I'll compare him with whoever is opposing him on the field, whether you like that or not is irrelevant. Anyway we are playing the All Blacks in November at Murrayfield so we will see how Russel does against whoever you put out presuming Gatland is unlikely to pick him for the Lions tests although I imagine he will get a run out in a midweek game.

This thread is about the Lions tour. Russell has been called up as a replacement. Is it because he plays for the #4 ranked team in the world, or because he happens to be in the area and can get to NZ quickly?

I'll answer that for you. None of the above. It's because he has potential and Gatland sees a chance to borrow a few more Jocks to even up the Lions numbers. If Gatland were not sizeist, he should have picked George Ford.
I feel for Rhys Webb. Played extremely well so far whoever he has been partnered with. Murray gets the shirt because his Irish partner Sexton is now the default 10.

Impressed with Teo, Jonathon Davies and Faletau last night. Expected more from the Maoris.
Jaimie George must be nailed on to start at hooker and there are some interesting choices to be made at lock.
    Roll on Saturday.

So I finally got around to watching Aus v. Scotland.

For all the talk about "flair" and whatnot the Scots constructed precisely one try in beating the Woeful Wallabies by five points.

I dunno why they don't just throw red shirts on the Scotland 15, rename them 'The Lions', and be done with it!

NZ's most famous whitebait fisherman to lead the Chiefs against the Lions in what will be his 100th match for them.

Hell of a nice guy and dead set legend.

Depleted line-up but Messam and Elliot on the bench will no doubt have their second outings against the Lions (not sure that has been done before?):

Rugby: Stephen Donald to lead Chiefs into Lions' den - NZ Herald

Chiefs to play Lions at Waikato Stadium on Tuesday (Chiefs caps in brackets):

    1. Siegfried Fisi'ihoi (24)
    2. Liam Polwart (2)
    3. Nepo Laulala (11)
    4. Dominic Bird (25)
    5. Michael Allardice (20)
    6. Mitchell Brown (14)
    7. Lachlan Boshier (15)
    8. Tom Sanders (19)
    9. Finlay Christie (6)
    10. Stephen Donald (c) (100)
    11. Solomon Alaimalo (6)
    12. Johnny Faauli (5)
    13. Tim Nanai-Williams (82)
    14. Toni Pulu (21)
    15. Shaun Stevenson (21)

    Reserves:

    16. Hika Elliot (116)
    17. Aidan Ross (2)
    18. Atu Moli (24)
    19. Liam Messam (159)
    20. Mitchell Karpik (5)
    21. Jonathan Taumateine (6)
    22. Luteru Laulala (0)
    23. Chase Tiatia (0)

The Lions side has a definite 'second string' look to it.

Interesting considering Gatland made a pointed barb at Henry for doing exactly the same thing.

Also a little surprised to see Lawes in there, thought the stand-down protocol would've been longer than that:

    Lions team:

    15. Liam Williams
    14. Jack Nowell
    13. Jared Payne
    12. Robbie Henshaw
    11. Elliot Daly
    10. Dan Biggar
    9. Greig Laidlaw
    8. CJ Stander
    7. Justin Tipuric
    6. James Haskell
    5. Courtney Lawes
    4. Iain Henderson
    3. Dan Cole
    2. Rory Best (captain)
    1. Joe Marler

    Replacements:

    16. Kristian Dacey
    17. Allan Dell
    18. Tomas Francis
    19. Cory Hill
    20. Alun Wyn Jones
    21. Gareth Davies
    22. Finn Russell
    23. Tommy Seymour

So there has been an unveiling of a statue for Sir Colin Meads in his hometown of Te Kuiti today. For those that don't know Te Kuiti is a tiny town in the North Island, most famous for having produced the Meads brothers and... Well probably just that.

Anyways I mention it in here because I just saw a news clip of it (can't post it here for some reason unfortunately) and there was a group of Lions supporters at the event who were cheering him on.

Bloody lovely that. Massive props to them.

All Blacks -11 in the handicap betting for the first test on Saturday, so think i'll have a wedge on the All Blacks just so have an interest in the game. ABs to win by 12+ should be easy money.

A nice story about the brotherhood, camaraderie and fraternity of rugby followed by 'ole misery guts here.

Just don't watch, bboy. I'm sure there's some chavball on instead!

Think you are confusing me with your mate Sybil, he's the one into chavball. I'll be watching and cheering on the All Blacks, needing them to win by 12 or more, should be easy money.

Nope pretty sure I meant you... Yep I just checked, I defo meant you.

What are the odds of you having a bleat/whinge during the game about the lack of Scottish players 12+ times? Pretty short I'd imagine.

Well seeing as i have no interest in chavball you are yet again mistaken but that's no surprise is it. The first test match has nothing to do with Scotland, it is a game between New Zealand and a team made up of players from Ireland, Wales and England. I will be backing the team from New Zealand even more now than I would have done previously due to money now being involved.

It was just a suggestion. Chavball just seems more suited to you.

I know Lions fans/supporters from every nation, Scotland included, and they'll all be watching and cheering their team on. And there were those lads I referenced earlier: bunch of Lions supporters who travelled to little old bumfuck Te Kuiti to see a legend of the NZ game being honored. Chaps with zero connection to the man save for a common love of the game.

And then there's you, 'ole misery guts, having a cry because the team/players selected doesn't match his subjective opinion.

The Scots showed the Lions just how to beat the All Blacks by tackling and tackling and slowing the game down.

Yes the Wobblies were horrid, scored more tries but the Scots never gave in.

I also believe it was the Jocks first win ever in Sydney.

    And they deserved it.

As boring and tedious as, ooh say, taking what someone has said about you and just repeating it back to them?

'Cos that's pretty boring and tedious. Witless also.

I was absolutely amazed at the group support for the Lions when I attended the first test in Brisbane last time they toured OZ.

Such an atmosphere I have never experienced before.

Same exact thing when I was in NZ for the 2005 tour.

Win/lose/draw they sure know how to have a good time. I don't know about Aussie crowds but they're a refreshing change from the relatively dour Kiwi ones.

Errm you're the one who keeps mentioning chavball for reasons only known to yourself on a thread about rugby. So whatever your obsession or fascination with chavball is go play on a chavball thread where i'm sure Sybil would be happy to contribute. This chiefs team got a chance of beating the Lions tomorrow?

    C'mon you two.

I know you both and lets keep wog ball, soccer or chav ball out of this discussion.

    Please!

And I believe tomorrow's game is a waste of time. Two under strength teams going at it for what?

    Bring on the first test.

Rugby fans from the UK are generally well heeled due to it mainly being a public school sport, so plenty of cash to splash around and have a good time without the violence you get from Ants beloved Chavball fans, even during the 6N every year win, lose or draw a good time is always had before, during and after the game with new friends made every year.

Probably not, second-stringers and ring-ins mostly. I'll discuss that with proper rugby fans though.

Lions -5 on the handicap for tomorrows game, could be worth a flutter.

That would explain the first time you mentioned chavball, when you yet again made one of your many incorrect assumptions about me, but what's the explanation for the rest of the times? Don't think i'd class you a proper rugby fan, more like someone who just has a passing interest in the game when NZ play.

Haha, this from the guy betting against the Lions just so he'll have an interest in the game (and because he's really bitter and small-minded).

    Edited:

Real rugby fans: Yay, Lions tour!!

    Boringboy: *Epic Whinge!*
