    What a c u n t.

He is alleging in his defence that two Albanians injected his sister with a date rape drug. I would imagine a man of Maguire's intellectual stature would easily be able to forensically identify Albanians while pissed out of his tree.

Still, it seems he will have the option of paying his way out of it. Very Thai.

Harry Maguire has been found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery by a three-member misdemeanours court convening on the Greek island of Syros.

The £190,000-a-week Manchester United and England defender had denied all charges and said he would appeal. After the judgment was announced the three-member court retired to deliberate on sentencing.

“I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing,” Maguire said. “I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter – if anything myself, family and friends are the victims.”

Maguire, who was named in England’s squad on Tuesday while the trial was ongoing, allegedly told police, “Do you know who I am? I am very rich, I can give you money,” the court heard as the player went on trial days after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman during a late-night brawl on Mykonos.

The assertion by two police officers who appeared as key witnesses for the prosecution was among a host of unsavoury claims that emerged at a hearing that Maguire’s lawyer, Alexis Anagnostakis, had desperately tried to postpone arguing he had formally received the charge sheet only hours earlier.

In proceedings that from the outset took many by surprise, the three-member misdemeanours court overruled Anagnostakis’s appeal.

Instead it was ruled the trial – attended by the 27-year-old footballer’s father, Alan – would begin as planned on Syros, the capital of the Cycladic isles to which Mykonos belongs. With police surrounding the building in searing temperatures, the case opened with several hours’ delay after officials had posted on the court’s notice board the names of the three suspects: Harry Maguire, his older brother Joe and Christopher Sharman, a friend. They too were found guilty on all charges despite vigorous denials and can also appeal.

The Britons were forced to endure two nights in police cells following the brawl, which is said to have erupted after rival fans publicly taunted the footballer on a day of heavy drinking in a beach bar on the famous party island.

Maguire had flown to Mykonos days before for a holiday that included teammates Marcus Rashford and Brandon Williams, his fiancée Fern Hawkins and his younger sister Daisy.

The defender was alleged to have attempted to bribe law enforcers after being taken to Mykonos’s police station in the wake of the brawl. As the severity of the incident hit home, the centre-back was described by one of the two police officers as not only resisting arrest but pleading to be released. “Please, let me go. I am very rich. I can pay. I am the leader of Manchester United,” he allegedly said.

Another on-duty officer who had rushed to the scene to break up the fight described how he was pushed so hard by the footballer as he tried to detain him that he fell on his back and had to be injected with painkillers.

Apostolakis, who had been flown in from Athens to represent the trio, disputed the account, telling the court that Harry Maguire was deliberately “kicked” and shoved by police officers who also attempted to demean him saying “your career is over”.

Anagnostakis, a leading human rights lawyer, who often defends Britons who get into trouble in Greece, said the brawl had been set off when Maguire learned his sister had been attacked by two men. Describing the pair as Albanians he said they had deliberately “injected” the 20-year-old with a substance that had caused her to instantly faint.

Ashden Morley, a friend of the Maguires called by the defence to corroborate the incident, said the group suspected she had been injected with a rape drug after Hawkins noticed Daisy’s eyes “rolling back in her head”. The group had called the driver of their rented van to take them to the island’s health clinic but found themselves being driven instead to the police station, the lawyer claimed.

Some of the most dramatic moments in the courtroom came when Morley, aged 27, a quantity surveyor, said the group thought they were going to be kidnapped by men chasing them in cars behind the media. “Our bus door opened and five or six males tried to force us off by physically pulling us,” he said recounting the scenes and fear that they were about to be “held at ransom”.

Under Greece’s penal code, Maguire could face a three-year sentence but is likely to be spared as a result of a scheme that allows defendants to convert their sentences into “paid” penalties.

Manchester United said in a statement after the verdict: “Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty to all of the misdemeanour charges made against him and he continues to strongly assert his innocence. It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed the charges and provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defence team minimal time to digest them and prepare. A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied.

“On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire’s legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date.

Suspended sentence... and he's still appealing.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been given a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison after his trial on the Greek island of Syros.
The England defender, 27, was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult after arrest on Mykonos.
Maguire said after Tuesday's verdict that he had instructed his legal team "with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing".
"I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter - if anything myself, family and friends are the victims," he added.
The sentence is suspended for three years because it is a first offence and the charges were misdemeanours.

Greek justice threw the book at Harry Maguire, and fast.

His international football career was put on hold after a court gave him a suspended jail term, for repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult after arrest on Mykonos.

He has now appealed, and is now presumed innocent unless the appeal court finds him guilty.

Why was it so quick to get a conviction?
Partly because, in the eyes of Greek justice, he was "caught red-handed".

"In Greek criminal procedure there is a process known as "in flagrante delicto" and it applies to people caught in the act of committing an offence," says Athens lawyer Konstantinos Starantzis. In other words, in this sort of case it's totally normal.

For up to 48 hours from the time of an alleged offence - until midnight the next day - police can arrest someone without a warrant.

Then, after a preliminary investigation, the suspect must be brought before a public prosecutor, who will decide whether to indict or not. If there's an indictment, a trial must take place either the same day or the day after.

