Is Guy Ritchie a one trick pony?

I thought the films Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch were very good films, both about London gangsters.

Ritchie has now finished a movie called RocknRolla, also about London gangsters.
He was reported as saying that the paying public better like it as he has already written a sequel.

All of the movies that he made that weren't about London gangsters have bombed; Swept Away comes to mind.

He does have flashes of directorial brilliance; the scene in Snatch were the Lurchers are hunting the hare, filmed in slow motion with an excellent sound-track comes to mind, but, what is it with him?

Why can't he make a decent film about something other than London gangsters. If he makes the sequel, that will be four movies with the same subject.

He's a bit like a British Quinten Tarrantino; both seen as "bad boys" and in my opinion, Tarrantino only made two good movies, both about Gangsters, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. The rest were crap.

He's about a 3/4 trick pony. Snatch is basically Lock Stock re-written as how he would have made LS if he had the money in the first place. I dont mind the films that much, they were entertaining, but hes a poor mans Tarrantino without the skill and style of his own.

Just watched the trailer and it looks like more of the same. Half arsed acting by some of the cast and the other half putting on some "Guvnor" accent while wearing a suit.

Because that is all he can 'sell' to backers/financiers.

He could make romantic comedies, but nobody would finance them. He has to stick to what is commercial.

The movie biz is 99% about money.

(Actually 99.9%:- as 999 of 1000 scripts registered at the Screen Writers Guild are not produced. If the money was available, they would presumably all be made)

^ very true, and being Mr Madonna is a hard act to follow.

Quentin Tarantino I've always admired for his quirky style, not for everyone and his next gig 'Inglorious Bastards' will hopefully lift him out of the rut. He directed the final season episode of CSI last year, gripping.

A one trick pony that doesn't even do the one trick so well. Snatch was better than the far overrated Lock, Stock I thought but neither of them were that great. I'm not even a great fan of Tarantino, but he's a far better director than Ritchie will ever be.

Revolver was crap and bombed and had gangsters, including the Uber-gangster, Jason Steatham.

Ritchie has copied the style of Tarrantino, Tarrantino has copied the style of loads of films and directors.
Ritchie is about to direct Sherlock Holmes. I think someones career is on the line with that choice.

During a couple of the love scenes in that movie, Ritchie couldn't stay on the set because he got jealous.

Dunno - thought Kill Bill was pretty good. As far as Guy Ritchie goes if you are good at London Underworld movies, far worse genres in my opinion.

    No.

A decent film though, but for me I hated the fact that it destroyed the original message of the book, which I really enjoyed.

I liked a 'Layer Cake', never even realised there was a book. Thought the film was good though.

Let's be honest here gentlemen, Ritchie made student wank films for an American market with no basis in art or reality at all.

^The book was an excellent read, but the film ruined it, as the whole moral of the tale was lost in the film.

Briefly: In the book, the ultimate scene was that of the choice faced by Craig's charector, when he wakes up in hospital next to a policemen. He chose to cut his losses, take his (prior) profits and retire. In the film the charector is killed off, thus missing the entire point of the book.

Maddie - its a great read, buy it. Then you will get annoyed by the film and what it could have been.

^ Will do actually, hate to see a good book ruined by a bad film version.

    Thanks for the tip.

I thought Snatch was a good movie, but it was more the part played by Brad Pitt than the content or direction. it was a pretty accurate portrayal of an Irish gypsy.

    here are some real fights

there is nothing good about these people at all, they would steal the milk from your tea.

there were a couple in my primary school when i was there, they were by far the best fighters in the school, might have something to do with them being around 17 years old and we were only 11

I know I've always found his films (after Lock Stock) to be either sh*t, or, in the case of gangster ones, same old same old.
So I reckon this RockanRolla to yet another clone job. But we shall see
