That Botham thought did cross my mind too...

Not sure about Broad. I like him as a cricketer, but I just don't see him as a captain. He's 33 now, so would be 35 when we next go down under.

There's a lot of water to pass under the bridge before then, but I'd be a fan of Root not being captain in the long term. Fo shu.

Dunno tho really, Cy. I'm massively out of touch with county cricket regarding potential replacements to the squad, but Buttler's someone I've always liked as a level-headed fella who could possibly handle the weight on his shoulders as captain. I can see him coming good this test too. Too much class there.

"Woakes, though named in the squad of 13, was due for a rest, having played all four Tests this summer and the whole of the World Cup. In Anderson’s absence, Sam Curran is the closest to a like-for-like replacement - only Old Trafford is not a swinging ground either, and Curran needs the ball to swing to be a Test-class bowler in addition to being a match-winning lower-order batsman.

Hence Craig Overton, who has played three Tests, all in the Antipodes. Old Trafford specialises in reverse-swing, owing to its abrasive surface, and so does Overton. He can manage some abrasiveness too, which set him apart in his two Tests in Australia when teammates were ready to bow the knee. His spirit is such he has top-scored twice for England already. He also has a twin brother called James, but neither can replace the real Jimmy."

I’ll attribute that drivel to you since you haven’t provided a source. Jimmy would be puzzled.

For the touring Team ... more batting/Bowling practice in local conditions

For the County side ... a chance to say they played against Australia, faced Starc or bowled Steven Smith etc.

    Call it a Cricketing Courtesy

^ Yeh Bladders ... that too

Simon Taufel, former Test cricket umpire, talks DRS after Ashes controversy in Headingley

    The Ashes Thread.-11472148-3x2-700x467-jpg

Simon Taufel has a thing about the constant pursuit of perfection.
It's a waste of time, according to the man who is widely regarded as the one of cricket's best ever umpires.
"The game is not perfect," he says.

There is no black and white, right or wrong, sometimes not even "in" or "out" is as straightforward as it might appear.
Just ask Nathan Lyon and the rest of the Australian cricket team who screamed at umpire Joel Wilson during the final moments of the third Test to give Ben Stokes out LBW to a ball that tracking showed was going to hit middle and leg stumps.

    Not out.

    No reviews left.
    Game over.

This is nonsense. Give them 3 or 4 reviews. Tennis works well with reviews. DRS in cricket needs fixing.

Tennis is an individual sport, Cricket, a team sport.

Two reviews are fine ... just make sure you don't waste them selfishly, as some batsmen do.

As we know, no system is perfect and even though, indirectly it cost the Aussies the last Ashes Test, I prefer the human umpiring element.

What difference does it make? Cricket innings lasts 4 to 10 hours. 2 reviews is not enough. Howlers every series year after year.

Give them 3 reviews every 80 overs.

Tennis got it right early. Cricket system has been a dud.

You can't have a serious sport with such bad umpiring and review system.

Batsmen can't tell sometimes so it's not selfish. They are guessing. The ball arrives in 0.8 secs. The fielding team is also guessing. Guess wrong and they lose a match. Thats wrong. Fix the broken system!

Imagine losing a $5,000 bet due to a dud video system. In horse racing they have protests. In tennis lots of reviews. In rugby league they have a video ref for tries.

The cricket system is the worst in the world. Yeah let's keep it.....

Normally two reviews would be fine, but last Test about 15 decisions were shockers or needed to be changed. What does that tell you? Cricket is supposed to be about bat and ball not managing reviews strategically.

The bowler looks up just before impact
The keeper is behind a batsman
    The fielders are on angles

It's very hard for players to see whether to review or not

People on the coach have the best view and still it's hard sometimes. That Cummins ball looked close on normal speed. Replay showed otherwise.

Either give the players more reviews or allow umpires to review any close call

League refs review any 50/50 try upstairs. There is no limit.

Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor wanted that from start.

Giving players reviews is more exciting but 2 isnt enough as they don't have the best view.

    Overton replaces Woakes.

Convicts still whinging like stuck pigs about fucking up in the third test.

If they'd won, the silence would be deafening.

The Ashes: Australia's history of trying to respond after tight Test losses is not pretty

Australia has had as much success as any cricketing nation in the modern era, but the team has also become expert at losing Tests in agonising fashion.
Ben Stokes added one more to that history in the third Test of the current Ashes series, and now Australia has to pick up the pieces for the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
Unfortunately, their past efforts don't paint a pretty picture.

Australia loses the unlosable — 1981

A lot of non-cricket fans may have been confused over the past week when Stokes's match-saving antics kept being compared to some mysterious "Headingley '81".
What happened? In a slightly longer form, in the third Test of the 1981 Ashes series in England, Australia had a 227-run lead after the first innings and sent England in to bat again. The Aussies had England 6-133 with only out-of-form all-rounder Ian Botham left to bat with the tail. Sounding familiar yet?

    It's a longer article, maybe a 10 min read ...
