Any possibility all 3 teams moving? That would be amazing bc they all have called L.A. home before. The fan bases are already there or will come with the teams. For example, the Chargers are freeway close right now. And L.A. is so huge, 3 teams should still be able to fill both new stadiums.

I assume LA will get one team.

    Definitely a market there.

I don't know what other cities, if any other cities are lobbying for an NFL team now and if it's feasible in another city.

As for the NBA (sorry off-topic) when the Sonics left Seattle in 2008 Seattle retained the name and property has been bought for a new arena near Safeco field and the Clink.

Seattle will get an NBA team again within 7 years, IMO, and probably sooner.

Seems Rex Ryan has hired his brother Rob to be his new defensive coordinator at Buffalo.

I think L.A. will get two teams and I read where the one that's left out will still move: either to one of the homes the other two left or to a new/different city.

I definitely understand how excited you must be after they won a game they should have lost.

They were behind 9 zip until they finally scored in the 4th qtr. The Vikings lost because their kicker couldn't hit a 27 yard field goal, which is even closer than extra points which are 33 yards, with 22 seconds left in the game: granted that, apparently, there was a frigid wind blowing but it wasn't obvious on my 62" tv screen. But the good snap and placement and that no Seahawks came close to blocking or touching the ball, was plenty obvious. And the same Viking kicker had made scored all the points the Vikings had with the 3 earlier fgs.

The logical scenario should have been that the Vikings made the field goal, the score was now 12-10 with the Vikings ahead. And Russell Wilson would have had about 20 seconds to drive the team to within field goal range. Not impossible and had the final score been 13-12, I'd be right with you: i.e., How about those SeaHAWKS!

But back to reality: the CBS camera lingered on Richard Sherman for, like, a full minute after the missed fg. it seemed, as he was down on one knee with his head on his knee, praying to God, I guess, or just wanting to give the impression that he was. But, at least he definitely realized how lucky the Seahawks were to win that game. The Vikings should have won it. You have to give the Seahawk's defense credit for holding the Vikes to just those 3 fgs, though. Credit is also due to the 'hawks as they didn't have Marshawn Lynch in the Viking game and he prolly will be available for next week's game which gives the Seahawks a big scary advantage against the Panthers. Also, revenge could be an little extra motivation for the 'hawks as they blew a late lead at home against Carolina way back in Week 6. Whether or not that's a bigger advantage than what the Panthers have (home field, rest, time for injuries to heal) is a completely different question. Here's the only betting info I could find and since I've never bet on a single game in any sport, I have no idea how to read it. Maybe you can. There's no point spread available yet on ESPN. That's what I'm waiting for. Anyway, here's the early betting info:

    Odds courtesy of Pinnacle Sports.

    Spread: Carolina (-2.5)

    Over/Under: 43.5

    Moneyline: Seattle (+127), Carolina (-140)

Back to the topic of the Seahawks. Although they've played in the last 2 Super Bowls, they had a higher seed and have a much harder row to hoe this year: no bye week, playing all their games away to higher seeded teams. And now they have the undeniable pleasure of playing the #1 seeded Panthers. And, after having had to play in frigid conditions at 10 AM West Coast time against the Vikes, it's the same time as the Panther game will be. I hate to think what their jet lag/fatigue will be like at game time.

If they do go all the way, they would have played in the last 3 Super Bowls (counting this one).

    Good Luck!

Here's a good analysis of the Viking missed field goal: according to it, it involved 3: the center, the holder, and the place kicker. We know this, but good details.

EXPLAINING THE BLAIR WALSH MISSED FIELD GOAL

    CHUCK ZODDA — JANUARY 10, 2016

The NFC Wild Card matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings came down to a last-second kick by Blair Walsh of the Vikings. With 26 seconds left on the clock, Walsh was called in to make a 27-yard field goal from the left hash. When he missed, the Internet simultaneously lost its mind and we saw a plethora of kicking experts reveal themselves on Twitter despite having never kicked a football in any conditions. Chuck Zodda breaks down why Walsh missed the kick.

Blair Walsh takes a standard three-steps-back, two-steps-over setup that is common for most NFL kickers:Walsh-Miss-1

The pre-kick alignment is done with the center upright as the target, meaning that regardless of where the kick is coming from on the field, it is always lined up to the center of the target. This means that Walsh does not need to adjust his steps or try to curve the ball in any way. He simply angles his approach, and then takes the same swing he always does, trying to drive the ball straight through the uprights.

