It's been an interesting year, for Port at least. They've held first position in the Minor Premiership all season- not bad after not even making the final eight the past 3 years. If they beat Colliogwood on Monday they are minor premiers, if they lose, they come second- not a bad place to be for the Finals. Yet the bookies have had them as no better than 4th favorite all year!

Keep proving the bookies wrong boys.

    Season 2022

Go Dees. (Melbourne Demons vs Western Bulldogs)

Grand final reply. Given the number of Melbourne Demons supports that missed out on seeign their team win the first Grand Final in 60 years today's game is a blockbuster and emotional! Of course the Bulldogs want redemption!

I was watching the Demons Bulldogs game with an older Aussie gent.

I said that I liked the aggression in the oval ball game, but my experience with league and Union codes left me at a loss when it came to Aussie rules.
He replied that the rules were a mystery to most Aussies, but they still enjoyed the regional thuggery.

The AFL has tampered far too much with the rules which IMO has spoilt the game. It looks like the rules are made by the insurance company lawyers which may not be far off the truth. Then again like other western countries, Oz is becoming the nanny state.

I don't think either of the main Aussie footie codes can be as thuggish as they were back in the 80's (much though I loved it). Times change. Yesterday's game was pretty good, and those Demons mean business

Well, today's game the ABC rule kicks in. (Anybody but Collingwood) - thus I will be supporting St Kilda.

Good game yesterday, huge crowd at The G and they certainly got their money's worth for some Thursday night entertainment.

It was a good game. Is it that the Tigers have sunk that low or are the Blues a team on the up and up?

^I've been a Carlton supporter going back to the Ryhs-jones days so we'll call it a team on the up

Not sure what's going on with the Tigers, they've won the flag 3 times in the last 5 years thrashing their opposing teams in the GF's but they looked pretty ordinary last year not even making the Finals, and looked no better yesterday once Carlton applied the blow-torch.

^ They are up against Port at the Gabba tomorrow- Ports record there, and against the Lions in general, has been poor in recent years. Will be interesting to see.

Maybe I should follow the AFLW?

Port appears to be the chopping block at the moment. Hopefully Hinkley can turn them around or it will be his head.
Collingwood are on the up but its too early to see how far. It will depend who they find to replace players like sidebottom and Pendles who must be getting close to retirement.
Carlton are also much more of a threat but they could hardly be worse than they have been in the last 20 years.
Looks like another poor year from wet toast and the jury is out on Freo.
The crows look to me like a middle of the ladder side but its early days yet.
The Swans will be a threat this year to many sides and should make the middle region of the eight comfortably.
GWS should be a threat. They will win there share of games and as usual wil beat some good sides and lose to some ordinary ones. Despite the top players gifted to them they have never been able to pull it off and I doubt they will until a change of coach.
Norf looks like another bad year and I cant see them advancing out of the nether regions of the ladder.
The Hawks seem to have got a bit of new life with Mitchell. Time will tell how far they can bounce back but they are a team you can never right off.
Essendon have had a few hiccups but will get better. They are missing A M Tipunwuti who will add some speed when he returns.
Gold Coast looks like more of the same so Dew will be under pressure. Too many losses may see him out before end of season.
Brisbane should be up in the top four but so far they haven't played any team of note away or at home so it is too early to gauge. The tigers look like there in for a mediocre year and I cant see them back at the top any time soon with Dusty and Cotchin ageing. Shai is a shining light who could be more electric than Dusty and has 5 years of top football at least, barring any mishaps.
The saints are too hard to read good one week ordinary the next. Dont know why this team just cannot get any sustained success. They cant blame the coaches forever. The football whole dept, especially recruiting need an overhaul IMO.
Melbourne with so many no1 picks should stay up the top for a couple of years yet. Everyone talks about Petracca but give me Oliver. They will see how hard it is to stay at the top with low draft picks. I expect them to be in the top 3 at the start of the finals.
The Doggies should be there abouts with Melbourne as well. They bat deep in the midfield and English is only getting better.
That leaves my team Geelong. They will need to get better but I expect them despite predictions of falling off the cliff will be there abouts. Dalhouse and Dangerfield both played with injuries last season so I expect them to step up this season. Can they pull off the premiership? Not on present form but they will beat enough teams to be in the top 5 and injuries make a difference at the end of the season so I will take some comfort in that.

The game of the round is Geelong V Brisbane this week and will be a further gauge on where these two teams are this season. Big Sav needs to be dropped He oversizes the forward line with Hawkins and Cameron and only averages 4 or 5 possessions. Geelong still have 4 or 5 players to come back and I expect 2 of them to get a game this week. I expect O'Connors first game back will be to shadow Neile. A tall order on his first game for the season. It should be a great game with the Captain Joel Selwood being rested after breaking the record for the highest number of games as captain in VFL/AFL history.

Disclaimer: In saying all that it is only round 3 and I always think you need to be in round eight to know who will be in the top 6 or 7 at end of season. 8th is a consolation prize to make up the numbers. Feel free to disagree or add to my rather brief synopsis of many of the teams.

Collingwoods feral supporters do draw criticism from other sides and for years were the team other supporters loved to hate especially in the days where these teams were seen as suburban teams, mostly inner suburban Melbourne. In fact in the early VFL pre AFL days 6 teams were from suburbs within 2 or 3 k/m of each other sparking much inter suburban rivalry. Since the VFL morphed into the AFL and became proffessional the younger supporters born after 2000 seem to look more at team rivalries IMO.
On some AFL opinion sites there are a fair few anti Geelong posters. Geelong has made the finals about 15 times out of the last 16 years and many opposition supporters seem to either hate or are envious of Geelongs consistency, I'm not sure which.
Most non Victorian sides have their feral supporters especially when playing a team from Victoria.
The non victorian fans dislike the dominance of Victoria (where the game originated) on the national competition, for those not familiar with AFL.

^Like about 99% of sports played around the world, there's a finals series for the highest ranked teams at the end culminating in the last 2 teams standing playing each other to see who wins the trophy. You're surely joking with your dumb question though, nobody could be that thick.

So other teams can have a better season than you, but you get a second chance to win something.

That's the sort of stupid hit they do in America.

I'm not surprised really, these sort of sports are just made for the armchair fan.

Have you ever watched any other sport besides girlie fucking soccer? Ever?

Never heard of playoffs or finals series or grand finals or Championship matches and the like where the first step to winning anything is to finish the regular season or tournament towards the top of the ladder then battle it out with the other best teams or players? Soccer is the rare exception because it's such a physical sport and the players have to let their bodies heal before that next hairdressers appointment, to have to play again after the regular season is over and risk another blade of grass grazing them is absurd.