Why were there so many charges?
In Greece, as anywhere else, resistance to arrest and violence towards police officers, if proven at court, is not easily tolerated.

The Syros court was convinced that there was some sort of violence towards the policemen involved in the case for two reasons:

The policemen would have had no legitimate or reasonable cause to persecute Maguire and his friends
The officers presented evidence of their injuries
In the eyes of the judges, Harry Maguire committed both offences, plus that of attempted bribery, so they simply handed him a relevant sentence.

Is it unusual for this sort of case to go to court?
Booze brawls on popular Greek islands are a common occurrence during the summer.

Greek authorities have no interest in either hurting the country's tourism or adding more cases to an already burdened justice system. The reason why this case made it to court was simply because it involved allegations of violence against policemen.

    Maguire's lack of apology 'shocking'

Maguire likely to remain Man Utd captain
Did Maguire get a fair trial?
It appears both due process and the rule of law were followed.

However, with regard to a request brought by Harry Maguire's defence for a postponement of the trial, the judges were not very lenient.

Postponement, especially when a new legal team is hired by the defence, is common in Greek trials. It was not obligatory, though, and the judge was well within his remit to reject it.

In some cases, judges decide to reject such requests for secondary reasons, for example to take advantage of witnesses present in the courtroom who might be absent if the trial takes place a year later, or simply to avoid legal tactics of procrastination.

    What did the defence say?
During this first stage of the legal process, and pending the footballer's appeal, his defence team failed to convince the judges.

England defender Maguire, his brother Joe, and family friend Christopher Sharman denied the charges.

The defence focused heavily on their account of how an initial fight started in the alleyways of Mykonos with a group of Albanians.

Image captionThe alleged offences took place on 20 August - within five days the three men had been convicted
Ioannis Paradissis, a lawyer for two of the policemen involved, said this was no defence for the charges for which Harry Maguire was accused. "They have injuries and the three defendants say they are not guilty but... they don't explain how these injuries were made," he told the BBC's Today Programme.

Ahead of the verdict, the footballer's lawyer, Andreas Anagnostakis, said his client's conduct was justified because the policemen had allegedly attacked him in his "golden leg" and told him "your career is over".

As it was based on Harry Maguire's words, the judges found this defence not proven in court.

According to the prosecution, the attempted bribery charge involved Harry Maguire asking whether he could pay a fine to be released from police custody.

His lawyer did not completely deny that, suggesting "it could have been something that was lost in translation".

    What hope for his appeal?
It is unclear how long that might take but it usually takes a year from the moment an appeal is lodged.

But in Greece an appeal is in effect a retrial, according to Ioannis Paradissis.

"So obviously there is still time for the three defendants to say they are sorry and then I believe that the outcome might be different."

As Maguire's club, Manchester United, point out, by lodging an appeal the verdict has been quashed, the conviction nullified and he has neither a criminal record nor is subject to any international travel restrictions.

In the months before Harry Maguire's appeal, his defence team will face a decision whether to provide a more detailed explanation of his innocence or accept wrongdoing and apologise in exchange for the charges to be dropped.

    Yayyyy.

A step in the right direction.

One De Howler and Hendo takes his place.

Hendo can only get better learning from him in training. Just not at long range shot stopping.

Paul Pogba tests positive for coronavirus, left out of France squad

    Ol' Poggy got the Co-Co.

I suppose wishing he's passed it to Lingard is a bit much.

    Get well soon.

So is this season gonna carry both an injury list and a covid list. First team player has Covid, has to isolate for 14 days. Along with everyone he's trained with. Which is the entire first team squad. The Under 16's will take their place for the next 3 PL games, as the B team and under 18's also had a few players infected and training.

So the question is can they still train together?

With opening day on 12th September the margin is thin.

Looks like Van de Beek in for 40 mill.

Would presume VdB to compete with Pogba and Bruno, but also able to play alongside both in a deeper role.

With Tommy, Fred or Matic coming in as cover/rotation.

Now for a central defender and wide right or center forward.

Upamecano next. He looked a proper fucking player for Leipzig the other week.

Man United target Leipzig's Upamecano after sealing Van De Beek deal - sources

I'd be well pleased with that (while still hopeful that Tuanzebe can get himself off the treatment table every now and then).

Good stuff. Let's hope that goes through.

GK situation strengthened with Hendo back to seriously compete with DDG.

Excellent central Midfield purchase with decent cover for Pogba and Bruno, while also able to play deeper alongside. Tommy, Fred and Matic giving decent enough depth.

An attacker or 2 and job well done.

Not winning the Europa League sticks in the throat given how we battered Sevilla, but we've gotta be winning pots next year if we can bolster the squad with the positions you've said after Donny a big fucking bag of beak right up the hooter signs.

Edit: if we were to get Upamecano and Sancho together with this Dutch lad, I'd put us up there as potential challengers. Maybe still missing a proper goalscorer, which cost us last season in the Europa, but the strength in depth is getting better and the first 11 would be a match for anyone.

When you come up to OT, you should be hung, drawn and quartered on the forecourt.

That said, there's more chance of you seeing your toes than coming up to OT.

Being serious: well off the pace and well rusty. New signings could have been here now ready to step in were it not for Glazernomics.
