I'm not sure whether I've mentioned it before, but we beat this lot 9-0.

Manchester City moved into the Champions League quarter-finals for a fourth successive season by completing a comprehensive aggregate victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Leading 2-0 after the first leg, the Premier League leaders extended their overall advantage after only 12 minutes of the last-16 second-leg tie through Kevin de Bruyne's excellent 20-yard left-footed strike.

Six minutes later, City scored again as Ilkay Gundogan slotted past goalkeeper Yann Sommer following a fine run and pass from Phil Foden, with the goal completing a 4-0 aggregate win.

Both matches in this tie were played at the Puskas Arena in Budapest because of coronavirus restrictions.

The draw for the quarter-finals is at 11:00 GMT on Friday.

For as long as Pep Guardiola has been in charge at Manchester City, one word has continually popped up within the media – Quadruple.

The winning of all three domestic trophies and the Champions League in one season, it is a word that the media have become obsessed with over the last few years. They clearly think winning all four trophies is certainly obtainable, but if you mention this to City fans, you will generally receive a non-plussed attitude. Why aren’t blues fans more excited by the prospect of domestic and European domination?

It’s fair to say that the older City fans remember very well the dark times that besieged the club from the late 70’s onwards. After Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison took City from the depths of Division Two to domestic and European glory, the blues fell on hard times. After winning the League Cup in 1976, all the blues had to show for their efforts until 2011 was a solitary appearance in the FA Cup Final in 1981, when they were defeated by Spurs in a replay.

Each season would be filled with hope, only to be replaced by despair. The 1980’s were particularly hard as City went through divisions and managers like it was going out of fashion. The 90’s weren’t much different and, although there was a general feeling that the blues would win something soon, Typical City would arrive, take that feeling and flush it right down the toilet and we’d be back to square one.

Coupled with United’s continued success and the dominance of the then ‘big four’ teams who were sharing trophies between them, chances of winning silverware again were rated at slim to none. It was only when ADUG arrived and invested in the club that City levelled the playing field with the boys at the top.

But as wonderful as that investment was, the faithful were cautious. They knew their club well and, while a few got a little carried away, the rest waited for Typical City to return. They had seen what expectation had done to their rival supporters. If United went 3-0 up, it was expected they would win a match comfortably and more often than not they did, but if the drew 3-3, the anger pouring out from their fans was incredible. It was even worse if they lost a match they would have been expected to win. It was almost like there was a given right to win matches just because of who they were, and football doesn’t work like that. You don’t deserve three points just for turning up!

Yet even today, when City go 3-0 up, there’s still a fear that it will end in a draw or even a defeat. That’s not being negative, that’s being City. During the 2019 FA Cup Final with City 6-0 up with a few minutes remaining we still couldn’t relax. When you’ve seen your team go 1-0 up in the last minute and still lose 2-1, you realise anything is possible with this club.

This is why City fans don’t talk about a quadruple, a treble or even winning a trophy until it actually happens. We’ve seen so much in the past that it clouds the future a little. For example, in the 1990/91 season, pundits were tipping City to win the FA Cup. Peter Reid had a decent side after taking over from Howard Kendall, and we’d already won at Burnley and Port Vale in the previous two rounds. Next up was a trip to lower league Notts County. With the draws being favourable for us, surely this was our season, but no, County beat us 1-0.

The 1994/95 season saw us beat Newcastle at St James’s Park in the League Cup. Newcastle at the time were one of the league’s top teams, yet little City won to set up a quarter-final with Palace. It was a great opportunity to get to the semi-final. Did we do it? No, Palace thrashed us 4-0 and a later FA Cup quarter final at Newcastle ended in a 3-1 defeat.

The 1996/97 League Cup campaigns ended before they even began, with defeats to Lincoln City and Blackpool, and in 2004, Arsenal came to the City of Manchester Stadium and won 2-1. That wasn’t unusual, however City played a full-strength side while the Gunners, as was the norm for them, played a team full of upcoming youngsters. And they still beat us! City then lost at Doncaster in 2005, Chesterfield in 2006 and Brighton in 2008.

