Nicholas Latifi is set to drive for Williams alongside George Russell as the replacement for Robert Kubica in the 2020 Formula 1 season.

After months of speculation that ROKiT Williams Racing would confirm Nicholas Latifi as their second driver alongside George Russell for the 2020 Formula 1 season, they made it official on Thanksgiving Day.

Williams initially stated that they would not confirm their 2020 driver lineup until after the 2019 season ended, and the 2019 season is scheduled to end this Sunday, December 1 with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit.

They decided to end the speculation early.

Here is what Latifi had to say about this opportunity,
    according to Formula 1.

“I am thrilled to be stepping up as Race Driver for 2020. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team this year, supporting them with the development of the car, and assisting wherever I can trackside and at the factory. I look forward to the journey ahead with the team, and I am excited to make my Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2020.”

Here is what Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams had to add.

“All of us at Williams have been immensely impressed at what he has achieved this year in FIA Formula 2, along with his commitment to the team, and the work that he has put in behind the scenes. Nicholas has become an established and well-respected member of Williams, and we look forward to him stepping up into this new role, as we look to fight our way back to the midfield.”

Did you see the new Mercedes steering wheel?

It has front/back motion as well as normal steering: Apparently it alters the alignment of the front wheels.

Be interesting to see if it passes the scrutineers.

Might also explain why Hammy was the only one to break 100 laps.

Hamilton and Mercedes ahead of the curve on innovation already, quite literally in this case. Good to see at least one team pushing boundaries.

Racing Point as well. They have completely transformed their car..... into a 2019 Mercedes.

The innovative steering system introduced by Mercedes for this season will be banned from 2021.
Mercedes have been cleared to use the system for 2020 and technical director James Allison hopes it will “bring an advantage during the season”.
But the rules are changing for 2021 in such a manner that the system would not be legal under the new regulations.

Michael Masi, race director of governing body the FIA, confirmed the rule change on Friday.
The Mercedes system allows the driver to alter the ‘toe angle’ of the front wheels – their angle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the car – while he is driving.
F1 cars operate with a degree of ‘toe-out’ – which effectively means that the front part of the tyres are turned outwards by a few millimetres.
This is beneficial when the driver turns in to the corner as it gives them more grip and stability but causes a degree of ‘scrub’ on the straights, where the tyre is dragged across the track at an angle, which causes its temperature to rise.
In the Mercedes system – dubbed ‘dual-axis steering’ – the driver can pull on the steering wheel to straighten the front wheels as he comes on to a straight and then push back on it to revert to the ‘toe-out’ position as he enters a corner.
This is allowed under the 2020 rules because the relevant clause says only: “The front wheels are adjusted solely by the steering and under the full control of the driver.”
But the 2021 rules contain a clause which says: “The alignment of the front wheels must only take place through a constant function of a rotational movement of a single steering wheel.”
This would outlaw the push-pull motion of the Mercedes system.

    19th Feb:

Formula 1 is definitely heading to Vietnam in April with the country’s tourism deputy director adamant the race will “not be postponed or delayed”.
    20th Feb:

With the Coronavirus wreaking havoc in China, the F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai is off the table. However, for neighbours Vietnam, there is still plenty of discussion. Although the authorities and the FIA are all for it, other parties are starting to have second thoughts.

In spite of F1 giving the country the green light, German broadcaster RTL will be abstaining from attending. Race organisers assured that the coronavirus crisis would not affect the April 5 event, but RTL is not taking any chances.

RTL boss Manfred Loppe admitted that the organisation is responsible for the health and safety of their employees. As an alternative, the F1 reporting team will operate from a studio in Cologne.
“We came to this decision after querying numerous information points, and the bottom line is that we did not receive what we considered to be a reliable assessment of the situation on site,” he said.
Having done my own reliable assessment, I've cancelled my hotel booking. Fuck that shit, it's only six weeks away, no way the problem will be solved by then.

Meanwhile Ferrari are either up shit creek or trying to pull a fast one. I wonder if snubby will switch his allegiance to Mad Max this season?

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto has admitted the new SF1000 is not quite where the team hoped it would be at this stage in testing.
Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto says that he feels the team’s new SF1000 isn’t as on the pace as the new cars from Mercedes and Red Bull Racing.
Speaking on Friday afternoon after a new testing lap record was set by Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas during the morning session, Binotto said: “I’m not as optimistic as last year and I think the others are faster than us at the moment.”

