Well, not exactly.... but neither was it my intention to invite discussion. I had a different agenda. Don't ask, it's not important.

I mean, if you want to discuss, knock yourselves out. The highlights are perhaps Phil Linz, because of the infamous harmonica incident, and Motjeka Madisha, because of the particularly horrific nature of his death. Otherwise, I really don't know why any of these old dead guys should be any more interesting than any other.

Edit: Except Jimmy Collins. He was the winningest.

    Tommy Docherty – 1928–2020

    The RIP Sporting Heroes Thread-tommy-docherty-web-2-jpg

    Thursday 31 December 2020
Everyone at the Scottish FA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Scotland manager Tommy Docherty.

Throughout his football career and life, Tommy had a profound impact on the game. He played with distinction for Shettleston Juniors, Celtic, Preston North End, Arsenal and Chelsea and earned 25 international caps for Scotland, including two World Cups in 1954 and 1958.

Tommy went on to become a successful Scotland manager during an extensive coaching career, winning seven of 12 matches in charge between 1971-72 before joining Manchester United, with whom he won the FA Cup and Second Division title during five years in charge.

He was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

Rod Petrie, Scottish FA President: “Football has lost a tremendous personality in Tommy Docherty. He was tenacious on the park and a great leader off it.

“Tommy was a regular in the Scotland side in the 1950s that qualified for two World Cups, and his record as Scotland manager was impressive, albeit cut short by his decision to take the Manchester United job.

“He was on record as saying that the biggest regret of his career was leaving his Scotland managerial role and looking at the results and performances he inspired, it is hard not to wonder what might have been had he remained.

“His charisma and love for the game shone even after he stopped managing and it was entirely fitting that Tommy should be inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame for his lifelong service. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Hall of Fame Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda dies at 93

Hall of Fame Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda dies at 93

LOS ANGELES -- Tommy Lasorda, the fiery Hall of Fame manager who guided the Los Angeles Dodgers to two World Series titles and later became an ambassador for the sport he loved during his 71 years with the franchise, has died. He was 93.
The Dodgers said Friday that he suffered heart failure at his home in Fullerton, California. Resuscitation attempts were made on the way to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday.
Lasorda had a history of heart problems, including a heart attack in 1996 that ended his managerial career and another in 2012 that required him to have a pacemaker.
He had just returned home Tuesday after being hospitalized since Nov. 8 with heart issues.

Don Sutton, Hall of Fame Dodgers pitcher, dead from cancer at 75

Don Sutton, Hall of Fame Dodgers pitcher, dead from cancer at 75

LOS ANGELES — Don Sutton, a Hall of Fame pitcher who was a stalwart of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation spanning an era from Sandy Koufax to Fernando Valenzuela, died Tuesday. He was 75.

The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, said Sutton died at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif., after a long struggle with cancer. The Braves, for whom Sutton was a long-time broadcaster, said he died in his sleep.
A four-time All-Star, Sutton had a career record of 324-256 and an ERA of 3.26 while pitching for the Dodgers, Astros, Brewers, Athletics, Angels and the Dodgers again in 1988, his final season.
The durable Sutton never missed a turn in the rotation in 756 big league starts. Only Cy Young and Nolan Ryan made more starts than Sutton, who never landed on the injured list in his 23-year career.
A master of changing speeds and pitch location, Sutton recorded just one 20-win season, but earned 10 or more wins in every season except 1983 and 1988. Of his victories, 58 were shutouts, five were one-hitters and 10 were two-hitters. The right-hander is seventh on the career strikeout list with 3,574.
Sutton ranks third all time in games started and seventh in innings pitched (5,282.1). He worked at least 200 innings in 20 of his first 21 seasons, with only the shortened 1981 season interrupting his streak.

    There's your third Rounders player.

Hank Aaron, Hall of Famer and MLB legend, dies at 86

One of the all-time greats to ever play the game, Aaron’s 755 homers were the MLB career record for three decades before finally being surpassed. He’s still the all-time leader in RBI (2,297) and total bases (6,856), and ranks third in hits (3,771) and plate appearances (13,941) and fourth in runs scored (2,174). His career numbers over 23 seasons, in one of the largest bodies of work ever assembled, are still staggering.

Hannu Mikkola, the 1983 world champion and one of Finland’s great rally names has died. He was 78.