This is obviously the nature of football, but can you imagine if that was United or Liverpool? United lost at Leicester yesterday and their fans were calling for OGS to be sacked. This is the same United that ended our winning streak. Liverpool, whose fans boldly claim the club are ‘European Royalty,’ were already celebrating winning the title in 2014 before the team threw it away, and think they have a given right not only to be playing in the Champions League but should be reaching the final every season.

If they were in the position we are in now, you wouldn’t expect the same level of humility that City fans show and the difference between their fans and ours is this:

They have never endured the pain that City fans have been through. They haven’t seen the things we have seen. They’ve never stood on Sencil Bank on a cold Tuesday night in October watching City lose 2-1 to Lincoln. They’ve not had a league double completed over them by Wycombe Wanderers. They didn’t get an early Christmas present of a 2-1 defeat by York City in December 1998. When was the last time either of those two teams entered the FA Cup at the first round?

In those days, if anyone said City would one day compete for a quadruple, it’d be like a scene from Back to the Future 3, when Doc Brown tries to explain about cars and how walking will be for pleasure and exercise. All the people in the bar just laughed, thinking he was hammered!

That mentality has stuck with City, despite the huge amount of success the faithful have seen over the last 13 years. It is that mentality that has kept the majority of blues fans grounded, and still expectant that City will somehow find a way to throw all their hard work away. It wasn’t long ago that someone said on Twitter that we’re mathematically safe from relegation!

So, if the media want to continue talk about quadruples season after season then let them do it. If rival fans want to laugh when we don’t achieve it, remember – we were already expecting not to accomplish it, and were laughing way before any opposing fans were. If other people want to be arrogant about their clubs, then feel free to be like that.

Arrogance is not the City way.

Will they win one, two, three… or all four? Manchester City are about to resume their bid for an unprecedented quadruple and one of the things on their side is that - unlike most other teams - they have been here before.

No club has ever landed the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup all in the same season, but this is City's fourth serious attempt at a clean sweep in the past seven years.

That experience of chasing multiple major trophies in the final few weeks of the season should help them this time, as much for what went wrong previously as what they got right - and one of the lessons learned should have been that slip-ups can happen anywhere.

Right now, on paper, a potential Champions League semi-final showdown with Bayern Munich or Paris St-Germain probably looks like the biggest obstacle to what would be the greatest achievement in English club football's 133-year history.

City should beware of banana skins, however. They have previously appeared in some unlikely places - Wigan (twice) and Tottenham were the teams who stopped their charge on four fronts in 2014, 2018 and 2019.

The best news for City is probably that they don't have to play Wigan again this time, but you can still see why Pep Guardiola, who was also in charge for both of those previous two campaigns, has been at pains recently to point out that his side have not won anything yet.

That in itself is an anomaly - the coronavirus pandemic is the only reason we are talking about a quadruple now, with City's trophy cabinet still not stocked up since the start of spring.

The Carabao Cup would usually be done and dusted already, of course, but this year's final was rescheduled from its traditional slot in February in the hope fans would be able to attend.

City will face Spurs - yes, them again - at Wembley at the end of this month instead, hoping to belatedly bag their first trophy.

Arriving at the start of April with your hopes alive in all four major competitions is no mean achievement, though, whatever the circumstances.

English teams have had the chance of a quadruple since the League Cup was established in 1960-61 but, from a total of 117 attempts from 15 different clubs over the past 60 years, there have only been four other occasions when teams have got this far, date-wise, before.

They were Chelsea in 2007, Manchester United in 2009 and City in 2019 and 2020, although last summer was a little different. Guardiola's side technically had hope until Liverpool wrapped up the Premier League title in late June once the season had resumed after the coronavirus outbreak halted it in March.

Chelsea's attempt, the best so far under any normal schedule, lasted until 1 May, and a defeat by Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals. Two years later, United fell to Everton with a penalty shootout defeat in the FA Cup semi-finals on 19 April.

That United team got to within three wins of all four major trophies, also losing to Barcelona in the Champions League final, and had to settle for 'only' two in the end.

When Burnley almost went the distance
Before the Premier League and Champions League era began in 1992, Burnley went closest, in 1960-61 - the very first season four trophies were up for grabs in England - when they got as far as 15 March before losing to Hamburg in the quarter-finals of the European Cup.

