    Bristol City Thread

A thread for the Cider Army...

Founded in 1894, the club competed in the Southern League and Western League, being crowned Western League champions in 1897–98. They were admitted into the Football League in 1901 and won the Second Division in 1905–06. They finished second in the First Division the following season, three points behind champions Newcastle United, and went on to lose to Manchester United in the 1909 FA Cup final. Relegated in 1911, they dropped to the third tier in 1922, though would claim the Third Division South title in 1922–23 and again in 1926–27. They were returned to the third tier in 1932, remaining there until they won the Third Division South again in 1954–55. Having been relegated in 1960, Bristol City won promotion from the third tier in 1964–65 and then from the second tier in 1975–76. They played four seasons in the top-flight before being relegated in three consecutive seasons by 1982.
Bristol City spent just two seasons in the Fourth Division and went on to win the Associate Members' Cup (Football League Trophy) in 1986. Promoted out of the Third Division in 1989–90, the club were relegated in 1995 and again in 1999 after another promotion in 1997–98. Bristol City won the Football League Trophy again in 2003, and were promoted from League One in 2006–07. Relegated after six seasons in the Championship, they won the Football League Trophy for a third time in 2015 on their way to the 2014–15 League One title, and have remained in the Championship since that promotion.
They have played their home games at Ashton Gate since moving from St John's Lane in 1904. The club's home colours are red and white, and their nickname is The Robins—a robin featured on the club's badge from 1976 to 1994 and from 2019 onwards. Their main rivals are Bristol Rovers, with whom they contest the Bristol derby, and Cardiff City, with whom they contest the cross-border Severnside derby.

Ashton Gate has got a bit lively recently ...

^ My mum grew up just down the road from Ashton Gate. My Grandad used to queue up for work every morning by Bristol docks to see if he got picked that day by the foreman. He was a riveter in the shipyard.

But anyway, I appreciate the thread Joe. I am a Bristol City supporter but not fanatical enough to actually know any of the players names, or even the manager lately, to be honest. I did recently get a Bristol City top from Lazada though.

I'll fully engage with this thread once we're in the Premiership!

This could be the worst thread ever!

Or, maybe the second worst thread ever...

I'd like to see Bristol City do well, me guesstimate is 11th place this season.

    ^ You optimist!

I didn't start this thread but feel under pressure to show some interest, so while we're waiting for City to get promotion to the Premiership I have a few memories...

I remember watching big Joe Jordan come on for city at Ashton Gate, which would have been his last ever appearance. He was City's manager at the time but due to injury we ran out of forwards, so he put himself on to make up the numbers. This would have been late 80s I guess and I remeber he looked a bit past it.

I also remember getting a bus up to Wembly for the Freight Rover final, I think we were playing Tranmere Rovers, probably around mid 80s. I can't remember anything about rhe game or even who won, but I do remember that the crowd kepy cheering at really inappropriate moments during that match. We eventually realised a girl city supporter kept flashing her tits... even at a distance it was way better than tje football.

^ City were still 1-0 up at half time, the three points putting them up to 8th in the table.

The useless tossers scored an own goal and then conceded an injury time goal to lose 2-1, and slump to 14th in the table.

    Six places for 3 points.

^ I'm not sure who it is, to be honest.

I've never understood why Bristol can't raise at least one decent football team. It's a wealthy city, there's good support but City are always a huge disappointment and who would ever support the Gasheads?

    Well done City!

I thought the match was tonight, but I doubt it was on the telly anyway.

Nottingham Forest or Blackpool next... can't see too much trouble there.

Bloody fine effort by City, get those Eastenders out of the competition... Now, to get up the bloody league table and attempt to get 6th (I'm doubtful, but youse never knows).

& the Baggies now have a great game to look forward to against Wolves. I hope WBA win.

1-1 Probably a fair result overall. Looked like two decent mid-table teams.

    ^ no chance...

You won't even get a playoff place (although, I'd like to see you get there). It's so tough to get out of the Championship.

But, you did extremely well in the FA Cup, and were unlucky not to see the next round.

A fine win by Bristol City v Southampton. That's two good wins on the bounce - could this be the start of their top 6 push? Let's hope so...

I didn't even know they were playing yesterday, a fine supporter I am.

3-1 against a Premier team is a good result.

    11th in the league!
