^ That's exactly what the lads needed to do against Croatia in the WC semi-final, pretty sure it was Sterling, 1 nil up in the first half, exact same passage of play, just had to put his heel through it* for an almost certain goal, pussied out, and well, the rest is history.

    *Ronaldo would have.

I have been quite impressed by the ladies. They get tackled and don't roll around on the floor for 5 minutes, the ref pulls them up and they don't throw tantrums with the whole team gathering around fing and blinding, get a yellow card and barely bat an eyelid and lastly some of the tackle replays are interesting, one slo mo last night with a hand full of tit. All in all, be OK.

    Girly stuff.

This is a proper, manly backheel.

I'm disappointed by Sterling leaving the plastics.

TBH they can put a small decorative shrub up front and their conversion rate is likely to increase now.

Oh dear Plod. What are you doing?

One of three rape allegations made against a Premier League footballer has been dropped.
The player, who has not been named, has also had his bail extended from a date in August until early October, Scotland Yard said.

    Oh, Barcelona.

Now Kounde has signed and they still owe De Jong 17 million Euros in deferred wages, which they are refusing to pay, despite having sold off just about anything they can possibly sell off at the moment. None of their signings can even be registered yet!

Talk about dicing with the future of the club.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s astonishing gamble goes on. The club has sold 10% of its La Liga TV rights for the next 25 years and is close to selling a further 15% for a combined fee of a little over €500 million. In 2021, Barça made €166 million from TV rights. So, it gets €500 million now in return for €1.44 billion—if rights remain constant. The recent trend has been upwards, but it may be that they will tail off. The increased use of streaming could change the model completely, or a Super League may arrive that renders La Liga rights worthless. But this is still a huge gamble—and also commits Barcelona to the Super League course in a way that may not be helpful when it comes to future negotiations.

Selling 49.9% of its marketing company could raise an additional €300 million. Barça president Joan Laporta has spoken euphemistically of “pulling economic levers,” but what he is really doing is mortgaging the future of the club. And perhaps that is a safe enough bet–even if most of the easy revenue streams are already being exploited. This is not like Laporta’s first stint in charge when he turned the club into a truly global business for the first time. The opposition to shirt sponsorship has melted away and Spotify now sponsors the Camp Nou. The easy wins have gone, which perhaps in part explains the baffling recent dabble with NFTs. So the economic situation may not rapidly improve.

Could be worse. They could have assorted members of a distinctly odd looking American family taking dividends of 12 million quid out at regular intervals.

No, that wouldn't actually be worse than their current plight.

But nevermind. There will be other threads for you to try again on during the coming season.

From what I read his contract was rear-loaded so that most of the payments come in the latter stages as a sort of loyalty payment, and he thinks he's entitled to it if he moves before it ends.

The courts will sort that out.

Added: On reading some more, he agreed to defer the 17m when Barca were stricken by the pandemic, and won't move unless they give it to him, which sounds fair enough.

So if the moaners have agreed a fee, they simply need to tack it onto his wages and hey! presto! deal done.

Or he could gamble on winning a Spanish court case.

...the Catalans could turn to Article 41 of the government’s Worker Statutes, which allows organisations to make “substantial modifications to working conditions when there are proven economic, technical, organizational or production reasons.”
By activating Article 41 of the Workers Statutes, Barça can impose a pay cut not only on de Jong but the rest of the squad. In case such a scenario comes into play, the Dutchman would be left with three options.
The first one would be to accept the measure taken by the club, the second would be to reject it and take legal action in court. And the third choice for de Jong would be to reject the club’s imposition and then terminate his contract while receiving suitable compensation from the club.
I'm not sure it would do Barca much good if they play hardball. Who's going to move there knowing their employer can go to court and cut their wages at any time?

For the moment, the allure of the club is clearly still there, but you've gotta be wondering if the same could happen to you, surely? And if they do fuck de Jong over then why stop there?

What baffles me is that they are supposedly desperate to sell a player for upwards of GBP60m, yet continue to risk him in meaningless friendlies.

Regarding United, surely even our board wouldn't risk being played along for this long by a player and their club, would they?

Man United v Rayo Volcano at 10pm.

The German Ladies v English Ladies European Championship final at 11pm.

Hopefully will see some of Eriksen again and Martinez, to compliment the Germans on their victory.

The difference in the 2 teams, ergo the depths of the respective squads, was somewhat sobering when Atletico brought on their "proper" players in the 2nd half to say the least.

From the players who didn't start the game yesterday, you could argue that only 5 or 6 of them (Ronaldo, Eriksen, Varane, Martinez, Shaw and Sancho) would be able to stake a genuine claim for a first team spot.

In 12 months we've gone from being in a position of strength up front to being extremely light. The Greenwood loss was a huge blow (pardon the pun).

That’s the second or third time you’ve asked for a pun to be pardoned in the last couple of days.

More good work from the Upshot.

Barcelona like to call themselves "more than a club", but things are getting deliciously poisonous in Catalonia as the cash-strapped club try to force out their unwanted high earners.

This week's traditional pre-season squad presentation turned very ugly - the fans booed striker Martin Braithwaite relentlessly because he is refusing to leave the club.

And they reserved particular venom for midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who was subjected to chants of "lower your wage, bitch".

Perhaps sensing he wouldn't get the warmest welcome, defender Samuel Umtiti dodged the event entirely, heading to France for some sun instead.

The new season starts tomorrow and the Catalan giants are still £85 million over the salary cap, which means they can't register their new signings, including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and former Chelsea defender Andreas Christiansen.

They're flogging the family silver (selling their future TV revenues), but they also want players like De Jong and Braithwaite to either piss off to another club or accept a huge pay cut.

It's particularly tough on De Jong since they already owe him £35 million in unpaid wages, but Nou Camp top brass claim that contract - signed by the previous regime - was "criminal".

Big talk, particularly from a club who - despite being £1 billion in debt - have spent more on players this summer than any other team in Europe.

Chelsea, Man City, West Ham and Leicester have been warned they face Uefa financial fair play punishments if they cannot get their books back in balance this season.

The four Prem sides were among 19 European clubs that Uefa experts ruled had only met the requirements because of Covid 19 emergency measures or historical break-even results.

Uefa allows clubs to record a loss of just £25m over a three year period, a significant contrast to Prem rules that allow clubs to lose £35m a season.

And as it announced fines totalling £149m against eight European clubs including PSG and Juventus, Uefa said the Prem sides will now face extra scrutiny.

    The UAE?

Why would the UAE be a repository for fines paid to UEFA?
