I would like to buy a small sized MP3 player complete with speakers etc, something like the old boom boxes things.
Are they available, if so any recs? as I obviously dont have a clue

I use my Ipod and some of these. The sound fills a medium sized room and sounds good. They fold down small enough to fit in some cargo pockets on trousers and the batteries last a suprisingly long time.

Cheaper bits are available but just don't have quite the sound.

You'll find 'ghetto blasters' that accept MP3 discs in most electrical stores/departments. This is okay if you want something completely self-contained, but it would lack the flexibility of a an 'iPod-like' digital player. As Bob said, best to go for a hand-held MP3 player and purchase the speakers seperately.

I'd go for an iPod A2. They may be a little more expensive, but you do get a very stylish piece of hardware. I saw the 60Gb model for around £270 ( 19K B) at Heathrow. The Nanos are very chic, about the size of a after dinner mint and the 4 Gb model is around £150 (10K) - no doubt cheaper at the airport. NB: If you buy in LOS it may be possible to claim the VAT back if you are deemed to be a tourist.

Finally, I'd always recommend to buy the biggest model that you can afford, you will use up the space. Also, shop around for special offers, e.g. free docking station, extra year's warranty.

Its worth paying the extra! Glad you liked them. Mine have travelled with me for a while and tho not quite as pearly white as they were they still give great sound.
