I've driven that same road a few times, it looks like they've improved it quite a bit since then.
It didn't used to be a divided road and was mostly just 1 lane in each direction.
it wasn't unusual to have 2 cars (or GM Suburbans) side by side racing each other coming the other way.
I don't doubt that they average a smash every hour.
