Antarctica - A Year on ice

I watched Werner Herzog's documentary 'Encounters at the end of the world' recently which was about his trip to Antarctica and the odd mixture of people who choose to work there.

It was a good taster from a seasoned doco maker and anything by Herzog can't fail to have an interesting flavour.

This doco is a different enterprise. Virtually a lifetime's work by kiwi Anthony Powell who has spent much time in the place, including a winter, which is the focus of the piece. Arrestingly beautiful time lapse photography is mixed with short interviews and musings on life.

After seeing the 2015 British Academy Television Awards winners list yesterday I thought I would give the winner for the best Single Documentary a viewing.

Once regarded as something that happens exclusively in Guy Ritchie films and on gypsy sites, bare knuckle boxing is fast becoming a thriving scene in the UK -- the ultimate British bloodsport.

When Clive Martin embeds with the bare knuckle boxing elite, what he discovers is not dissimilar to Fight Club; IT technicians, builders, lifestyle coaches and even a solicitor, all throwing their unprotected fists into each other's faces. It's a subculture of honour, pride and violence.

As the UK prepares to play host to the first US vs UK bare knuckle title fight in 150 years -- the biggest event the scene has known since it went underground in the 19th Century -- Clive tries to find out if violence is a cause or effect for these angry young men.

You're kidding, the U.S. has had a series about that for years.
    'to catch a predator'.
They do it in conjunction with the cops.
    Some funny shit there.

    Dogs of War

Dogs of War: Dogs of War documents Jim and Lindsey Stanek, a married couple who started a nonprofit organization called Paws and Stripes, benefiting PTSD veterans paired with adopted dogs who help them adjust back to regular life after returning home from war. Each episode will feature the story of one or two veterans as they get matched with a potentially life-saving best friend and begin their journey out of darkness.

I'd probably cry too much. Those vids on You Tube of dogs being reunited with their Army owners just floor me everytime. One was funny - they showed a cat at the end that just lifted its head and then went back to sleep!!

    But i shall watch.

It doesn't matter which sort of pedophiles they are searching for. At least they get them.

Gascoigne review – heartening but cursory documentary of troubled footballer

This film about the life and career of footballer Paul Gascoigne soft-pedals on the difficult questions, but does give Gazza the chance to tell his own story

Jane Preston’s documentary tackles the week’s most extraordinary narrative – the life of footballer Paul Gascoigne, as told in his own words – in naggingly cursory fashion. It plumps for fond tribute rather than anything more instructive. The first half rounds up the highlights: the singular on-pitch talent, the anecdotes featuring such priceless inquiries as: “Can I borrow an ostrich?” Then the daftness shades into something else; viewed in retrospect, that night in Turin suggested tears – and recklessness – were never far away. Here, Preston backs off: there’s nowt on Sheryl, and the final moments barrel past Gascoigne’s recent troubles much as his younger self did opposition defenders. Still, it’s heartening to see those old crowdpleasing instincts return when discussing, say, that Vinnie Jones photo. For the first time in years, Gazza is allowed to express himself as only he could.

Dick Proenneke retired from his diesel machanic career in 1967. He spent that summer exploring the Twin Lakes region looking for the ideal site to build a cabin and cutting logs that he would use the next year.
Dick Proenneke returned to Twin Lakes on May 21, 1968 and began turning the raw logs into his cabin. He stayed in Spike's cabin during the construction.
Dick Proenneke built his cabin using only hand tools, no backhoes, no chainsaws, no electric drill, just hand powered tools. Dick even made many of his tools himself.
Dick's cabin measured 11' by 14'. It had a gravel floor, windows, a dutch door, a fireplace, and a moss covered waterproof roof. He had to build all his own furniture too, chairs, tables, desk and his bunk. He also built a cache to store his food out of the reach of the animals.
