Because he was an educated, handsome charming guy, he didn't fit any profiles of a murderer, and police forces back in the 70's weren't at all coordinated across State lines and regs, so Bundy evaded capture for a long time, and no one really knows even now how many women he killed.. After initial capture and incarceration, Bundy duly escaped and went on another killing spree in Florida.