The snap on a field goal or extra point is 7 yards, and should be at the left shoulder of the holder for a right-footed kicker. Almost as important, the goal of a long snapper is to match up the rotational speed to the speed of the snap in such a way that the holder typically does not have to do much work spinning the ball to have the laces facing out. While the primary responsibility is to get the ball to the holder, NFL snappers need to be able to adjust the number of rotations on the ball to account for different grip conditions.

Long snapper Kevin McDermott (#47) fires the ball back to holder Jeff Locke (#18):Walsh-Miss-2

Walsh takes a jab step with his left foot, as is common for many kickers in today’s NFL. The snap is right on the money, directly at the left shoulder of Locke. However, the laces are facing directly down instead of straight up, meaning Locke needs to spin the ball 180 degrees to face them away from Walsh. If Locke cannot complete a full turn, he risks having the laces at an angle and creating an uneven contact point for Walsh. With Locke wearing gloves because of the extreme cold, he opts to place the ball as it is, rather than attempting a spin with an unfamiliar grip.

While striking the laces directly may cause some variation with the flight of the ball, it is more likely to result in a loss of distance due to the maximum compression not being applied directly to the football than side-to-side action. Off-center laces may cause a hook or slice, but a direct impact does not usually result in significant movement in these ways.

It is important to note that McDermott and Locke had struggled with these issues throughout the game, and had likely discussed the situation with Walsh. These decisions do not happen in a vacuum, and the entire battery was likely aware this was the course of action in the event of a snap without the proper rotation. Kickers and holders enjoy a unique relationship, in that the kicker is incredibly dependent on the holder to complete his job. A holder is not going to change tactics without discussing it first with his kicker, as the goal is to have as few surprises as possible during the 1.2 seconds from snap to kick.

Here is the close-up view as Walsh approaches the ball:Walsh-Close-Up-1

Locke has the ball down with the laces facing back. Many people have suggested that this was a poor hold because of the fact it was angled toward Locke. However, most kickers prefer a ball tilted slightly away from them as they kick, as it creates a rounder and smoother surface for them to strike, as well as correcting for the tendency of a ball placed straight down to hook. The angle used here is appropriate and typical for an NFL kicker, and in no way caused any of the problems on this kick.

However, there is a critical error as Walsh makes his plant:Walsh-Miss-3

Walsh plants only 3-4 inches from the ball as opposed to his standard 6-8. This is more clearly seen in the close-up view:Walsh-Close-Up-2

There is barely any daylight between Walsh’s foot and the ball. Compare this to Walsh’s typical plant from two kicks earlier in the season:Walsh-Typical-Plant-1

    Walsh-Typical-Plant-2

In both of these kicks, there is significantly more distance between Walsh’s plant foot and the ball.

    Why is this important?

The leg swing on a field goal or extra point is similar to a golf swing in that a kicker is trying to take rotational force and impart it directly through the ball. This requires creating a stable swing plane that comes at an angle to the ball but that is moving directly through the target at impact. If a kicker is too far from a ball, he will spin off the ball and hit a ball with a weak, slicing flight, just like a golfer swinging from the outside-in. Likewise, if a kicker is too close to the ball, his leg will not have adequate distance to swing, and he will whip around the outside of the ball, hitting a low, hooking shot.

This is part of what happens here. Walsh does not have sufficient clearance for his foot to move directly through the ball. While a kicker typically tries to make contact with the hard bone on top of his foot, Walsh instead makes contact closer to his ankle:Walsh-Close-Up-3

Remember that the laces were dead-center when Locke placed the ball. Walsh is now making contact with nearly the top of his cleat as his foot wraps around this ball. In this part of the foot, there are a number of uneven surfaces – the cleat line, ankle bone, and tongue of the shoe all come to mind as potential contact points here. Any one of these surfaces interacting with the laces could have caused the trajectory we witnessed, and it is likely the interaction of this and the laces back that were the reasons for the miss.

