    The Premier League 2017/2018

Well the curtain raiser is on Sunday at 8pm Thailand time:

    Sunday, 6th August
English Super Cup (Community Shield) - FINAL
    Arsenal vs Chelsea

No sign of a Thailand listing yet, which means it has a good chance of being on Thai TV, check the Bangkok Post on the day.

It is on Astro Supersport 4 however, and a gazillion other channels if you stream:

Arsenal - Chelsea Live Streaming and TV Listings, Live Scores, News, Videos - August 6, 2017 - England FA Community Shield :: Live Soccer TV

There will be a new innovation if it is level at full time:

ABBA will be taking the penalties. That should be a crowd pleaser. I quite like Agnetha meself.

    Oh, hang on.

The new 'ABBA' penalty shoot-out format will be used for Sunday's Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Arsenal, the Football Association has announced.

If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the London rivals will head straight into a shoot-out to decide the winner and a new system, aimed at being fairer on the team taking the second penalty, will be trialled.

The system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating, so AB BA AB BA and so on instead of AB AB AB AB etc.

At this early stage I'd be inclined to pick one of City or Chelsea to win it. I can't see any one team pulling away like Chelsea did last year though with teams (hello Spurs!) strengthening like they are.

It will be interesting to see what Everton do this year too although I see Rooney is back to stinking the place out again after a brief upturn in pre season.

Yep, without a striker who can actually put the ball in the net I can't see Everton finishing above mid-table.

And this season's sack race will be 'won' by Mark Hughes.

It's also going to be another long, long year in the North East.

Everton were 7th last season 15 points above Southampton 8th who were only above Bournemouth 9th on goal difference.

If Saints can finish above Everton this season would be great, but as long as we don't finish below Bournemouth would be a more realistic result.

Southampton aren't looking for anymore signings it would seem, the squad numbers have been published.
Will van Dijk still be in the squad though this time next week..?

Full list of 2017/18 squad numbers:
    2 Cédric
    3 Maya Yoshida
    4 Jordy Clasie
    5 Jack Stephens
    7 Shane Long
    8 Steven Davis
    10 Charlie Austin
    11 Dušan Tadić
    13 Alex McCarthy
    14 Oriol Romeu
    16 James Ward-Prowse
    17 Virgil van Dijk
    19 Sofiane Boufal
    20 Manolo Gabbiadini
    21 Ryan Bertrand
    22 Nathan Redmond
    23 Pierre-Emile Højbjerg
    25 Florin Gardos
    26 Jérémy Pied
    27 Sam Gallagher
    28 Stuart Taylor
    30 Will Wood
    32 Alfie Jones
    33 Matt Targett
    34 Jake Flannigan
    35 Jan Bednarek
    38 Sam McQueen
    39 Josh Sims
    42 Jake Hesketh
    43 Yan Valery
    44 Fraser Forster

All good players.. but too many prone to injury.

Forster needs to get back on form if we stand a chance.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

It would be great to see another Leicester City style win from an underdog. Bournemouth manager should have found his feet now. Everton, despite Cyrille's downer, have a quality manager and a useful attacking side.
    Newcastle under Rafa maybe?
No, it ain't gonna happen again this century. Unless you still count Spurs as underdogs.

The league is set up so that all but the top 5 are making it harder and harder to go and get a win. Unlike the European leagues, there are no easy 3 pointers in the premier league.
If Couthino stays, I'm liking the look and style of Liverpool more and more.
    Fuck the plastic foreign sides.

It's only 1%, but it's a start, and in the cnut soup that is modern football, Mata seems to be a decent egg.

    William Hill's odds are interesting:

    7/4
    Man City

    10/3
    Man Utd

    7/2
    Chelsea

    10/1
    Tottenham

    12/1
    Arsenal

    12/1
    Liverpool

    80/1
    Everton

    200/1
    Leicester
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    1000/1
    Huddersfield

Spurs and Liverpool are worth a punt at those odds (although I never could on that lot).

Possibly. Not a very intimidating image or statement of intent, is it?

Yorkshire-association choices could include Terriers obviously, Puddings, Tea, or, erm.. Rippers.

Maybe incorporating an image of Peter Sutcliffe into the club design might induce a bit more trepidation into opponents, in our first season back in the big time for quite a a while?

Games against 'The Hammers' would be particularly poignant.

There appears to be no mention of ferrets or flat caps.

^ hope you filled your boots Arry. Best team on the day won in the end. Not sure about the new penalty system, the toss loser looks to get an advantage now, especially if they miss the first pen. Why was Courtois the second on the list following a defender? Nuts

I can't say I like that new system and I can't say it makes much difference.

At the end of the day, you've either got the balls or you haven't.

Courtois took that penalty like a goal kick, didn't he?
