Last night started watching a BBC2 offering, "The Detectives: Murder on the streets". For the first few minutes I thought I was watching a fictional series, but no, it's actually a fly on the wall documentary following a team of real detectives in Manchester's police. This was the first of what will be a 4 part series. Some very good night time filming adds to the atmosphere.

    Download here:

Or watch the full episode via YouTube:

Anyone been watching the Ken Burns/Lynn Novick Vietnam doco from PBS? I've watched some of it...but it just pisses me off and makes me sick at the same time.

The Vietnam War: A film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick

sponsored by Bank of America. "All wars are banker's wars."

At the risk of pissing you both off...what's the crux of the matter?

Is it that wars don't have a financial base, or something deeper?

For me, looking back, it was the lies from the top that got us there. It was all such a goddamned waste of lives(not just the dead) on all sides. For what?

Not to mention, it seems to me, nothing was learned from the Vietnam War.

Well,....what was it about the docu's premise that would potentially piss you off.

If I remember correctly (Davis) - you're a war veteran.

I was a grunt in the 101st Airborne LRRP teams during the bloodiest year (68-69) of the war - we fought in six major campaigns during that year. I lost a lot of friends killed, wounded, or simply damaged - including a number of good friends from High School. I don't watch documentaries because I normally hate the way grunts are portrayed - by people who weren't there. I was 19, as were my friends. We didn't start the war, we just went, and then tried our best to stay alive, and keep each other alive. I don't need a history lesson. Fine for others if they please, just not for me.

I understand that...what pisses me off was that it was all pointless. Except for the select few who profited from the miseries you and others went through. You and others like you should have never been put into that situation to begin with.

Can I ask...did you and others at the time believe the reasons given for being sent to Vietnam? Or did you know deep down that it was all BS?

Yes I'm too young to have been there, but I witnessed many of the damaged back home. Several of them were co-workers of my Dad...and then later on as I grew older co-workers of mine. Just about all of them refused to talk about it. But it fucked up their lives. Again...for what?

Davis, I was going to post further but was called away for a moment:

Thank you for your service. I know it's a little dated, but I assure you that the gratitude is sincere.

Honestly, I don't recall anyone ever giving us reasons. "Line up and board the aircraft" was about it. Once there, I don't recall any deep philosophical/intellectual conversations about the war. Conversations were about weapons, food, cars, pussy and booze. Most of us were fairly fatalistic. I was more terrified during my last 30 days - simply because I never thought I'd get that close to actually making it.

I was going to say earlier that from the parts of Burn's Doco I've watched, I actually thought the "grunts" POV was being presented pretty sympathetically. You may have a different opinion though. That however is not what pissed me off about it. Listening to "officialdom" from back then did that.

Enjoying Netflix new crime documentary series the Confession Tapes. First two episodes focused on a single story. Third episode is the beginning of a new one so I assume it'll be a number of different cases covered over a season.

I've watched the first 5 now. Brilliant and thought/anger provoking stuff.

And it ain't for binge watching. One episode per night is more than enough.

Surely we learned that the war escalated mostly due to LBJ rescinding JFK's order to start withdraw troops within days of becoming president. That LBJ bastard was the biggest crook, liar and murderer ever to hold that office.

And we also learned that Nixon committed treason to get elected (as did Reagan), and Johnson covered it up.

Yep, once you get north of Watford, they go rapidly downhill.

Go a bit further and you hit Scotland.
