That must hurt. Well not the kick, he had a headguard on.

Great Britain's Lutalo Muhammad suffered an agonising last-second defeat in the men's -80kg taekwondo final - losing 8-6 to Cheick Sallah Cisse of the Ivory Coast.

World number four Muhammad, 25, led 6-4 but was hit by a reverse turning kick with the last action of the final.

Britain were disqualified from the Mens 4x400 for some obscure line infringement that didn't appear to make any difference.

But then I read that the US women dropped the baton in the ladies 4 x 100 but were allowed to rerun on their own to set a time.

And then it turns out Britain's qualification coincidentally lets Brazil into the final through the back door.

    What a fucking shambles.

The re-run that involved the US team should also have involved the Chinese team. Why were the Americans allowed to run again knowing a time (of the Chinese team) that they had to beat to get into the final? The Chinese (who were the team that finished eighth in the semi-final and were eventually eliminated as a result of the US second effort) should have been given the right to run against the US team in the re-run.

It appears that the people who make the decisions in these events don't have much sense of the appearance of fair play and justice.

The women getting Bronze in the 4x100 brings the medal tally to 66, better than 2012.

    Well done Team GB!

Excellent team effort from the Danes to unseat winner of the last two golds France in the Handball final.

First Danish gold in the sport as well.

Joyce away in the boxing, also against a Frenchman.

Joyce looking the handier in the first round.

(But not on the judges scorecard!).

2nd round: Again two judges give it to the Frenchman.

In fairness he's scoring more even though he's throwing less.

Joyce finished well, but he didn't do enough in the first two to catch the judges eye.

Lost it on a split decision.

The Turkish judge had the Frenchman winning all three rounds.

    That's just bollocks really.

    The last medal awarded -

Nikki Hamblin, Abbey D’Agostino awarded rare Olympic medal
    AUGUST 22, 20161:50PM

NEW Zealand 5000m runner Nikki Hamblin and American Abbey D’Agostino have been awarded a special Olympic medal for sportsmanship.

They have been awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal, which has only been awarded previously 17 times in Olympic history.

Hamblin tripped and fell during the semi-final race and brought D’Agostino crashing down behind her.

D’Agostino was quickly up on her feet, but then stopped and helped Hamblin up and encouraged her to run with her. But the American then realised she had injured her knee — in fact she had torn her anterior cruciate ligament — and urged Hamblin to race on. But the Kiwi refused to leave her side and they completed the race together.

An International Olympic Committee statement read: “The D’Agostino and Hamblin story is one of humanity and sacrifice which has already captured the hearts of people across the globe.”

Hamblin said: “Winning this award is overwhelming. I am proud that what we did and truly believe that you can be both a competitor and kind and responsive at the same time.

“Everyone comes here to compete but there are a lot of people who don’t achieve that and the journey is really important too.

“That was one of those journeys and it has gone on to be one of the most important moments of my life.”

Chloe Esposito wins gold for Australia in women's modern pentathlon

Chloe Esposito stormed through the closing running-shooting combined contest to win the women's modern pentathlon gold at the Rio Olympics, giving Australia its first medal in the five-discipline event.
Esposito was seventh going into the final stage of competition, which combines a 3,200m run with pistol shooting.

She started 45 seconds behind Poland's top-ranked Oktawia Nowacka, but missed just one target in the four lots of five shots as she worked her way to the top of the field.
Her final combined time of 12min, 10.19sec took her points total to an Olympic record of 1,372 and the gold.
Elodie Clouvel of France won silver with 1,356 points and bronze went to Nowacka with 1,349.
"I know combined is my strongest event but I just didn't want to think about getting a medal, [thinking] 'I've gotta do this, I've gotta do that'," she said.
Esposito, coached by her former Olympian father Daniel, who represented Australia in modern pentathlon at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and was selected for the 1988 Games but missed the trip to Seoul through injury.
She was also cheered on by her brother, Max, who competes in the men's modern pentathlon.
Sixth after swimming and fencing, she produced a solid ride in the penultimate show jumping, with two obstacle penalties and two time penalties.
She benefitted when 2012 gold medallist Laura Asadauskaite and 2008 Beijing champion Lena Schoneborn of Germany were ruled out of medal contention when their horses refused four jumps.
"I still can't believe it. First person ever in Australia to win a medal in pentathlon, and I can't describe it," Esposito said.

This woman is very stupid. What is hard to describe here ? I appreciate that it is unusual for Australians to win anything but surely the Australian education system must enable its people to string a few coherent words together ?

Perhaps if one of your movie reviews won an award, you would experience the same mixture of elation and shock.

Well the answer is clear... In order to improve your showing at the next Olympics you're going to have to push a whole bunch of people into the Pacific Ocean.

Just hopefully not the sporty ones.

Huge hat tip to Bobo. His contributions to this thread have been exemplary. Great pics, informative and sprinkled with pathos and humour.
If only mainstream coverage was this good. Thank you.
