    what qualifies as a sport?

in your opinion, what qualifies as a "sport" and what is really just an activity?

as far as i'm concerned a "sport" requires physical exertion and skill in which an athlete (not a machine) competes against another athlete. additionally, a sport generally has a referee and not a judge.

    examples of sports:
    • football
    • swimming
    • basketball
    • rugby

examples of activities and that aren't really sports:
    • video games
    • driving a car around in circles on a track
    • darts
    • cheerleading

    your thoughts?

Yup, driving a race car on a circular track at over 200mph for hours at a time doesn't take any athletic ability- any fat fuck can do it.

Of course, there's a bit of evidence to the contrary:

An ESPN “Sports Sciences” story in 2012 showed what Denny Hamlin goes through in a race. ESPN was allowed to have sensors inside Hamlin’s car—and one inside his body that he swallowed—to gather information during the 2012 Coca-Cola 600.

The ESPN report showed that Hamlin’s car was 130 degrees (54*C) throughout the race, that he sweated 3.5 pints of perspiration an hour, lost 13 pounds of water weight during that event and that his neck supports g-forces of 40 pounds in the turns—in a 400-lap race, that’s 800 40-pound reps with his neck. His heart rate was 130 for the event, which is comparable to an endurance runner except that the Coke 600 lasts twice as long as a marathon would.

Round the Track: It might look simple, but racing takes athletic skill - NASCAR - Sporting News

I've done motorcycle track days that left me spent and aching for days, and I'm in pretty good shape- racing is a completely different level.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

    Specialized physical ability plus competition.

All pastimes. Thus when taken further they have to preface the activity with the word "competitive".

Never heard someone say "competitive football".

Basically, yes- an organized, competitive activity that requires some sort of athletic ability- remove the 'athletic' part and it becomes a game rather than a sport. You can argue as to what constitutes 'athletic ability', of course- would a consistent motion for throwing a dart count, or would good reflexes for video games? I would say 'no' but there might be other opinions- for me, physical ability means strength, speed, flexibility, and endurance.

Golf? I would consider that an activity.

Weightlifting? Activity. Even though it's in the Olympics.

    Bowling? Activity.

again, probably a sport. they should make them carry their own bags, though.

    no and no.

and neither does driving a car around in circles. i'm sure there are parts to it that are difficult (or every billy bob and his uncle/grandfather would be doing it) but that doesn't necessarily make it a sport. to me it's more of a task---drive quickly without crashing.

    From wikipedia:

A sport consists of a physical activity or skill carried out under a publicly agreed set of rules, and with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of skill, or some combination of these. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess.

    Darts is the ultimate sport

Sport - a competitive physical activity I would assume. Darts is competitive and is physical. You have to stand up, drink lots and maintain a steady eye.
I'm shit at darts, but you can not claim it is not a sport.

I thought the most popular sport in America was "Competitive eating, or speed eating, is a sport in which participants compete against each other to consume large quantities of food in a short time period."

If wikipedia describe it as a sport it must be true......
