    The Ashes Thread.

Ok, I'll start one 'cos it deserves its own thread. We're welcoming a bloody good side to the Great Isles and, as always, it's a privilege to see some of the world's finest cricketers.

I believe we'll be competitive but KP should still be in the side. Given the progress English cricket had made - at all levels - prior to the last debacle in Oz we shouldn't be in the position of hoping to be competitive. As ever though, it's mismanagement that's got us where we are.

    Come on England!

Nah, let him boast. Aussies have a track record for mouthing off before getting badly stung. Hello Glen Mcgrath. Never forget either: it means much more to them than it does to us.

    2015 Ashes schedule

    • First Test: Sophia Gardens, Cardiff (July 8-12)
    • Second Test: Lord's, London (July 16-20)
    • Third Test: Edgbaston, Birmingham (July 29-August 2)
    • Fourth Test: Trent Bridge, Nottingham (August 6-10)
    • Fifth Test: The Oval, London (August 20-24)

I think the poms have put something in Gillespies beer

Ashes 2015: Michael Clarke hits back at Jason Gillespie's 'Dad's Army' criticism of his squad

Australia captain Michael Clarke has said he expects to prove Jason Gillespie wrong after the former Ashes winner said the current squad is too old ahead of its latest clash with England.
Gillespie, once the scourge of England batsmen, is now the coach of English county champions Yorkshire and was considered for the role of England coach before the job was given to compatriot Trevor Bayliss.
"They're Dad's Army. I'd be thinking 'let's keep them out in the field," the 40-year-old Gillespie said of the current Australia squad in an interview this week with Britain's Daily Mirror.
"'Let's get them tired, they're old blokes. We (England) can put these guys under pressure'."

The Ashes squad contains opening batsman Chris Rogers and wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, both 37, 35-year-old fast bowler Ryan Harris, currently being rested for the series due to persistent injuries, and 34-year-olds Clarke, who has to battle a longstanding back complaint, and Shane Watson.
But Clarke, in his first formal press conference since the squad arrived in England, insisted Gillespie was off target.
"Jason's entitled to his opinion," Clarke told reporters at Merchant Taylors' School, north of London.
"Join the queue. I've copped criticism my whole career.
"There's a long list of people who've criticised this team. We might just add 'Dizzy' to that list of people we continue to prove wrong."

Long run of outs for Australia in England

Australia won the 2013/14 Ashes 5-0, although you have to go back to 2001, when Gillespie was partnering Glenn McGrath with the new ball, for the last time the Australians won an Ashes series in Britain.
Gillespie's final tour of England was his woeful showing in Australia's unsuccessful 2005 campaign, during which he took just three wickets at an average of 100 through three Tests before losing his spot to Shaun Tait.

That famous 2-1 series loss was followed by another in 2009 before a 3-0 loss in 2013.
But Clarke believes Australia can end that run when this season's Ashes get underway with the first Test against England in Cardiff on July 8.
He said the squad had a mix of experience and youth, pointing to the likes of Steve Smith, at the age of 26 now ranked as the world's leading Test batsman, 28-year-old opener David Warner and 27-year-old off spinner Nathan Lyon, who recently passed Hugh Trumble as Australia's most prolific finger spinner.
"A lot of our young players have come a long way over the last few years," Clarke said.
"The senior players deserve a lot of credit for mentoring them and helping them through the tough times, and we're seeing a lot of benefit from that.
"They will play a big role in this series, their youth and enthusiasm is vital to our squad.
"The experience of the senior players is crucial too and hopefully we can find that perfect mix and we're able to have success."
Australia faces county side Kent in its first official match of the tour, a four-day first-class fixture in Canterbury starting on Thursday.

We are going into this ashes with the best squad since 2005. There is chat of bowling four quicks plus Lyon which is possible with the tail wagging so long. We could bat Johnson at 7 and have Johnson, Harris, Starc, Hazelwood & Lyon. That is a lot of fire power and of the standard that the poms haven't tasted since last time we tore them a new arse hole - I think we will take this series due to our current crop of bowlers being far superior. The only thing that concerns me is you have Bayliss *spits* working for you now...

Good to see bell back in the runs for warwickshire.
There's little doubt that England will have to be at their very best to regain the ashes.
However we've seen the Australians crumble under pressure before and with perhaps some luck and the weather on our side...
    Bring it on!

Must admit, that must be a difficult position to be in. Help coach a team that are mortal enemies of your country and previous team ?

And there lies the difference. You see us as "mortal enemies" whereas most of England couldn't give a fuck about you; they're more concerned with Germany or Argentina in the football (the proper one- not that shit where you use your hands to throw an egg shaped thing).

While the whole series against the Kiwis was a breath of fresh air, the Awestralian test side is a different level. Just wait 'til the sledgeing starts. And that is just the comentary teams.