“How much faster is difficult to judge and we will pull the data in the coming days. But I don’t think we’re as fast as them at the moment. Do we have any concerns? Yes, when you are not as fast as you want to be, but I think it’s too early to define them so these three days have been very important. We have a clear picture which allows better understanding and what will be more important is to develop the car in the right direction.”
“Having said that, it’s a very long season, so there will be time to recover. But, let’s wait for next week and Australia to truly assess what’s the true performance of the car.”

That's a pity as I thought it was a pretty novel idea and would bring some extra differences between cars in the future.

From what I have heard, the system changes the amount of toe-in of the front wheels. (toe-in is where the wheels point inwards rather than parallel when driving in a straight line). In simple terms, Toe-in is an advantage round corners and parallel is best for straight line speed.

The fun is with dynamically adjusting it. I imagine it is automatic, based on tyre forces, I can't think of any other way that a driver could cope with. I could be some sort of compensation for the Mercedes having a longer wheelbase and trying to get more toe-in on the tighter bends to get closer to the shorter wheelbase car performance of the Ferrari etc.

Great idea if it is reliable but it could well cause a few challenging moments if it fails when required...

Mercedes fastest overall in the first testing sessions. Ferrari struggle with reliability in the form of engine failure for Vettel. (Why does that make me smile).

Well the paddock thinks they are trying to pull a fast one.

When will they ever learn that nothing they do will stop Lewis and the Mercedes team giving it everything?

Ferrari have had a slap on the wrist for their engine shenanigans last year which gave them more power than the other teams.

Probably because they didn't win either title.

Meanwhile, with clearer directives and regulations put in place to stop a repeat, their performance is notably down in testing so far.

Oh, and Season 2 of "Formula 1 Drive to Survive" is now on Netflix.

I had no idea that Mad Max had an agreement that if he wasn't in the top three by the summer break he was a free agent.

It seems the FIA's forelock tugging in the face of Ferrari's cheating has not yet quelled the dissent, notably from Red Bull, who think they should be getting $24 million of prize money that they should have had for being second.

The FIA have defended their private settlement with Ferrari over the legality of their 2019 power unit, despite heavy criticism.
Last week the FIA announced that it has reached a “settlement” with Ferrari relating to last year’s engine but did not declare whether the settlement was because the Scuderia’s power unit was legal or if it wasn’t.
Rivals had accused Ferrari of breaching fuel flow rates and by passing the FIA sensors, and following the announcement Mercedes boss Toto Wolff brought all seven non-Ferrari powered teams together to demand an explanation.
Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has even called for “$24 million” in compensation after his team finished P3 in the 2019 Constructors’ Championship behind Ferrari.
In a statement, as quoted by Sky Sports, the FIA said that while it was “not fully satisfied” after their investigation, Formula 1’s governing body decided that “further action would not necessarily result in a conclusive case due to the complexity of the matter and the material impossibility to provide the unequivocal evidence of a breach.”
“The FIA has conducted detailed technical analysis on the Scuderia Ferrari Power Unit as it is entitled to do for any competitor in the FIA Formula One World Championship,” the statement read.
“The extensive and thorough investigations undertaken during the 2019 season raised suspicions that the Scuderia Ferrari PU could be considered as not operating within the limits of the FIA regulations at all times.
“The Scuderia Ferrari firmly opposed the suspicions and reiterated that its PU always operated in compliance with the regulations.
“The FIA was not fully satisfied but decided that further action would not necessarily result in a conclusive case due to the complexity of the matter and the material impossibility to provide the unequivocal evidence of a breach.
“To avoid the negative consequences that a long litigation would entail especially in light of the uncertainty of the outcome of such litigations and in the best interest of the Championship and of its stakeholders, the FIA, in compliance with Article 4 (ii) of its Judicial and Disciplinary Rules (JDR), decided to enter into an effective and dissuasive settlement agreement with Ferrari to terminate the proceedings.
“This type of agreement is a legal tool recognised as an essential component of any disciplinary system and is used by many public authorities and other sport federations in the handling of disputes.”
In an open letter sent to the FIA by Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, Renault, Racing Point, AlphaTauri and Williams, they expressed a “shared commitment to pursue full and proper disclosure in this matter, to ensure that our sport treats all competitors fairly and equally.
“In addition, we reserve our rights to seek legal redress, within the FIA’s due process and before the competent courts.”

Hammy was the only one this morning who had the balls to say it should be called off and that it was only going ahead for money.

Vettel has subsequently said that the drivers wouldn't be afraid to boycott the race if they felt the situation merited it.
