'World of Warcraft' Now Free-to-Play Through Level 20
Is there a gamer alive today who hasn't played World of Warcraft? I mean, surely there must be some holdouts, boldly resisting the siren call of Blizzard's wildly popular MMORPG. Surely some have yet to succumb to Blizzard's unhalting march of conquest! If you're reading this, you are the Resistance!
Ah, forget it. There's no use. Blizzard cannot be stopped. With the most recent update to World of Warcraft, "Rage of the Firelands," they've rolled out a new program that is sure to bring in even the most tenacious WoW objectors. The new program extends WoW's popular 14-day free trial program... indefinitely. That's right, adventurers--you'll now be able to battle your way through the war-torn world of Azeroth as long as you like without paying so much as a copper piece. Of course, the new "Starter Edition" does come with some limitations--you won't be able to advance your character past level 20 without subscribing, for example, and you won't have access to content from all of the game's expansions. You will, however, have some Burning Crusade goodies open to you with no price tag attached, as Starter Edition players can create Draenei and Blood Elf characters in addition to those of standard races.
If you try out WoW with the Starter Edition and decide you're in love, you can easily jump right into the adventure proper with a digital Battle Chest. For $19.99, you'll get a copy of the base game and Burning Crusade, plus a month of game time. If I were another MMO, I'd be shaking in my +2 Boots of Agility right now. Competing with WoW is tough enough as it is--but free WoW? Will this juggernaut ever cease its onslaught?