    The RIP Sporting Heroes Thread-270221_les-hannumikkola-obit-2021_002-1-_3dcaa_f_1400x788

After making his name driving a series of Ford Escorts, Mikkola was at the forefront of the four-wheel drive revolution in world rallying and claimed the title in an Audi Quattro – the first for an all-wheel drive car in FIA World Rally Championship history.

He won Finland’s WRC counter, the 1000 Lakes Rally, on seven occasions and remains tied at the top of the event’s honours list with fellow countryman Marcus Grönholm.

Mikkola was born in May 1942 and started his career on home country rallies in a series of Volvo cars. He scored his first win at the Pohjala Ralli in 1966 and took his first 1000 Lakes success two years later in an Escort Twin Cam.

In 1970 Mikkola and Gunnar Palm scored a famous victory in the London to Mexico World Cup Rally and two years afterwards the pair became the first overseas winners of the East African Safari Rally. His first WRC victory was achieved on home territory in 1974.

He drove with a series of different manufacturers during the mid-1970s but it was at Ford that he made his name in the WRC. Partnered by Arne Hertz, he helped the Blue Oval win the manufacturers’ title in 1979, but missed out on the drivers’ crown by just one point.

A move to Audi transformed Mikkola’s career. He piloted a Quattro to two WRC wins in both 1981 and 1982 before clinching the drivers’ world title the following season with four victories in a Group B Quattro A2.

Mikkola achieved his final world rally win in Kenya in 1987, after which he moved to Mazda before departing the WRC on a full-time basis in 1991. He made 123 WRC starts and continued to compete as a guest driver at a variety of events until 2017.

The WRC sends its sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks dies at 67

    The RIP Sporting Heroes Thread-1879-jpg

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Leon Spinks, who won Olympic gold and then shocked the boxing world by beating Muhammad Ali to win the heavyweight title in only his eighth pro fight, has died. He was 67.
Spinks, who lived his later years in Las Vegas, died Friday night, according to a release from a public relations firm. He had been battling prostate and other cancers.
His wife, Brenda Glur Spinks, and a few close friends and other family members were by his side when he passed away.
A lovable heavyweight with a drinking problem, Spinks beat Ali by decision in a 15-round fight in 1978 to win the title. He was unranked at the time, and picked as an opponent because Ali was looking for an easy fight.
He got anything but that, with an unorthodox Spinks swarming over Ali throughout the fight on his way to a stunning win by split decision. The two met seven months later at the Superdome in New Orleans, with Ali taking the decision this time before a record indoor boxing crowd of 72,000 and a national television audience estimated at 90 million people.
“It was one of the most unbelievable things when Ali agreed to fight him because you look at the fights he had up to then and he was not only not a top contender but shouldn’t have been a contender at all,’’ promoter Bob Arum said Saturday. ”He was just an opponent but somehow he found a way to win that fight."
Spinks would lose the rematch to Ali in New Orleans and fought for the title only once after that, when he was stopped in the third round in 1981 by Larry Holmes. He continued fighting on and off into the mid-1990s, finishing with a record of 26-17-3.
Spinks, with a big grin that often showed off his missing front teeth, was popular among boxing fans for both his win over Ali and his easygoing personality. But he burned through his earnings quickly, and at one point after retiring was working as a custodian at a YMCA in Nebraska, cleaning locker rooms.

Blurry videos don't really do it justice, but that boy could hit the old solid balls harder than a lot of modern ones can hit those balloons they use nowadays.

Leeds legend Peter Lorimer dies, aged 74

Leeds’ record goalscorer Peter Lorimer has died at the age of 74 after a lengthy illness.

The attacking midfielder, having become the youngest player to represent United at the age of 15 years and 289 days, netted 238 goals in 705 appearances during two spells at Elland Road.

His death was announced in a statement on the club’s official website, which read: “It is with great sadness, Leeds United has learned of the passing of club legend Peter Lorimer this morning at the age of 74 following a long-term illness.

“Peter made a huge 705 appearances for the Whites over two spells and is the club’s record goal-scorer, having netted 238 times in all competitions.”

Lorimer was an integral member of the Leeds side that Don Revie transformed from an ordinary Second Division outfit into one of the most feared teams in Europe during the 1960s and 70s.

Blessed with a shot renowned as one of the most powerful in the game at the time, he helped the club claim seven trophies, including two league titles and the FA Cup, during his first spell at Elland Road between 1962 and 1979.
