Thread: Don Revie v Brian Clough 1974.

Worth a watch. I only saw Cloughie's sides, but they were good teams.

It's tough to knock what Bobby Robson did, and we were very unlucky in both the 86 and 90 World Cups when we had players that were genuinely capable of competing with the very best. Could Clough have made the difference? We'll never know, but it would have been some ride.

+1 for "Damned United". -Great film, with Michael Sheen playing a blinding part as Cloughie, imo.

The book was a good read...film was also great entertainment.

I got half a crown from Cloughie, when I was younger, he was managing Hartlepools and they had the pre-game buffet in my dads pub, Christ he could Hoover up the booze.

Agree with all the England team comments, he would have never opened supermarkets in the Middle East or towed the line for the FA...still a fucking legend.

Yes they will have setbacks due to inexperience, but they will learn quickly and bring the fans back to watch proper football.
Those who watched that video will recall Clough offering to work under Revie with England youth. He was far sighted even in 1974.

Agree totally about the U21's but the trouble is most of that team will disappear into the Championship with only 2-3 of them making it into the premier league because of the amount of money that is able to be spent on foreign "stars".

Fair comment Crocman.

They'd be better off sending players from the Champiomship, most of the UK players in the premier league play against the foreign stars week in week out and know they're not good enough.

Just because they can't get a game in the premiership, doesn't mean thy are rubbish. How else did we win the world cup?
I watched them and they are technically better than the seniors, yet very few have played more than a handful of games for their premier league clubs. They can play in premier league reserves or get 1st team experience in the championship. Playing regularly for England still increases their value.

Never said they were rubbish Chas, just that the top clubs have this stupid notion that they have to have big names in their team to compete at the top. It is virtually impossible to keep a team like this together once they pass the age limit. None of them are ready to step up to full national straight away and there in lies the problem.

Yep, pressure also from sponsors to have the "big" names in, I remember Beckham breaking his toe, what a noise when it looked like he would miss a big tournament.

Funny how we've got it right with a lot of sports I.e. Boxing, rugby (well we will see on Sat.), many Olimpic events, cricket and even tennis . But football remains for me at least a disaster at national level.
