the entire LA quartet is a good read.

I enjoyed 'The Black Dahlia' and 'The Big Nowhere'.

With 'White Jazz' Ellroy was beginning to slide out of view for me.

I later bought 'The Cold Six Thousand' and found it totally unreadable.

Those maximum four or five word sentences drove me nuts after about two chapters.

I did really rate 'American Tabloid' though.

In fact thinking about it I'd say 'American Tabloid' and 'LA Confidential' are equally excellent.

Into the Night (2020, Netflix)

I made the mistake of looking at the Netflix rating, which is obviously nowadays a measure of how desperate people are for things to watch than how good it is.

With a plot ripped out of "Down to a Sunless Sea", a bunch of strangers are stuck on a plane racing away from dawn (it's a "cosmic event" apparently).

It seems the writers must have had about ten minutes to write each episode.

Utter fucking dross. 1/10

It's Belgian, so Buttplug will probably love it.

L.A. Confidential (1997); IMDB 8.2. Good detective movie. Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger. 2 hours plus; lot of action.

was a bit slow and long though, good casting.

Succession

I had not heard of this show until I read some good reviews of season 2 which came out before Christmas.

Good fun. Just finished season 1. High octane drama in the family of a US media mogul (the craggy Brian Cox). Builds the tension well through 9 episodes and sets up a firework of a final show.

(only spoiled a bit by excessive moronic shaky jump-zoom camera work - when will muppet directors get some confidence in their material and stop trying to distract viewers with this garbage style of direction)

Looking forward to season 2 which gets better reviews than season 1.

i'm about halfway through the final season of homeland, and i'm not sure why it got good reviews on this thread....perhaps it will pick up.....planning to watch another episode this afternoon.

and i'm probably nitpicking here, but what's the deal with that CIA "situation room" in kabul......it's got more windows than a solarium.

It's not easy to explain.

By the time it's got around to season 8, anyone watching it is attuned to it being...kinda crappy.

Within that paradigm season 8 was...quite good, particularly up against a shit season 7.

You do have to overlook a lot though.

Like the central absurdity of the president of the US and the president of Afghanistan being together in a heliopter flying close to a Taliban occupied area, for example.

I can safely say I won't ever know that particular ending.

I'm making my way through some of the black&whites from the 50s. Hate to say it, but I prefer the movies from the '30-'50s than most of the shite nowadays.

A lot are not particularly spectacular, but they have a feel-good factor that I like or sometimes just a ha-ha moment...

Inner Sanctum (1948) has some great lighting at the beginning...

The Fast and the Furious (1954) has some lovely footage of my favourite Jag...

39 Steps (1935) is still my favourite version, although the 2008 version wasn't bad and closer to the book.

The Lady Vanishes (1938) is just brilliant...

Just in case there are a few oldies on TD who loved the black&white era...we never had a colour TV until 1973....

I am amazed by the qualify of story and acting in some of those old movies, didn't age that much

We didn't have a tv at all in 1973.

I'd left primary school in 1974 before the b+w tube returned to our humble abode.

^ I guess we were, had a TV since around 1964 in our house, although my Dad preferred the radio. TV is for the lazy, my Mother used to say, and it stifles the imagination that comes from radio and books. It took me many years to realise how right she was and now I prefer theatre to TV or film.

All the same, there are some great B&W movies for free on the internet. Reminds me of the thruppenny bit matinees we went off to watch on a Saturday morning.

Which worked for a while then died.

My earliest tv memory was watching the 1970 world cup final.

Jairzinho, Rivelino Tostao and all those fantastic names.

My old man bought one in 1969 so we could watch the moon landing, but I suspect I was too young to understand the significance because I only remember getting a clip round the ear for moaning about being woken up at stupid o'clock, it was like three in the morning or something.
