Manchester City climbed to the top of the Premier League table after handing West Brom another home hammering.

No team in Europe's top five divisions has conceded as many goals at home as Sam Allardyce's Albion and they were ruthlessly exposed again by a brilliant attacking display.

For the second week running City were the beneficiaries of a contentious offside call but there can be no doubt that they would have routed the hosts regardless.

Ilkay Gundogan continued his inspired run in front of goal with two excellent strikes, Joao Cancelo scored while an offside flag was raised and several players seemed to stop, and Riyad Mahrez powered in a fourth before the break.

Raheem Sterling got in on the act in the second half as City end a day on top of the table for the first time this season.

Defeat leaves 19th-placed West Brom six points adrift of safety going into a massive game against Fulham on Saturday - live on BBC One, the BBC Sport website and the iPlayer.

Lawro's predictions v guitarist Alex Sprogis from post-punk band TV Priest
    Relentless City roll on
City were without Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus - introduced at 5-0 - and had no out-and-out forward in their team, and still could have scored more goals in an 11th straight win.

Phil Foden had already had a shot turned on to the post when the superb Gundogan controlled a pass over the top, swivelled and clipped the ball into the far corner in one fluid movement.

Then came the game's bizarre second goal.

Sian Massey-Ellis flagged Bernardo Silva offside as he was played in down the right. His cutback to Cancelo was chipped into the top corner, with the flag still raised and some players stationary.

    Report
A VAR check confirmed that Bernardo was in fact onside and the goal stood, to Allardyce's disbelief.

Just hours before kick-off authorities sought to clarify a quirk to the offside law that had allowed Silva to score a highly controversial goal for City against Aston Villa in their 2-0 win last week.

Any controversy about this one was short-lived though as Gundogan again demonstrated brilliant awareness to take the ball off Romaine Sawyers inside the area and drive home a seventh goal in eight Premier League appearances.

Mahrez thundered in a fourth, Sterling had a tap-in and Rodri pummelled the crossbar. Could City be champions again? They will take some stopping from here.

    'Genius or just misunderstood?'
Pep Guardiola called Allardyce "a genius" before the game but his impact on Albion has been anything but inspired.

It is just six weeks since Albion held City to a draw in Manchester on a night when goalkeeper Sam Johnstone excelled.

That result left City in sixth place with West Brom two points from safety. Slaven Bilic was sacked in the aftermath and West Brom's defensive record has been appalling since.

In their past five home games Albion have shipped 22 goals - including five on three separate occasions - a record for any five top-flight games since Aston Villa in December 1935.

There is no disgrace in losing to a City side in such form, of course, but Allardyce will be in danger of seeing his side cut adrift if he does not make a difference soon.

    'Play to the whistle'
Former England defender Stephen Warnock, discussing Man City's first goal on BBC Match of the Day: "Sian Massey-Ellis puts her flag up a bit early because the phase of play hasn't been completed.

"A lot of the players look along and they see that flag and shut off. You can see Romaine Sawyers with his arm up. Then they have to react because the whistle hasn't gone. But that should be the first thought: 'whistle hasn't gone so we should carry on.'"

Big Sam's homecoming - the stats
West Bromwich Albion have lost five Premier League home games in a row for the first time since December 2004 (another run of five).
Manchester City's win sees them finish the day top of the Premier League table for the first time this season, becoming the ninth different side to end a day top this term, the most within a single top-flight campaign since 1986-87 (also nine).
Manchester City have won seven consecutive top-flight games for the first time since August 2019 (a run of 15).
West Brom's Sam Allardyce is the first manager since Chris Ramsey at QPR in March 2015 to lose his first four home Premier League games in charge of a club.
Phil Foden made his 100th appearance for Manchester City in all competitions, scoring 24 and assisting 17 since his debut for the club in November 2017.
    Shalom

Liverpool v Man City: Why Sunday is win or bust for Reds' title hopes - Danny Murphy analysis

I wouldn't write Liverpool off in the Premier League title race just yet - that would be silly with the quality they have got and the mentality this team has shown in the past.
But, although we are only just past the halfway mark of the season, Sunday's game with leaders Manchester City has become a must-win game for Jurgen Klopp's side if they are going to retain their crown.

