    Read Drogba retires today.
His penalty v Bayern earned the cup.

Of course R Madrid 7-43 E Frankfurt must have been a zinger for 120.000 at Hampden.

At last, a relief for defenders: Chelsea legend Didier Drogba hangs up his boots

[/COLOR]Even though he is now 40, there will still be defenders around the world breathing a sigh of relief that former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has retired.
Many have tried to stop the forward over the years, but only Father Time succeeded.
The striker, until today the player-owner of Phoenix Rising, played for eight clubs in all — plus a successful international career with the Ivory Coast — but he is most synonymous with Chelsea.
The first of his 164 goals in a Chelsea shirt came at Crystal Palace in August 2004, shortly after he arrived for a then club-record £24 million from Marseille.
Chelsea spent a fortune on strikers before (and since) his arrival, with few proving value for money. But everyone at Selhurst Park that night would have had little doubt about Drogba’s quality when they saw his towering frame climb above the Palace defence to send an emphatic header into the bottom corner.

His goal tally alone secured Drogba’s place as a Chelsea legend — he currently sits in fourth place on the club’s all-time scoring charts — but he will be most fondly remembered by those at Stamford Bridge for the timing of his strikes.

Other Premier League leading men, such as Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry, may have found the net more often, but Drogba was the greatest at doing it when it mattered most. He boasts the record of scoring in nine cup finals for the club and only once was he on the losing side after doing so.
The most memorable occasion did not count towards his overall record, but it was the most valuable of the lot: his decisive penalty that beat Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer in a penalty shootout six years ago to ensure the Blues won the Champions League for the first time.
Having already beaten the German with a trademark header to take the game into extra time, Drogba stepped up to take the decisive spot-kick.

“It is written in the stars,” proclaimed co-commentator Gary Neville. Like everyone else in the Allianz Arena that evening, the former England right-back knew Drogba would succeed.
The Chelsea dressing room was a powerful one back then, yet Drogba was just as an important figure as captain John Terry, midfielder Frank Lampard and keeper Petr Cech.

    (Getty Images)
He was the one who gave an emotional speech in the dressing room afterwards and then bought every squad member a Super Bowl-style ring to commemorate the occasion.
Later that year, Chelsea fans voted him their greatest-ever player — some feat considering the competition and also because he was unpopular in the first few seasons due to a tendency to exaggerate fouls.
The manager who brought him to west London, Jose Mourinho, is not always the easiest for players to get along with, yet their relationship endures to this day.

Didier Drogba's Chelsea career: What the striker won

    5show all
Mourinho once said: “I don’t say Didier was the greatest player I have worked with, but he was a great player, a great friend and somebody who will be part of my life for ever.”
Everyone connected to Chelsea will feel the same

UEFA Cup Final 1981 (over two legs) Ipswich vs AZ'67. I watched the first leg at Portman road where Ipswich won 3-0 and went on to win the cup despite losing 4-2 in the second leg. I also watched the quarter finals against St Etienne where Ipswich played brilliantly.

Always enjoyed Portman road, lovely pitch and lovely people...

What a time for football with the likes of Villa, Forest and Ipswich at the top of the tree in the late 70s/early 80s. Sadly, those days look like they'll never be seen again.

    Souness' peno wasn't bad.

Would have loved to have seen him and Keano come up against each other when in their prime.

Would imagine it would have been Scotland 1 Ireland 0 by way of a knock out.

You never know, some sheikh could come in and turn them into another Arab Fantasy Football team.

At least they'd have the history of winning the European cup before.

Though not Ipswich, they'd just be another Man City.

The '99 and '05 finals are a case of you'll never forget where you were when watching them.

^ I was in a Lebanese restaurant in Manchester in 2005 and we'd sworn we wouldn't watch it lest those bastards win it. One of my best mates was watching it though and waltzed in at H/T to tell us it was happy days and the mickeys were getting done.

We're barely on speaking terms to this day.

3 CL finals in 4 seasons. Not bad, really. Putting Barca out in the semis in '08.

Suppose someone could have a laugh by putting up City losing a CL Final......

    Oh.
