Double amputee and Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius has reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend, after mistaking her for a burglar.

South African media are reporting the incident happened at his Silver Lakes home at around 4am on Thursday morning.

Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed to a South African website that Pistorius's girlfriend was shot in the head and arm and died at the scene.

Pistorius, 26, dubbed Blade Runner for the blade-like prosthetics he wears for his double under-knee amputation, is reportedly in police custody.

Details are thin, but according to reports out of Johannesburg, Pistorious mistakenly took his girlfriend for a burglar and fatally shot her in the head and arm early Thursday morning.

Almost six million South Africans have guns, and the nation has one of the world's highest gun ownership rates at 12.7 forearms per 100 people.

So far the news I have heard is (1) he's been arrested (2) he claims he mistook her for an intruder and (3) he shot her in the arm and head.

Kind of don't think it is accidental if the police thought there was enough evidence to arrest him, and the entire mistaking for intruder is kind of hard to justify when he shot her in the arm first, which would make me go "hey dear, you can stop shooting it's me."

Police spokeswoman Denise Beukes said earlier reports that the suspect had been surprised by his girlfriend and had thought she was an intruder did not come from police.

She said there had been reports from neighbours of shouting and screaming coming from the house earlier in the evening. She said police had been called to the house on previous occasions after reports of "a domestic nature".

He was probably pissed that she was the one who wore,the pants in the relationship.

I just have a real real hard time thinking this is an accidental shooting. Before I found out there was a story here I posted an article in the world news section that had a picture of Pistorius's gated community with guards. Yes South Africa is violent. That's why the wealthy live in gated communities with guards. Really if I lived in that kind of community I wouldn't just start shooting.

Bail for paralympian Oscar Pistorius will be opposed when he appears in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court later on Thursday, Gauteng police said.


“He will appear in court at 2pm and bail will be opposed,” said Brigadier Denise Beukes.

This was after the shooting at his home of model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp.

“We are at this stage as the SA Police Services not able to disclose why are we opposing the bail,” said Beukes.

Pistorius was held at the Boschkop police station in the morning, then taken to the Mamelodi Day Clinic and was expected to be taken to the court after that.

Pistorius was co-operating with police, she said.

Beukes said there had been incidents of domestic violence at his place.

“I confirm there had been previous incidents of a domestic nature at his place but this will form part of the investigation,” she said.

She said there was no sign of forced entry into Pretorius’ house and reports that the woman was shot after she was mistaken for an intruder were not coming from the police.

“As SA Police Services we do not have a report based on those allegations. We only heard over the radio that the woman was shot after she was mistaken for an intruder.” Beukes said forensic detectives were busy collecting evidence from the crime scene and journalists would not be allowed in until the police handed over the scene to the estate’s security company.
