up will never have anything to do with the game on a professional level again. No warnings no fines no excuses no nothing, doesn't matter if you're a trainee physio or Cam Smith or Wayne Bennett, break the rules and you're gonski for life.

The entire sporting world will be following this closely to see if they can also get their games back into play using a similar model, ok there'll still be no live attendence for a while yet but at least the media money that drives professional sports will start rolling in again and people will be able to watch their favourite games on tv. This is a big chance for the NRL to be an unlikely world leader in getting the show on the road again, and gain a heap of new fans worldwide who might like seeing the ultimate team contact sport for the first time. I really REALLY hope they don't fuck it up

I really hope they don't as well.

A really good opportunity if they can set a great trouble-free standard.

It will probably depend on who owns the international broadcasting rights, and whether they are in a position to on sell or license those rights to one of the large international sports broadcasters.

A problem that I see is the behaviour of the players.

All the players have been told to obey the virus protocols, yet just so far, at least 3 of the big names in NRL have been caught screwing up already, by posting photos and videos of themselves breaking the rules.

(Latrell Mitchel, Josh Ado Carr camping together with a bunch of their mates. And Nathan Cleary dancing with 3 women in a video)

How many others are breaking the rules without broadcasting the facts.

That's an easy one to answer, it's Murdoch. Thru Fox sports or Sky sports and their subsidiaries, he can put the game into an uncountable number of lounge rooms worldwide.

Next Thursday cannot come quick enough, on Fox NRL they've been doing live calls from the studio of replays from the 80's and 90's and I've been watching them

No chance to turn an honest dollar for the first few weeks till seeing who's been on the couch and who's been in their home gym during the lockdown. Maybe just a cheeky exotic or multi though

^ I reckon The Storm will come out swinging. Should be a ripper of a game.

StGeorge take on the Worriers (pun intended) and StGeorge were all a bluster in a radio interview I heard.
Lost in rounds one and two ... have to 'reboot' their season and all that.
    Warriors have several injury concerns.

HW ... BTW, it's been that long since I've had a bet, I had to think hard for the name of the Agency I use!

^ Some good match ups next week but being a Bronco's fan, it's the Thursday night Parra match I really want to see. They lit Brisbane up 58-0 last time they played, without going to Googen I'd say that's the worst defeat in their history. Can remember the game well

I read somewhere that when football comes back to the UK, the players have been told to turn their heads when they go in for tackles/fall over.

The way they've Americanised the rules, just bet on the team with the tallest and fastest wingers, like Daniel Tupou. Add a team with a great kicker to that mix and you should rake it in...

^^Jamie Soward a legend? He's a future Immortal with Golden Boot awards? Yeah ok, Heskey was a legend of soccer too then and only injuries stopped him picking up multiple Ballon d'Or's

I don't read anything shit players like Soward have to say while trying to sound intelligent to a readership who never saw him play, and have no idea what he's on about with rules being Americanised, but kicking to a winger has always been part of the game and the only way to get thru a rock-solid defence at times. Tupou might be tall (his nickname is The Giraffe) but I could name ten wingers far better than him and his butter-fingers getting to a high ball first then getting it on the ground, starting with guys like Vanivulu, Oates, Rapana, Morris, Ferguson, Fusitua, and so on. But if Soward says so...

No changes to contact rules, smash fuck out of each other and pretend it doesn't hurt is still in play. The complete opposite of soccer if you will They're changing from 2 on-field Refs to one and changing ruck infringements from being a penalty to play-on with a re-start on the tackle count to 6 again (both changes I agree with) but that's it, it's business as normal but with no live crowds obviously.

Edit, had to add a couple of vids of the legend Jamie Soward trying to tackle Greg Ingliss. He must still have nightmares about these, it's what happens when a small shit defender gets in the way of a large center with the Try line in his sights

NRL to proceed with single-referee system when play resumes after coronavirus break

    Rugby League 2020 - REBOOTED-12248742-3x2-xlarge-jpg

The dispute between the NRL and the referees' union has been resolved, with the whistleblowers agreeing to the league's move to proceed with one referee for the remainder of the season.

    Key points:
    • Referees who are not required will receive $500 a week
    • The six-again rule for ruck penalties will also be introduced
    • Referees say player safety "does not appear to concern the league's bosses"

Under the deal, 22 full-time referees will be employed both this year and next with the one-referee system to be a "trial" that is reviewed at year's end.

Prepare for some heartache then, they're shit! To be fair, they often start the seasons well and it's not uncommon for them to win something like 8 of their first 10 games and be up there with the ladder leaders then they'll start treading water, then they'll shit themselves towards the business end of the year and not even make the top-8 teams finals playoffs. A quick look shows they're paying 101.00 to win the Premiership, that's unders. Have a few lazy quid on their coach being the first to get sacked this year if you want to make money on them

350k to 400k is the yearly salary figure that been bantered about by NRL journos on Fox sports during the recent dispute. Not a bad hook for working 80 minutes 1 or 2 days each week for 7 months of the year, business class travel and 5* hotels, and being part of a game they love (the journos words, not mine).