In short, three things went wrong on this kick: A snap that did not have the correct number of rotations on it, a holder who did not spin the laces away from the kicker, and a plant step that was too close to the ball to allow Walsh’s natural technique to occur. Walsh likely made his earlier kicks because all three did not occur at once on any of those kicks – while he did see laces earlier in the day, his plant step was generally wider and more stable. If any one of these does not occur here, the Vikings are likely on to the Divisional Round. But the convergence of all three of these, likely because of the frigid conditions, caused the kick to quickly veer left of the uprights as the Vikings fell to the Seahawks.

OK, the Rams are heading back to Los Angeles, and the Chargers have the option to relocate their. New stadium in 2019 that may cost up to $3 Billion.

NFL will return to Los Angeles for 2016 season

Sam Farmer and Nathan FennoContact Reporters

A 21-year odyssey came to an end Tuesday when National Football League owners voted to allow the St. Louis Rams to move to Los Angeles for the 2016 season and gave the San Diego Chargers an option to join the Rams in Inglewood.

Their home will ultimately be on the site of the old Hollywood Park racetrack in Inglewood in what will be the league’s biggest stadium, a low-slung, glass-roofed football palace with a projected opening in 2019 and a price tag that could approach $3 billion.

At an unremarkable suburban hotel, NFL owners found a way to return professional football to Los Angeles, something a succession of billionaires, political heavyweights and Hollywood power brokers couldn’t do for decades.

See the most-popular stories in Sports this hour>>

The historic vote was 30-2 in favor of the Rams and possibly Chargers sharing the Inglewood Stadium. The Chargers have a year to decide if they want to move to the L.A. area. The league also gave the Chargers an additional $100 million to help find a solution in San Diego.

I think it's good the Rams are returning to Los Angeles.

The played in LA since 1946 to the mid-90s. 50 years or so.

The Rams were always the "LA Rams" to me. I rooted for them in the Superbowl when Vince Ferragamo was quarterback. I remember Deacon Jones and Eric Dickerson when I was a kid.

As a Seahawk fan, the Rams return to LA means one less 10-11 AM start for the Seahawks also, as they can just take the 2 hour flight down to LA to play the Rams on West Coast time.

    Thoughts on this hire?

Chip Kelly hired as 49ers head coach

"Chip Kelly has landed back in the NFL as a head coach.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday they had hired Kelly to be the team's new coach.

Kelly established a 26-21 record in three years with the Philadelphia Eagles but was fired when the team was eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16".

Bobcock will know more details on Kelly than me.

His system did not fit with Murray joining the team (Eagles) b/c Murray had to be a different type of running back under Kelly's system. Other reasons also.

It seems the Niner organization needs a massive rebuild which will take some time.

The media was kind of indicating the 49ers initially went after Tom Coughlin. But it sounds like re-building and moving across the country didn't appeal to him.

Now being reported the Eagles have hired somebody else as well as Tampa Bay. The only job I think still open is the Titans.

bsnub: Concur ... I really don't see Chip Kelly as the answer to the 49er woes. But I do expect him to be at least a .500 coach there.

Kelly will make next season interesting win or lose, Coughlin would not have inspired that....

To me this sends one clear message.... Kaepernick is not now finished in San Francisco. This is a hire to give him a second chance.

Kaep played read option in college, but college is not the NFL. He has all the physical tools to be exactly what Kelly wants, more than any of the QBs Kelly had in Philly but I'm a firm believer that Kaep is not smart enough to play the tempo that Kelly asks for. Think of all the burned Time Outs and delay of game penalties that he has allowed because he cannot think at the line of scrimmage......

It's gonna be fun though.... I hope he comes up with a decent DC if he brings his own crew, because that's where we should be building again.

^ Fact is that Kelly is a mediocre coach. He was universally hated in Philly. My forecast is not so bright. I think Kaep will be the starter next year and I also think he will flame out again, the same unease will crop up in the locker room and the niners will have another losing season.

Can't say I disagree with you.

Kelly is not a coach for the NFC West in my book.

All I said it it will be interesting and fun.... the fun is not guaranteed of course.

    I wanted Hue Jackson myself.

Kaepernick has got to be happy with the Kelly hiring to the tune of $12 million for 2016 ... Cha-ching! Kelly must have wanted the 49ers to keep him. Then again they have until April to decide to keep or release.

No he is a terrible choice for this division. His type of team will not match well against the Seahawks or the Cardinals.
