The Kinks - better than the Rolling Stones

Without a doubt, though they are less popular.

    Funny old world.

You know damn well I will agree with you. I played lead guitar and singer in a band in 5th & 6th grade and we did excellent covers of 3 of the Kinks best songs. I must say, the entire school was shocked at the quality of the jams hammered out by 10 year olds at the school-wide assembly. I even mastered the English accent, but I was so nervous I almost peed my pants.

    1. You really got me.
    2. All the day and all of the night.
    3. Well respected man

We also did Gloria, Little Black Egg, Wipe Out, and several others by the Ventures, Dave Clarke Five and Beach Boys.

I don't know who is better, bit of a silly comparison really, quite sure they were both technically proficient.
but personally much preferred the kinks when I was younger.
had all their records on vinyl.

haven't listened to them for a long while now.

The Kinks knocked out some classic tunes, fantastic lyrics, but they did put out a fair few crap songs as well. Not sure I could name a great Kinks album like I could with the Rolling Stones. The Kinks are one of those bands where the compilation albums is all you need.

If push come to shove I'd say Rolling Stones were better musically in their day, but I have a soft spot for Kinks tunes because I used to listen to them so much when I was young. A hard call.

The Small Faces were another great band of the time.

Rolling Stones are far superior I'm afraid and are universally known. Same can't be said about the kinks.

I agree! They are both different styles. Its like comparing Vivaldi with Beethoven, or Van de Graf Generator with Soft Machine. The Kinks were bladdy good live though, saw them just once.

Both good but Stones better. BTW a few bands/musicians of their generation better than either.

Seen them both when I was much younger..had a friend who was a dead ringer for the singer what's his name the older brother in the Kinks? anyway they came to Glasgow and we would go up town and walk around the venue and he would get mobbed by the girls, didn't do me any good but. Still I'm a big fan of the Rolling Stones nobody can beat them

I preferred Steve Marriot's voice, but overall The Kinks really were the band for me. Tunes like Dead End Street, Autumn Almanac, Lola, Waterloo Sunset, the list goes on and on.

edit: ok quick guide to putting youtube vids on here needed please.

Did somebody say "The Clash" if you were talking about rock 'n roll.

The Kinks and Stones are both great - but the Stones prevail on sheer hits.

The kinks are good but the stones are far more prolific. The kinks did perhaps one albums worth of good songs. The Stones did several.
In fact it is the albums rather than individual singles/songs which makes the stones so great.

Yeah with the Stones you get the albums, with The Kinks a compilation will do. Don't think they ever made a classic album did they?

Would definitely say they did more than one album worth of good songs though.

The Stones are by far the superior band. The way they incorporated Blues and revitalised it...Albums such as Exile on Main Street and Sticky fingers are revolutionary. I do admire the Kinks but to compare the two is totally absurd. As a musician one can admire the penmanship of the Jagger/Richards collaboration. Keith Richards has a unique approach to playing guitar always playing around the beat and using the "G" tuning mainly. They also broke down the walls of lead and rhythm guitar playing by interweaving guitar parts. They must be seen live to be fully appreciated....some may say they are way past their due date and I must agree that their latest offerings over the last 15 yrs has not been up to par but having seen them live they could still blow most bands off stage.....Lets' be honest they really do not need to tour anymore but still do....for the passion...where are the Kinks now....case closed!
