The Rolling Stones - what's so fucking good about them?

Look at any of the many polls or rock historian opinions and the Stones are usually in the top five.

Bands I would rate higher: Led Zeppelin (1st place) Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Allman Brothers. So, in my opinion, they would rank 7th. That's still pretty damn good.

I like the early Stones, best albums -

That album was a turning point, it was the best of their work before their music entered a very dark, antisocial phase during the peak of the Vietnam War.

The Who and The Rolling Stones, a tough call but I have to say the Stones gets it. Loved the Quadrophenia soundtrack though, good film too.

What about Madness?

Madness were alright, knocked out some good sing-a-long tunes, hardly a classic band though.

^^^ I like their song 'House of Fun', but why are we talking about a Ska band, mostly big in the 1980's. Hardly a monster of rock. :rolleyes:

The Stones are amongst the all time greats. I personally don't quite rate them at the pinnacle, because of the variability of their music. Some of their albums were great, some just OK. Live, they were virtually unparrallelled at their peak.

They commonly use a taut guitar technique, especially on their rockier numbers, which gives them that sort of 'garage band' sound. That is deliberate, not bad production.

I don't know how you can say songs like this are crap scampy-

Even though I only rate them 7th all time, I would rate them among the two greatest influencing bands of all time on rock, along with the Beatles.

Those two biggies really opened the music to a global audience. In terms of early British rock, I like the Kinks, the Dave Clarke Five, the Yardbirds, Animals, etc., better.

**Moody Blues, probably the best British band ever.

I spent a weekend with with this couple once, in South London. They only had Beatles and Stones records, or the radio. I tended to give both bands a wide birth, for years, rediscovering The Beatles later in life. However, I did grow to like 'Their Satanic Majesties Request'. My favorite track was Bill Wyman's 'In another land'. Interesting production and a jolly amazing cover.

Another Stones fan here. Green for Blake7 - not for an informative post but for sharing the same taste. 3 of the best albums ever.

I am a fan of The Stones too but i'm too young to know a lot of stuff from first time round, i get a buzz out of hearing something old for the first time then finding out who it was and finding more of there work.

Mike Oldfield and Squeeze aren't exactly as charismatic as Sir Mick, either, are they?

The Stones took American blues and fashioned it into melodic rock like no-one else, and there's never been a better guitar duo, for a band this big, than Mick Taylor and Kieth Richards, imho.

Anyway, the Stones certainly aren't good anymore, should've retired decades ago...

The Stones made some brilliant blues rock tracks and were a decent band during the early years, although I would also rate their song writing abilities far below the Beatles.

Songs like these certainly put the Stones in the top 3 or 4 all time greatest bands. Their staying power is testament to their ability to adapt to the ever changing pop music scene. However, I think it's about time they call it a day and let their legacy speak for itself.

Funny how music Triggers many memories, like waking up on a wet cold Sunday morning 42 yrs ago in some birds bedroom, I was looking at her ass while she was bending over to put on a Stones LP.
Or roaring along on the way home from the Bay of Islands, Full kite up and caught up in a heavy weather front, scared shitless and 40 Licks blasting out the deck speakers.
Many others, where you associate a snapshot of life with a particular group being played at the time.
