    Arrrggh!

This has gone beyond frustrating now! Can't even d/l the Java thing.

It lets me start the download, says it is completed yet when I do the 'Test Installation' (even after closing and re-opening my browser) it says: "You do not have the latest version of Java installed"

    WTF!?!

I think you should install the latest version of Java.

Or better still use a decent BitClient like uTorrent or BitComet.

You don't know what your'e talking about if you call BitComet a decent client.
It has always been a cheating client, unwilling to give away rare pieces and doing disconnect tricks in order to get more of rare pieces from seeders.
Yes, more pieces to keep for itself..

Azureus and uTorrent are the two decent clients to choose between.

The java Runtime in the link I gave you is JRE 1.50 version 6.
Version 10 is out now but Azureus doesn't need that one.

It was from following the JRE d/l link off of the link you gave me (the one together with the Azureus downloads). That in turn took me to another Java d/l page and the problem(s) occurred from there

Sorry, can´t reproduce that here since my Java installation is ok.
I get "Java Detected : 1.5.0_06 from Sun Microsystems Inc. on Windows XP"
    on the second page.
And no downlaod symbol (Windows flag) for the JRE since they detected that I don't need their download..

I think you have to use Add/Remove Program in Windows Control Panel , remove all instances of Sun Java (J2SE) and then start over with a new download..

pissed off, was looking forward to that.

Ahhh, that was going to be my next question - is it safe to do that. I checked and there were 3 instances (all apparently different updates of 143-odd-MB!?

My PC is doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things now... some icons appear to have changed to the Windows default for one.

Think I'll give up on these torrents thing and stick with Limewire. That hasn't caused me any probs other than sometimes struggling to find d/l's I want. All this port-forwarding and stuff has me in a right tizz

Running TuneUp Utlilities/Registry Cleaner now to see if I can't remedy the probs. I'll no doubt fock that up and cause a terminal err... [whizz! bang! pop!]

Your system seems to be unaware of the arrival of the most recent one
Remove the older ones, keep the most recent and restart.
If that doesn't help, remove the last one and download it again.

    Limewire is so yesterday..

Yeah I know... trouble is - and I know I've been hiding it well - I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to all this stuff. What I really need is for someone to physically come and set-up my computer, forward me ports and show me how to do stuff before leaving me on my own to fock it up.

Say, you aren't free tomorrow are you?

Actually I wonder if there's any such decent 'consultants' in Chiang Mai? CMN, any ideas?

The idea that I have a semblance of a clue would tickle some of the folk on here.
Anyway, you are hogging Lom to yourself and I want him to tell me how I make the sound work for father Ted.

^ GSpot is an application you should download.
Open the movie file with GSpot and it will tell you the name of the codecs used for video and audio. Download the missing codec.

I think you are owed about 20 greenies.

BTW, I am downloading the vlc player recommended for such problems on torrentspy, what do you think?

VideoLan player is a good one, can often solve problem like yours because it has a lot of codecs built in.
Doesn't always help though, sometimes you just have to find out what is missing in your system, and enhance it.

I think you should start again too. Uninstall Java and anything else you've done recently - either through "Control Panel/Add Remove Programs" or the program's own Uninstall utility.

Pity. About giving up, I mean. I was quite admiring your tenacity in your previous posts ... reminded me of how I was when I realised that P2P and BitTorrents were the way of the future and (for me) "Bearshare" was of the past.

Once you get the concepts straight in your head, it's not too bad... at least you can start asking sensible questions when you have problems - but it takes a lot of reading. Try googling for BitTorrents and read some basic information about it. The Azureus wiki is pretty good, but may be too specific for the Azureus client.

So I would try the download of Azureus again and persevere - it's well worth it.

    Back to your specific questions:

Your Thompson SpeedTouch DSL modem probably has UPnP Support - many of them do - so click here and see if you are directed to the modem's configuration page. You should've got some documentation or software with the device, but if not try to find a link to "UPnP" support and enable it. (If you get directed to a login password, try entering "1234" )

You also need to start the UPnP service on your PC. That can be found in "Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services". Mine is set to "Automatic".

Also, change the port that Azureus is using from the default (6881?) to something around 55,000 - that works fine for me, anyway. You can find that setting in Azureus's Tools/Options tab. Change both "Incoming TCP Listen Port" and "UDP Listen Port" to the same high number.

    Good luck!

    RDN,

Cheers, appreciate all the help that you and Ion in particular are able to give - you've certainly more paitence with idiocy than I!

You're 100% correct I'll have to do some research. I will try it again, fairly certain I'll get my head around it eventually... maybe...