Back then, quadruple opportunities were far more limited - the European Cup was restricted to just the league champions or holders and, for eight out of 10 seasons between 1961 and 1971, the clubs who qualified did not enter the League Cup.

There was no chance of completing it between 1985 and 1991 either, as English clubs were barred from Europe for five years, and league champions Liverpool served an extra year's suspension in 1990-91.

Burnley were the first team to try to win the quadruple
Burnley, shown here with their trophy after winning the 1960 league title, were the first team to try to win the quadruple in 1960-61, and no other side got closer for 46 years
Some teams still had several early chances, though - notably the Liverpool side of the late 1970s and early 1980s, who had nine successive seasons in the European Cup between 1976-77 and 1984-85.

Their best effort at a clean sweep saw them complete a treble of the league title, European Cup and League Cup in 1983-84, but they went out of the FA Cup to second-tier Brighton on 29 January.

Out of a total of 23 attempts - the joint-most with Manchester United, who were denied a try in 1999-2000 when they did not take part in the FA Cup - the furthest the Merseysiders have come in terms of the date their quadruple bid ended was 1982-83, when they got as far as 20 February.

Other great teams of the modern era also fell short. United's famous Treble of 1998-99 included the FA Cup, not League Cup - they went out of that competition to Tottenham in the quarter-finals, on 2 December.

Arsenal's legendary 'Invincibles' went the entire league campaign undefeated in 2003-04, but that was the only silverware they secured that season and their quadruple hopes were ended on 3 February by Middlesbrough, who beat them 3-1 on aggregate in the League Cup semi-finals.

Manchester United's Treble-winning side celebrate their Champions League triumph in 1998-99
Three English teams - Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City - have done different trebles that involve winning the league title - but United's capture of the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 1999 is widely regarded as the greatest yet
City's own 'Centurions' - the Guardiola side that broke the 100-point mark and set an all-time English top-flight record for most points in a single campaign in 2017-18 - had their bid ended by Wigan Athletic, of League One, in the FA Cup on 19 February.

    Highlights: Wigan 1-0 Man City
A year later, in 2019, City became the first English men's team to do a domestic treble, but lost to Spurs in Europe on 17 April - date-wise, in a regular season, the third-best effort yet.

There have also been teams that ended up completely empty-handed - a fate that could still befall City this year, however unlikely it seems.

The Chelsea side of 2007-08 are probably the best example of that. They finished runners-up in the league by two points, lost in the final of the Champions League and League Cup, and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the sixth round.

What City need to do - and what's different this time?
Snapshot of the top of the Premier League: 1st Man City, 2nd Man Utd, 3rd Leicester, 4th Chelsea, 5th West Ham & 6th Tottenham
Five more wins from their final nine games will give Manchester City their third Premier League title in the past four years, regardless of what their rivals do
Realistically, no-one is still wondering whether City will win anything this season - the only question is how many trophies they will collect.

When they last got to April with their hopes of the quadruple alive, in 2019, their midfielder Kevin de Bruyne described winning all four as "nearly impossible".

But that was because City were in the midst of a title tussle with Liverpool that went to the final day and was mentally and physically draining every week - they had to win their last 14 league games of the season to hold off the Reds.

This time, Guardiola's side have breathing space at the top of the Premier League, thanks to a run of 17 wins from 18 league games. In that respect, some of the pressure is off.

While City have been relentless, their rivals have continued to drop points. If United or Leicester merely maintain their current points-per-game ratio, the most they will gather is 75 points - so two wins would deliver the title to City, not five.

Everyone wrote us off, now we're at the top - Foden
The knockout cup competitions, by definition, will be far more difficult to negotiate. City are the bookmakers' favourites to win each one, including in Europe but, as Guardiola will surely remind his players, that has hardly helped them there much in the past.

Despite his two previous successes with Barcelona, Guardiola has a personal point to prove in the Champions League too - he has never gone beyond the quarter-finals in four attempts with City, has not won it since 2011, and one of the few ways to criticise his stellar managerial career is that he has not got his hands on that particular trophy without having Lionel Messi in his team to help.

This year seems a particularly good opportunity to put all of that right but Guardiola's mantra is to take one game at a time, so he will not be contemplating this year's final - in Istanbul on 29 May - for a little while yet.

