The Stones are amongst the all time greats. I personally don't quite rate them at the pinnacle, because of the variability of their music. Some of their albums were great, some just OK. Live, they were virtually unparrallelled at their peak.
They commonly use a taut guitar technique, especially on their rockier numbers, which gives them that sort of 'garage band' sound. That is deliberate, not bad production.
