Manchester City took a potentially decisive hold on the Premier League title race as they thrashed Liverpool at Anfield - helped by a virtuoso performance by Phil Foden and a nightmare display from the champions' goalkeeper Alisson.

City's comprehensive triumph, their first at Anfield since 2003 and Pep Guardiola's first away to Liverpool as a manager, was achieved in such comfort that they were able to recover from Ilkay Gundogan's first-half penalty miss.

Gundogan, who skied his spot-kick after Fabinho fouled Raheem Sterling, made amends when he put City ahead four minutes into the second period, after Alisson could only push out Foden's shot.

Mohamed Salah equalised for Liverpool from the spot just after the hour after he was hauled back by Ruben Dias - but then came the combination of Alisson's errors and Foden's genius as the hosts were run ragged.

Alisson was punished for two poor clearances as Foden set up Gundogan to put City back in front after 73 minutes, then three minutes later the Brazil keeper inexplicably sent a pass straight to Bernardo Silva, whose clever cross was headed in almost on the goalline by Sterling.

City saved the best until last when Foden, the game's outstanding performer, thundered a magnificent finish high past the beleaguered Alisson seven minutes from time.

The emphatic victory leaves City five points ahead of second-placed Manchester United, having played a game less - and 10 points ahead of Liverpool with a match in hand.

'Too soon to talk of crisis, but champions on worrying slide'
Foden a 'huge talent' but can 'still improve' - Guardiola
Reaction from Man City's win at Liverpool, plus the rest of Sunday's Premier League matches
Payback time for Guardiola and Man City
Manchester City and Guardiola have had some miserable days and nights at Anfield since Jurgen Klopp became Liverpool manager - this was the game, the performance and the scoreline that made this almost the perfect day.

Guardiola's incendiary reaction to Gundogan's first-half penalty miss demonstrated how much he wanted to win this game and perhaps how he feared history repeating itself. But his frustration was short-lived as City produced a second-half masterclass that left the champions badly beaten.

And while the Reds will point to their collection of injuries as a reason for their fall from grace, it should also be pointed out that City were missing the brilliance of midfielder Kevin de Bruyne and the predatory instincts of striker Sergio Aguero.

It was only a rare error from Dias that gave Liverpool hope - although Sadio Mane headed over in the first half and Ederson saved well from Roberto Firmino - and once Gudogan restored City's advantage there was only one winner here.

Liverpool performance was good enough to draw - Klopp
At the heart of it all was the brilliant Foden, head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch and flourishing even more when Guardiola cleverly removed Riyad Mahrez and placed the 20-year-old England international on the right flank.

He made two goals and scored a sensational fourth as City put down a marker and confirmed their status as the team to beat in the title race. It was also a 14th straight win, which equals the all-time winning run by an English top-flight team, shared with Preston in 1892 and Arsenal in 1987.

City have been growing in stature in recent weeks, imperious in defence and threatening in attack - but this ruthless dismissal of an opponent that has haunted them at Anfield in the recent past is their most powerful statement of intent yet.

    Shalom

As I previously posted I believe Citee have secured the premiership title already even at this early stage.

I follow the football without having any preferred side but do note the brilliant form that Citee have been in of late.

Chitty do you put it down to the fact that Pepe is a supreme coach or he has been able to purchase the best available players?

It seems that they struggled early in the season, particularly when their best players were injured and Pepe couldn't do much about it. Last year was also a good example.

I'm not trying to take away any glory but it does seem their success is cheque book driven.

    Thanks for the interest LT.
To answer your questions comprehensively I will have to take you on a trip down memory lane to 20+ years ago when City won the play offs against Gillingham in 1999 and won promotion from the old second division with two late goal and a penalty shoot out.
My ears still ring from that historic Wembley day.

City nearly went bankrupt with more professional footballers on their books than any other club, testament to their club ethics of community first.
Maintaining capacity crowds at Maine Riad they continued to grow although they had some dark days never too be forgotten, the buzz has and always will be there.

The major turning point was when the former Thai prime minister Thaksin bought the club and invested heavily in the deprived Eastlands area of Manchester building a new stadium and academy.
He saw the potential of their huge local support.
A combination of great managers building a great squad, Mancini etc and now the Tactical genius of football Pep with some fantastic signings helped them grow into the consistently best football team in the premier league for the last decade. City continue to break records and this season I feel the elusive quadruple will become a reality.
Some critics might say it's all down to money, but others have spent more with less success.
The current City team and manager have transformed English football and will continue to do so for the foreseeable.
They are exciting to watch and fourmidable .
Naturally with success comes envoy from our noisy neighbours and the Scousers, but that's their problem.
Even without Kevin De Bruyne we dominated and hammered Liverpool today at Anfield.

The future is bright and the Blue Moon has risen

^^ Thanks for your detailed response Chitty.

I also note that Wenger purchased some great players and made Arsenal a formidable, almost unbeatable team back in the day.

Fergie also done the same with Manu but also nurtured the young local talent such as Beckham and the Neville brothers.

How do you think this Citee side would compete against these two sides when they were at their prime?

It's a different style of play nowadays, the hasbeens have been slow on the uptake

Owen is the worst gambler ever.

Remember those cheques he had to write out to his teammates everytime they played cards?

They could see him coming a mile off.

Manchester City extended their winning run to 20 matches and moved 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League as John Stones' second-half strike was enough to secure victory over a resilient West Ham United.

Stones fired home his fourth goal of the season from Riyad Mahrez's neat lay-off to keep Pep Guardiola's side in control of the title race.

Fourth-placed West Ham gave City a decent game at Etihad Stadium and fought back to level through Michail Antonio before the break, after Stones' central-defensive partner Ruben Dias had put the hosts in front.

But Guardiola, likened to celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal by Hammers counterpart David Moyes before Saturday's fixture, once again came up with the right ingredients as his side improved following the second-half introductions of Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden.

City's unbeaten record now stretches to 27 games and they will equal their longest run without defeat if they do not lose against Wolves on Tuesday.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will come up against each other on Sunday with a gulf in the Premier League table between them.
There are superstars on both sides of the divide - but who would you pick in a combined Manchester derby team?

Now you can make your choice. Select a formation and an XI and then share with your friends.
    Who's in?
    Manchester derby XI

If Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer morphed, who would make the joint Manchester City and Manchester United XI? You can decide!

I've picked my starting 11 and formation, you pick yours from the BBC link below

Playing Martial up front on his own has its benefits.

Now you've had your consolation penalty, it's time for the onslaught and City to bang in 7
