Australia's Matt Graham 'over the moon' as he celebrates silver medal in Pyeongchang

A bar near the Phoenix Snow Park in Pyeongchang, interestingly called Nuts, has been co-opted over the past few days by the families and friends of Australia's freestyle skiers.
And this is where Matt Graham's close-knit support group gathered to celebrate after his silver medal in the men's moguls.
"It means the world having such strong supporters over here in Korea," Graham said.
"It's freezing cold over here and they all out here cheering me on, and I can hear it at the top, and [it] gets me through the night, so it's pretty awesome."
It was a chaotic night, seeing many highly ranked skiers including world champion Ikuma Horishima of Japan crash out.
But Matt Graham is known as Mr Consistency … only Canada's all-conquering Mikael Kingsbury, who has dominated the sport, beat him.

"I knew as soon as I got the score (of 82.57) that that was going to be enough to medal, it was just where it was going to be on the podium," Graham said.

"The next guy came down, I got ahead of him, and I thought OK, worst case bronze, I'll take that. But anything higher will be better.
"Mik (Kingsbury) put down a smoke show, unbelievable about him.
"Yes, over the moon. It is still settling in."

This is easily one of the fiercest rivalries in the history of sports...They will probably meet for the gold medal...

Winter Olympics: Yuzuru Hanyu makes figure skating history

A three-month layoff had cast doubts over Japanese skating star Hanyu's appearance at the Olympics. But the "Ice Prince" became the first man to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in men's singles since 1952.

Defending champion Yuzuru Hanyu underlined his status as the greatest figure skater of his era after clinching gold in the men's singles on Saturday. Not since Dick Button in 1952 had a skater won back-to-back Olympic golds in the discipline.
"Just happy. I can't say anymore, just happy," Hanyu said through his ever-present smile. "I just did my best today. I don't know if this is the best of my skating life, but I can say from my heart that I skated my best today."
His 2014 victory in Sochi made him a cult figure in Japan, with an army of fans following him wherever he goes and showering him with Winnie the Pooh soft toys.

His supporters were out in force in Pyeongchang and Hanyu did not disappoint. It was not a flawless performance, one combination jump in particular almost tripped him up. His free skate routine was a joy to watch however, and gave him a combined score of 317.85 to give him a cushion of almost 11 points over his Japanese compatriot Shoma Uno (306.90) and six-time European champion Javier Fernandez (305.24).

"I know I didn't do the perfect programme but I was satisfied with what I did and it got me an Olympic medal," Fernandez admitted. "I've been dreaming about it and it's been a big goal for me. I knew it was going to be my last Olympics so it's true that I was a little bit more nervous than on Friday."
That skate on the previous day's short program was Hanyu's first in over three months. A knee injury had kept him out of training and cast doubts he would even be able to take part in the Games.

"I worried a lot of people as I could not practise because of my injury. So there was stronger support than before," he told Japanese broadcaster NHK. "I was so fortunate. I'm feeling gratitude. I was able to make a jump that I wanted to do with concentration."

The women’s 500-meter speed skating final on Sunday was never in doubt. Nao Kodaira of Japan sprinted ahead from the start and set an Olympic record with a time of 36.94 to clinch the gold medal.
Kodaira, 31, entered the tournament as the favorite having won gold at the World Championships in the 500 meters, as well as the sprint, and is already the world record holder in the 1000 meters. South Korea’s Lee Sang Hwa the 28-year-old, two-time defending Olympic champion claimed the silver, but was distraught afterwards and had to be consoled by Kodaira. In a display of good sportsmanship, the two competitors from contentious nations embraced afterwards.
Kodaira’s gold medal ended a 20-year gold medal drought for the Japanese in women’s and men’s speed skating.

An anti-doping case has been opened against Russian medal-winning curler Alexander Krushelnitsky, says the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).
Krushelnitsky, who won bronze with his wife in the mixed doubles at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday, is suspected of testing positive for meldonium.
Cas opened a case against the 25-year-old following a request from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
A hearing date has not been set and a B sample result is expected on Monday.

Russian figure skater Zagitova brings first gold to OAR at PyeongChang 2018



"Olympic Athlete from Russia Alina Zagitova has finished first in the women’s figure skating event to bring home the first gold medal for her team at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

Zagitova’s teammate and training partner, Evgenia Medvedeva, who won the free program on Friday, settled for silver as she failed to close the gap she had after the short program.


With a perfect result of 239.57 points, 15-year-old Zagitova clinched the gold medal, the second in a row for Russia in women’s figure skating. Adelina Sotnikova also took home gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.


Medvedeva, who was recovering from a foot injury just before the PyeongChang Olympics, finished second, 1.31 points behind the newly-crowned champion.
Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond, who stumbled on one of her jumps during the free program, earned bronze with a result of 231.02 points"
