Foden has been great, lovely balls in, picking out runs. Grealish is the only one showing some will to run at the defence - that aside dismal

BREAKING: MESSI BIDS TEARFUL GOODBYE TO PSG AHEAD OF NEWCASTLE MOVE

    World football thread.-messi-psg-newcastle-jpg

Lionel Messi fought back tears at a press conference this morning in which he confirmed he is leaving Paris Saint-Germain to join Newcastle United.

The 34-year-old bid farewell to his PSG teammates and Parisian officials in an emotional speech during which he spoke of his life-long admiration of Newcastle boss Steve Bruce.

‘My family and myself were convinced that we were going to stay in Paris. But unfortunately, today I am here to say Auf wiedersehen, pet’, the Argentine told Paddy Power News.

‘I was only 34 when I arrived here. And will leave after two months’ loyal service to the club’.

‘I never imagined having to say goodbye, then again, no one imagined anyone could pay me more than PSG could. So there you go’.

Newcastle United are expected to announce his signing in the next few hours. Asked about joining the Geordie outfit, Messi replied:

‘Ever since I was little boy, kicking a ball about the streets of Rosario, I’ve always dreamed of playing for Newcastle’.

‘I remember watching Temuri Ketsbaia lose the plot after scoring a last-minute winner and I said to my mother: ‘One day I will kick the sh*t out of the advertising hoardings at St James’ Park too, mama’.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner also spoke fondly of current Newcastle manager Steve Bruce.

‘Bruce is considered a genius in South America’, revealed Messi.

‘Everyone agrees that Argentina would have won three consecutive World Cups between 2006 and 2014 with Bruce as our national coach’.

‘When we heard he was struck by a cabbage thrown by an Aston Villa fan, there was a national day of mourning in Argentina’.

The diminutive playmaker signed off the press conference by leaping on top of a podium and belting out ‘The fog on the Tyne is all mine’ by Geordie folk-rock band Lindisfarne.

European football's governing body has ordered England to play its next two UEFA competition matches at Wembley Stadium behind closed doors, the second of which is suspended for a probationary period of two years, following crowd trouble at this summer's Euro 2020 final.

UEFA has also fined the English Football Association €100,000 ($116,000) for "the lack of order and discipline inside and around the stadium."

Al Muharraq of Bahrain hosted their Kuwait City visitors tonight and – in truth – brushed them aside to continue their fantastic run in the competition.
Not normally something in which I'd be interested, but notable because the Kuwait City lineup featured....

Christian Eriksen is not permitted to play in Italy this season as a result of the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020, his club Inter Milan said.

Eriksen suffered an on-field cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening game of Euro 2020 against Finland in June.
He had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator on the pitch after his heart stopped, with his teammates surrounding him to shield him from the 38,000-strong crowd.

The match resumed 90 minutes later, with Denmark losing 1-0.

He later had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) device implanted
    — a type of pacemaker which can prevent fatal cardiac arrests by discharging a jolt to restore a regular heart rhythm.

Francesco Braconaro, a member of the Italian Football Federation's technical scientific committee, said in August that Eriksen will not be allowed to play in Italy unless the ICD device is removed.

"The player has been temporarily inhibited by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the current season," the club wrote in a statement on Thursday.

"Although the current conditions of the player don't meet the requirements of achieving sporting fitness in Italy, the same could instead be achieved in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity."

It is unclear as to whether other countries would allow Eriksen to participate in their respective leagues with the ICD device fitted.

Lock them up! Lock them up! (And I can't be arsed reformatting this shit).

Former fifa president sepp blatter and ex-uefa president michel platini have been charged with fraud over unlawfully arranging a payment of 2 million swiss francs ($2.94 million), the office of the attorney-general (oag) of switzerland said.
The two men were indicted following a six-year investigation into the payment that mr blatter authorised to be made from world football's governing body fifa to mr platini in 2011.
mr blatter and mr platini said the payment was for backdated salary.
"this payment damaged fifa's assets and unlawfully enriched platini," switzerland's oag said.
the swiss investigation was opened in 2015 amidst the series of scandals that engulfed fifa. The affair led to a fifa ethics investigation, following which both men were banned from the game and forced to leave their positions.
the oag accused mr blatter and mr platini of "fraud, in the alternative of misappropriation, in the further alternative of criminal mismanagement as well as of forgery of a document."
mr platini, who captained france to victory in the 1984 european championship, was also charged as an accomplice.
mr blatter, 85, and mr platini were both banned in 2016 from football for six years over the payment, made with mr blatter's approval for work done a decade earlier. Both have denied any wrongdoing.
"i look forward to the trial before the federal criminal court with optimism and i hope that this story will come to an end and that all the facts will be dealt with properly," mr blatter said in a statement. mr platini said he had only heard the news of the trial through media reports.
"these methods are an extension of the prosecutor's relentlessness to unduly implicate me in a case in which my entire good faith has been recognised. I fully challenge these unfounded and unfair accusations," he said.
mr platini's lawyer dominic nellen said he was confident the former france and juventus midfielder would prove his innocence.
"from the defence's point of view, it is clear that the investigation should have been discontinued long ago. There are enough witness reports and documents in the case files that prove my client's innocence," he said.
the oag said its investigation revealed that mr platini worked as a consultant for then-fifa president mr blatter between 1998-2002 and that an annual compensation of 300,000 swiss francs was agreed in a written contract.
the oag said mr platini had sent an invoice and had been paid in full but the 66-year-old former france international continued to demand payment.
"over eight years after the termination of his advisory activity, platini demanded a payment in the amount of 2 million swiss francs," the oag said.
"with blatter's involvement, fifa made a payment to platini in said amount at the beginning of 2011. The evidence gathered by the oag has corroborated that this payment to platini was made without a legal basis."
mr blatter said the payment had been delayed because fifa was not able to pay the entire amount and that platini only made his claim for the money in 2010.
the former fifa president said that the payments had been approved by "all responsible fifa bodies" and that mr platini had paid tax on the amount "at his swiss place of residence".