Phil Foden's last-gasp strike gave Manchester City a crucial slender advantage in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Borussia Dortmund at Etihad Stadium.

City's hopes of reaching the semi-final looked to be in the balance when Marco Reus gave Dortmund what looked like a priceless away goal with a cool finish from Erling Haaland's pass six minutes from time.

Kevin de Bruyne, who had given City the lead with a crisp finish after 19 minutes, played his part once more in the final minute of normal time when his fine cross was touched back by Ilkay Gundogan for Foden to stroke a finish past Marwin Hitz.

It was a bitter blow for an enterprising Dortmund side, who will leave Manchester nursing a burning sense of injustice directed towards Romanian official Ovidiu Hategan after he controversially ruled out Jude Bellingham's second-half goal with City leading 1-0.

Bellingham beat Ederson to a throughball but after it appeared City's keeper kicked the teenager, the referee blew for a foul against Borussia with the England star racing towards an empty net - not even allowing the intervention of VAR which would have surely awarded a goal.

City, who had a first-half penalty award overturned by VAR, showed commendable strength of character and great determination to react to the blow of Reus' goal to score the winner and are now in pole position before the return leg in Germany.

Haaland and Foden embraced in conversation at the final whistle
The Champions League has not been kind to Manchester City in the past and it looked, for five minutes at least, like they would be facing yet another uphill task in Germany after Reus equalised for Dortmund.

City may have been thinking their difficulties in Europe's elite competition had returned, but they deserve huge credit for mounting what effectively had to be an instant response to claw back the advantage.

This tie is not over by any means, not with Haaland such a massive threat even though he was relatively quiet here, but make no mistake the picture looked a lot healthier for City at the final whistle than it did when Dortmund's players celebrated wildly in an empty corner of the Etihad in the 84th minute.

And credit, too, to match-winner Foden as he kept getting into scoring positions despite squandering a couple of opportunities when he saw a shot saved by Hitz, then shot across the face of goal when he should have hit the target.

The joyous scenes on the pitch and among City's support staff and substitutes in the stands showed how much this goal meant. Guardiola's side would still have felt confident at 1-1 but now they have a precious lead to protect.

De Bruyne once again exerted his massive influence and he will be a figure of huge significance in the return as Guardiola finally tries to guide City into a Champions League semi-final.

    Dortmund still have hope
Borussia Dortmund's players slumped to the turf in anguish as Foden's late low finish slipped beyond keeper Hitz into the far corner.

Once the disappointment has eased - and anger as well, as they will justifiably feel they got the rough end of a very poor decision - the Bundesliga side will still feel they are very much in this Champions League quarter-final.

They may have been struggling for form in recent weeks but they can be highly satisfied with this performance, especially as they still have a genuine game-changer in Haaland.

The much-coveted 20-year-old may not have been a constant threat but he showed in flashes why he is currently the most talked-about young player in the game.

Haaland set up a first-half chance for Bellingham, showed explosive pace and power to get ahead of Ruben Dias to bring a vital save from Ederson after the break then showed great touch to set up Reus' goal.

Where there is Haaland there is hope for Borussia Dortmund - and Manchester City will be well aware of that.

    Nice one Nev, good news.
Also Haaland is reported to be wanting double DeBruynes wages.

Apparently City have declined so as not to create animosity with the other players.

Why is Sergio Aguero leaving, Joe? I read a report in the press today saying Chelsea are interested in signing him. Why would he go to Chelsea and not stay at City?

Pep doesn!t want Aguero to be re-signed.

    He's barely played this season.

You're familiar with how many rumours will be circulating for the next five months or so, no?

He probably wants to win at least one Champion's League before retiring.

As likely now as nev getting an answer out of Joe90 involving something other than the dancing banana and a c+p.

It'll be either the sandpit or MLS next.

Peps got a wealth of talented strikers and many more coming up through the academy.

Agueros distinguished career is unfortunately coming to an end after a record breaking decade at City.

The bronze statue has been commissioned and signed shirts are going on Ebay for 300 quid + plus.

Incidentally I've been looking at buying one to put up in my new mancave which I've been working on instead of on here ciz.
