Swarm of american viewers turn to afl to fill sporting void

With American sport cancelled or postponed across the board, many are tuning into Fox Sports 1 to watch the AFL game between Essendon and Fremantle.

FS1 is one of the country’s biggest sports stations, playing everything from Major League Baseball to WWE.
Former NFL punter and American sports commentator Pat McAfee is certainly enjoying himself watching Aussie Rules for the first time.

McAfee, who has twice as many followers on Twitter as the AFL, is clearly entertained by what he is seeing.
    @PatMcAfeeShow

I’ve watched one quarter of Aussie Rules Football and I already know that this sport was supposed to be my calling back in the day.

This was supposed to be my sport.

When my child arrives in the next couple yrs, his ass is gonna be punting & punching balls all around the house.

Just like we’ve been saying for weeks... Essendon is playing NO GAMES tonight

Rather long halftime.. probably smart tbh.. this sport has to be an absolute kick to the sack cardio wise.

What is training camp called? Do they do 2 a days and such? I bet it is disgustingly hellacious to get thru

Puke and rallies happening all over the place I assume

    Pat McAfee

Watching this Aussie Rules Football.. I think it’s my favorite sport I’ve ever seen. About 6 punts a minute right now.

    LET’S GOOOO MATES

Aussie Rules is a weird sport. Especially if you haven’t grown up watching it.
Many Americans tuning in took to Twitter seeking clarity on some of the rules – and we can’t blame them.

GOOD NEWS: there is live sports on right now on FS1.

    ALSO: It’s Australian rules football.

Other people are watching live Australian Rules Football, right?

Live sports alert!!! Aussie rules football is on FS1, but it isn’t too competitive as Essendon is kicking serious behinds (and more importantly, goals) and are up 49-22 over Fremantle in the 3Q.

    David Jones@iPopEditor

FS1 is currently showing live sports!!!

It’s Australian football and I have no idea what’s going on...but sports!

So I'm watching the Australian Football League, this shit kinda lit. Still haven't figured out how they score yet but still

    Ed Snow@seattle_12thman

If someone could give me a quick run down on the basic rules of Australian football that’d be amazing

    Trenton Cody@TrentonJCody

I have now resorted to watching Australian football on FS1. I have no idea what is going on but it’s quite possibly the most entertained that I’ve been in days.

First time I have ever seen this type of football on fs1. It's like rugby mixed with soccer AFL football. Literally only sport left

FOLKS THIS IS NOT A DRILL. EVERYBODY STAY CALM.

THERE ARE LIVE SPORTS ON FS1 RIGHT NOW

ITS AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL, BUT WHO CARES ANYMORE? I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON BUT THIS IS TREMENDOUS CONTENT.

I asked before but can't remember the answer, is Aussie Rules the one where they dress up as pooftahs?

Yes, the team with the shortest shorts wins.

I see that Australian A-League football (soccer) is still being played, albeit in empty stadiums.

if some americans are actually watching this, it's because they are degenerate gamblers.

AFL have announced they are shutting down.

Apparently with China's productivity still down they're struggling to keep up with the demand to provide AFL players with shorter shorts.

Will two months be enough to get all the mankini's out into the shops for the fans to buy?

Well, that was short lived. Whats the point of playing the opening round, Then announcing you are suspending further games??
Means here in Adelaide we miss the hometown derby, or Showdown- Adelaide vs Port Adelaide. No love lost there.

Hoping against reason and hope. Denying reality, then when the states closed borders they had no choice.

But the NRL, that bastion of intelligence, logic and common sense have announced that they will continue. (until the gummit shuts them down!)

Mate, it's a multi pronged issue.

Some of the States are closing their borders (self quarantine for 2 weeks if entering) so, with the AFL being played more widely then the NRL (Rugby League) it has more issues.

With the NRL, it's a HUGE marketing opportunity to recapture some fans.

There are whispers that NSW will close it's borders which will require ALL NRL teams to domicile in NSW.

    Workable, but not ideal.

Plus, with only 3 NRL 'free to air' there are suggestions to free that up so that the many house bound sport nuts have more to watch.

The issue is complicated and multi level.

That's the crux of the issue, innit?

$ signs and opportunity to get one up on the competition.

Ask Rugby how that worked out.

As this continued practice of competitive sporting events, in these proposed cautious times, vacant of cheering crowds completely misses the pointed as to the principled ideals of isolation, containment, and restrictions of viral movement/interaction among everyone and anyone.

    This.

I'm sure there'll be loads of Brit losers betting on them too, rather than virtual horse racing

AFL is a contact sport, played without helmets and padding. No wonder the merkins don’t understand it. lol

Does it make you feel strong constantly pointing horseshit like that out?

Should I insert the typical response here now?

If you are happy to post about pansy padded “elite athletes” in helmets and eye shadow, crack on mate.

AFL is played by real men, not pampered overweight jessies. I used to think that the game interruptions were a marketing space for advertisers, then I realized all the players are so unfit, they need regular breaks to reapply smudged make up.

50% pay cut for players and 80% of staff stood down. No wonder they didn't want to halt the season.
