I'm using the same port number (just over 54,000) for both TCP and UDP listens.
1. Under Tools / Options / Connection, enter the same port number (54xxx) in both boxes.
I've also set Azureus to use encryption (I think FF told us how):
2. Under Tools / Options / Mode, check the "Advanced" button.
3. Under Tools / Options / Transport Encryption, I've checked everything except the bottom box ("use the 'cryptoport'..."). Minimum encryption level is set to RC4.
I'm now saturating my 512kbps link and will be going to 1000kbps next month.
Anyone wanting to know any other settings I use, post here!
I used that site - excellent. I used it to set up my router to forward the 54xxx port to my computer's IP address (gleaned from > ipconfig/all) and to enable UPnP.
However, now that I'm confident Azureus is working OK - and that Maxnet isn't blocking it - I will go through everything I did again, to determine what is the minimum configuration changes I need to make to get Azureus working. For example, I've also configured a static IP address for my Internet connection as per the "portforward.com" instructions, but I don't know if this is really necessary.
It is only necessary if you have more than one computer on the network under your router.
Note that this "static IP address" refers to the *internal network*, the LAN, not the *external network* (WAN). It is the external (WAN) IP address that shows on the Internet.
With dynamic IP address allocation, the opposite of a static IP, the router will assign a new IP address to the computer when it is turned on again after having been shut off. If you have more than one computer, obviously the IP addresses can be shuffled, which means the port forwarding setting you made will then point to the wrong machine.
Example: Your computer (com 1) used to have the internal IP address 192.168.1.3 assigned to it before you turned it off, but since you turned on the other computer (com 2) in the local area network before the first one, it got 192.168.1.3, and since that is occupied, com 1 is now assigned 192.168.1.4 instead - so what happens is that when you start Azureus on com 1 it won't work, because the port is only open for 192.168.1.3 ...

Encryption is the answer to most problems.
UPnP will take care of portforwarding in the modem/router if the modem/router is UPnP capable. In such case you don´t need to do any configuration of the router.
The UPnP log in Azureus will show you if UPnP is active or not.
Some cheap routers (like mine) cannot handle UPnP though.
Marmite, do you know any torrent sites specialized on music instruction material?
How does this torrent idea compare to say eMule? I want to search for and download books. eMule is pretty good at finding the stuff, but a bit slow in downloading.
Torrents are generally much faster than Emule, from Thailand anyway. I recommend using uTorrent as a client.
The system is based on a 'tracker' (an intermediary webpage/server) on which there are posted download links to torrent files (*not* links to the actual stuff you are going to download, as that is spread out among other torrent users). These torrent files describe what should be downloaded. So let's say there is a link for the book "What is BitTorrent".
You click on the link, download the small torrent file and open it with your BitTorrent client. Now, your client connects to the tracker to identify all other users who are currently downloading or uploading the files belonging to this particular torrent. When it finds somebody, it starts to download pieces of the torrent (these are actual pieces of the material to be downloaded, but hashed up into equal sized blocks, unusable until you have them all).
You now will get pieces from all the users you are connected to. As soon as you have one piece, you start sharing this piece with others. Your client sends out information of what pieces you have, so others can get them from you, and vice versa.
So instead of downloading one large file from the same source, everyone in the torrent trades pieces with each other, reducing the individual load and speeding up the sharing process. For the system to work well, you should stay and "seed" (i.e. upload) the torrent once you have got 100%, until your upload/download ratio equals at least one (this way you only take as much as you give). If everyone does this, the torrents never die. But if people leave the torrents before seeding up to a ratio of 1:1, the torrents will soon have no participants with 100%, and so they will die.

Thanks very much for an excellent explanation. I'll go over to uTorrent and see how I get on. Thanks again.
-----
uTorrent installed and 2 downloads in progress. Funny thing is I'm running uTorrent and eMule in parallel - with no slowdown of eMule - actually, it's speeded up! Must use different ports.
What search engines do you use to find torrents?

Excellent description Skulldigger. I've only recently started using torrents and I'm using Azureus - I'm actually using it now 25KBytes/sec down and 15 up.
I've quoted the bit above because I've found you CAN use the bits you've got, even if not complete - certainly for video and audio files, anyway.
I use torrentscan.com to search for music torrents because it lists all the top torrent search web sites in the left panel, and you enter what you're looking for just once and then click on each torrent search web site in turn to get the results. You can re-order the torrent search web sites as you like - this is what I've done based on a few searches for some obscure audio torrents (Steve Miller Band - Number 5, White Noise - Electric Storm):
Using this site also means that you don't have to keep going to your bookmarks to try different web sites as the best ones are all here.

Thanks for that LOM, I have enabled UPnP in my router and saved the settings.Originally Posted by lom

What am I doing wrong ?
The router settings still say UPnP enabled but I have to click on 'enable' to get it started again. How can I get it to run all night ?
Perhaps your router is overheating? Could also be that your internet folks are 'tweeking' your feed & switching off the UPnP... My darlings drop my carrier at least once per day on the 24-hour mark... True...
Do they drop it at midnight ?Originally Posted by diaw

It's not difficult for a carrier to send out a signal-drop at a pre-determined time. Sometimes they just test if the carrier is in use, or not & this can make trouble with some systems.
I'm with TOT ADSL
Sorry I am an idiot on this subject but why does it not restore UPnP if it has been set to 'enable' in the stored settings ?
I've found some odd things with communications systems - some things reset themselves ok, but others seem to need a manual override of sorts... could be that default settings are restored by the router, or the software, or something in the network card... I've often come in to find a very slow transfer & after a few manual overrides - everything runs up to top speed again...
I run both eMule & uTorrent 24/7... uTorrent seems pretty stable, but eMule can sometimes be downright pernickety... both are running in parallel on the same computer... perhaps one pushes the other back & locks its hold? I did also see the same problems with eMule alone - & funnily at around 07h00 - 08h30 every morning the transfer rate goes ballistic, before cutting back down to slow speeds... It sure looked like network control from True's end...

That´s a bit weird.. What brand name and model of router do you have ?Originally Posted by Thetyim

That's a good point. I wonder if the computer writes the setting info into some sort of EEPROM memory on the router, so that it defaults to the new setting after power-dips etc?
Wonder what it says in its manual?
Well it is model number x8268rOriginally Posted by lom

I am only using network cables the wireless connection is unused at the moment
