Sir Alex Ferguson’s much-anticipated documentary is set for release at the end of May and to promote it the legendary Manchester United manager has conducted a Q&A session.
The 79-year-old appeared on Zoom with son and director of Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, Jason Ferguson, and presenter Edith Bowman, to discuss the makings of the film, as part of the Glasgow Film Festival, with the final 10 minutes of the chat dedicated to answering fans’ questions.
Over the next two days, we’ll be publishing our legendary boss’s replies in full, with Sir Alex revealing his managerial mindset, what goes into determining whether a player is the right fit or not, and more.
Grab yourself a drink and settle in to read part one in full below…

Sir Alex, growing up in Scotland, did you always think football would be your chosen path in life? Was it always something you wanted to be in your life? Thank you for all you’ve done for MUFC, by the way…
“Well, I speak for every young boy in Govan and Glasgow, that growing up the only thing you had was football. Football every day. That was the way it was. There was nothing else in my life. There are a lot of areas in Britain where they’re cricket players or rugby players, but in Govan the only thing that mattered was playing football and every day of my life was about playing football. No doubt about that.”
What was your mentality as a young footballer and how did your mindset change – or did it change? – when you became a manager?
“No, no. My mindset every time I played a game of football was to win. That was the only thing that mattered. It was the winning aspect of it all the time. I think it was just a natural thing for me. My upbringing was a lot to do with that but the important thing was this inner determination that when I entered the field to play, it was to win. Nothing else mattered. Course, it’s not just all about winning. It’s to play and enjoy it too, but every young kid enjoyed playing their football. Everyone. The added thing was to win and that was definitely part of me.”
Thank you for everything you’ve done for our wonderful club and it’s so great to see you back at games again and in good health. Apart from obvious talent, what was the main personality trait that you looked for in players?
“Well, I think that it could be divided into maybe a few parts. Some players I had were absolute natural footballers, with natural talent. But there were other players who shared my determination, who maybe weren’t the best players but they made themselves the best players, because they had something inside them too. I go back to one of my first defeats as a manager, at 32 years of age. I didn’t expect it. I went into the game eyes wide open, that this was going to be easy. We lost 5-2 to Albion Rovers. I was the manager of East Stirling, the players were on £5 a week, or something like that. I came home and I said ‘if I don’t get Alec Ferguson in my team, I’m not going to succeed’. So I made sure that my players had a mental toughness about them, from that moment on.”
United Quiz: Sir Alex
Out of many successful public figures, it’s always seemed to me that you have incredible instincts. Do you have unbelievable intuition?
“I believe in instinct. I had a good instinct about players and I had a good instinct about watching players who I maybe wanted to buy. I knew that, looking at certain players, I could see traits that told me they were Manchester United players, or Aberdeen players, or St Mirren players. I could see that in certain players I watched. Instinct was really important. Also on instinct, sometimes it’s picking the team. We’re playing certain teams and I’d have an instinct: ‘right, I’m not going to play certain players. I’ll play other players.’ I wouldn’t say it’s intuition, I’d say it’s instinct.”
How did you not get bored of being successful? How did you manage to reset your mindset at the end of each season, to go on and continue to achieve?
“Well, the alternative is enjoying getting beat! That was not part of my life. Listen, I could encapsulate it in this way. If I’m going to walk into the training ground at Carrington as the manager of Manchester United, and I look out on that football field and I see this fantastic training ground, why wouldn’t I want to go in there every day? The only way you can do that is being successful. So, being bored? I was never bored in my life, about anything.”
Well that looks like hard hitting stuff from his son.
Wellbeck is doing well!
Hal knows alright.
Thats why the fucker's flounced
Welbeck the old Rashford

Genuine 2nd placers.
Hardly a massive thing to brag about, but an improvement on the last 7-8 years and no one could really challenge the leader's run of form.
Only 1 team has won more games.
Only 1 team has lost less games.
Only 1 team has scored more goals.
Only 1 team has a better GD.
Only 1 team has more points.
Well done Ole. #Getting there.
For a manager with such little top level experience (ie, none ) to take over such a shit-show and do that within 3 seasons is doing well and progressing the club well.