Not only is it an opportunity for Liverpool to narrow the gap and regain some of the momentum they lost in Wednesday's disappointing defeat by Brighton, a victory would also give other teams some confidence by showing that City are still beatable after racking up nine league wins in a row.
The way City are playing and the run they are on, that is clearly going to be tough. I don't see many weaknesses with them at the moment, especially defensively where they have gone up a notch or two, maybe more.
If Liverpool can win at Anfield, it gives them hope and a chance of retaining their title. If they don't, then it's going to be almost impossible for them to catch City, and I am not sure anyone else can either.
    What's changed about City?

Manchester City now title favourites thanks to 'incredible' defenceI didn't see this City run coming - I don't think anyone did. It's down to phenomenal coaching and great management from Pep Guardiola, and he and his players deserve great credit.
They were obviously aware of how many games they lost last season, and how many goals they conceded - and they have changed their philosophy a little bit because of that.
I have noticed they don't press as high as often, and they are happy sometimes to sit off a little bit more now. Playing like that, with less intensity, is sensible game management anyway because of the number of games they have to play.
It is working because, generally, the full-backs don't overlap and go high up the pitch. Instead, they play more inside. That gives them a more solid central spine - if the opposition go down the sides then that is fine, but they are not coming down the middle.
That area is more condensed anyway, because they are not playing with an out-and-out striker. Instead, they have lots of midfielders on the pitch, and they all want the ball.

Burnley 0-2 Man City: We could have done better - GuardiolaPlaying this way did not get them results earlier in the season, but they stuck at it. Now, they still might not make as many chances as they did in the past, but they are dominating possession and controlling games better than before.
Liverpool's challenge is to try to disrupt that, and I think I know a way they can be less passive than they have been in recent matches.
Reds need to get their bite back in midfield

Of course Liverpool's poor form in the past couple of months is worrying in terms of their title hopes this season, but I don't think it is a long-term cause for concern.
They have had a huge amount of enforced changes in the team because of their well-documented injury problems, in what is a unique campaign with such a relentless fixture schedule.

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton: Reds 'mentally fatigued' in defeat says Jurgen KloppPlayers have been moved from midfield to defensive positions, which affects the balance of the side. As I said on Match of the Day after the midweek Brighton defeat, that has meant the units and partnerships that were the cornerstone of Liverpool's success in the past have been lost.
Last season's strongest midfield three of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum have hardly played together as a unit in the Premier League in 2020-21 - just seven minutes of the opening-day win over Leeds.
When they play in their proper positions, they all know their jobs, and they work as a cog with the movement of the rest of the team. For example Henderson always covers for Trent Alexander-Arnold when he goes flying down the right wing.
I'd definitely bring Henderson back into midfield on Sunday, because they need him there. Yes, Klopp might have to put in one of his new centre-backs for that to happen, but otherwise what was the point of bringing them in?
Henderson brings leadership wherever he is playing but, in midfield, he gives them that energy and bite they have been missing in the middle of the pitch, which will be particularly important given the way City play and the possession they will enjoy.
After going 68 home games undefeated in the Premier League, Liverpool have suffered back-to-back losses against Burnley and BrightonAn open game, or another cagey one?

Looking at the Reds' upcoming fixtures, the tests keep on coming - first City, then Leicester, RB Leipzig in the Champions League and then Everton - all in the next fortnight.
I think they will relish that run of games, though. They thrive against better opposition and it's always the bigger games with the most pressure that show the true quality of a team and a squad. It will motivate them even more.
City have a bit of a point to prove too, because they have not won at Anfield for so long, and even if they don't need to go hell for leather because of their strong position at the top of the table, they always try to score goals.
That's why I think it will be more open than some of the other big games we have seen recently, like Manchester United's bore-draw at Anfield last month.
Liverpool need a win so badly this time they cannot just look to shut up shop, and with the players they are missing I am not sure they could keep City out anyway. They have to go after the game, and that will mean chances at the other end too.
Danny Murphy was speaking to BBC Sport's Chris Bevan.

Yep, until the FA break loose of the Nazi's and Krauts in Switzerland under FIFA then terrorist funders will be allowed to own teams.
