MM doesn't want to bother with the second half tonight. I'm not that pushed.

The story really could be told in the present, rather than the past, using new young actors. Surely the old tried and tested aren't the only ones that can do Italian/Irish mafia roles. Adrien Brody was superb as an Italian gangster in Peaky Blinders for example.

I really enjoyed 'The Irishman' (which I watched in one sitting- the wife and kid were out for the day)- I thought Pacino and Pesci were terrific, I wasn't bored by the pacing, and I liked the more sympathetic portrayal of Hoffa than he usually gets in movies. This is almost certainly the last time we're going to see the classic Scorsese crew in a movie (he even got Harvey Keitel in there, which was great)- they're all in their late-70s/early-80s, and it's only a matter of time until they're gone.

8.5/10 for me, but I'm a fan of the director, actor, and genre- I was predisposed to giving it a good review.

I thought Pesci was in his 80s (he's 77, as is De Niro- Scorsese is 78)- actually, Keitel is the only one who's 80- Pacino hits that mark in April.

Still, they're up there...

As an aside, I knew I'd seen the actress playing Hoffa's wife somewhere- she played the flaky drug courier who screwed Henry Hill in 'Goodfellas'.

It's not that bad. It's a Fox/Canal+ co-production that does however shift between English and French. Gabriel Byrne is the lead.

But it does have a crap ending.

It was a poor remake of Casino. Casino gets 9/10 (maybe 9.5 on a good day).

The Irishman gets a 6.5 out of 10 and the .5 was generous. I agree Pesci was very good; the standout, imho. Pacino was decent, he almost always is. Deniro was poor, should never have been given the role, and at times his younger and older self looked really fake (not his fault, but the way they did the ageing process); the man character never really developed any depth in the 3 hours, and certainly came nowhere near the title in any of his behaviour traits - just wasn't a believable Irishman; Deniro made him look like an Italian through and through. Very poor casting of the main character meant the movie never had a chance, and your score Mr Failsafe, is way off the mark. Comm'on man, a 3 hour movie, quite a slow burner, where the main character developed no depth and was never believable in the role (along with very weird looking young self and old self), one of the main themes of him developing a relationship with his daughter was badly acted on both sides and just failed... Did you really care about the main character in the end, good or bad? But, I was surprised the Pesci was still around, and a bit of a different role for him (within a very small genre/typecasting) which he did really well.

Whatever- I guess we watched two different movies. Over 60,000 reviews on IMDB with an 8.4 rating, 96%/86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and similar reviews on other sites- looks like a lot of people watched a different movie than you did.

It's Ok with me that you didn't like it, and my opinion remains unchanged- I thought it was excellent.

Did you actually think Deniro, the main character, was good or believable? Did you enjoy Deniro's performance?

How would you compare this movie with Casino? How would you compare Deniro's performance in Casino with his performance in this movie?

I am genuinely interested in your answers; it's all just opinions which we are all entitled to.

The director's efforts were tired and old; no reinvention or development, just a poor remake of his prior excellence - lazy and unimaginative.

Maybe it's the anticipation of big budget, long-awaited movies? Often, these types of films look decent when watched a few years later.

It was different than Casino, which I also thought was excellent. De Niro's portrayal was supposed to be of a low-key character who was affected more by events and powerful people and swept along by circumstance than a someone who 'called the shots', which is more what he was in Casino (where the character of Ace had a MUCH higher opinion of himself and his view of his own power and influence, though he turned out to be fooling himself- in The Irishman, there wasn't so much of that- Frank knew what he was, and ultimately hated himself- that wasn't true of Ace, who still saw himself as having value even after getting knocked off his perch).

In that sense, I saw Frank as believable. I didn't need a big dramatic scene with his daughter- it would have been completely out of character- he lost her, he knew why he lost her, and made feeble attempts at reconciliation that had no real chance of succeeding, as she was never going to get from him what she wanted. The funeral scene where she wouldn't even look at him once was enough to tell the story. He was a basically cold, unemotional person- they exist in real life- I've known them- it wasn't a stretch to accept De Niro's performance.

As I said, we watched the movie from different perspectives- I wasn't looking for or expecting 'Casino 2'.

That's all I've got to say on it.

^^Yeah could be. It was by no means a commercial failure but still seemed to under-perform for the good critical response it got.

Aliens, time-travel, Tom Cruise... Pretty much all the ingredients for a smash hit there.

Anyways can recommend revisiting it.

it was quite good indeed, really liked it. Even Tom Cruise was good in it for a change.

Don't think it was overlooked, but in the world of Marvel and DC Comics, these are easily forgotten
