I actually preferred this to the cat one. I felt sorry for the cats having to wear those heavy cameras around their necks!! If i had tried to put one of those on my cat I would probably need plastic surgery...!!!

In 1968, America was divided over the Vietnam War. Due to the growing anti-war movement, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced that he would not run for re-election. Democrat Robert Kennedy, the Presidential hopeful, was assassinated that summer. The Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago where leaders of the anti-war movement planned a protest. During the protest, Chicago Mayor Daley used police force to brutally quell the rally, and as a result, rioting broke out in the streets. One person was killed, hundreds were injured and thousands were arrested. One year later, newly-elected President Richard Nixon gave the green light to prosecute eight men who were accused of conspiracy to incite a riot. The FBI brought them to Chicago, where they stood trial. They were known thereafter as The Chicago 8.

The Act of Killing

In the wake of a failed coup in Indonesia in the mid-60s, more than a million people were murdered in a bloody anti-communist cull. Many of the killings – and the persecutions that followed – were carried out by gangsters who have not only escaped prosecution, but are now heralded as local heroes. Attempting to understand the open-ended legacy of such unpunished atrocities, film-maker Joshua Oppenheimer not only interviewed the killers (whose actions are anything but hidden) but asked them to stage dramatic reconstructions of their (non-)crimes, to "create scenes about the killings in whatever way they wished". His title, "The Act of Killing", encapsulates this duality, not only examining the awful reality of murder, but also staging its re-enactment. Like some horrendous real-life version of Man Bites Dog, we spend the next two hours in the company of laughing, joking mass-murderers, blithely revisiting their blood-drenched past in a manner that is at once insanely surreal and distressingly domestic.

Just watched the first of what is going to be a three part documentary 'Stalingrad'. Some excellent archived film, coupled with survivors stories, both Russian and German. Well worth watching:

I would have thought that Nazis being sent to Nazi camps would have been well treated , if they shared common goals .

Actually, the regular German soldiers and Nazis were separated. It was an interesting film. Most of them came from North Africa and were caught by the Brits. The Brits thoroughly interrogated them to see if they were Nazis before giving them to the Americans. The Americans had the Nazis raise their hand and checked under their arms for SS tattos and blood groups. In war, if they were Nazis they got blood first.

At the camps the prisoners actually had it better than a lot of the Americans outside the camps. The US strictly followed the Geneva convention in hopes that their soldiers would be treated equally. Once the war ended and the news came out of what the Nazis did, a lot of the Geneva convention stuff was tossed. You'll find it an interesting story with new information. Some of the prisoners even came back to the US to live after repatriation to Germany. One interesting fact was prisoners had to be in camps in locations similar to the location they were captured in. This was another Geneva convention rule. So, all those North African prisoners went to Texas which some thought was even hotter than North Africa.
