My first thought on this was why the f*ck would anyone do that, given the massive success of the movies (LoTR, the hobbit movies were an abomination).

So, on reading around , it seems this is set in the "second age", thousands of years before the events of LoTR.

My 'give a tiny fuck' meter might have flickered a bit had this been posted a year from now - which would still be a month before the projected release date.

I assume they have to spend the next 12 months adding the special effects that probably constitute 90% of production...

Prequels seem all the rage ... they can re-write the story that way, as long as they finish at the beginning.

I paid my hard earned to have the cinema experience of watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (set 60 years before the Lord of the Rings)

Peter Jackson said, after the filming of The Hobbit ... 'never again'.

Who directs the TV Series (just about everyone!)?
    J. A. Bayona* directed the first two episodes of the series, with Wayne Che Yip** directing another four episodes, and Charlotte Brändström*** directing another two
*Juan Antonio García Bayona is a Spanish film director. He directed the 2007 horror film The Orphanage, the 2012 drama film The Impossible, and the 2016 fantasy drama film A Monster Calls.

**Wayne Che Yip, also known as Wayne Yip is a British film director, most notably connected with Doctor Who.

*** Charlotte Brändström is a Swedish-French film director. TV shows: The Disappearance, Brigade spéciale, Vaugand

Amazon Studios' multi-million dollar Lord of the Rings TV series is moving to the UK from New Zealand for its second season.

Oscar-winning director Sir Peter Jackson used New Zealand's rolling mountains, meadows and forests as a backdrop for his famed Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.

Amazon said the switch "aligns with the studio's strategy of expanding its production footprint and investing in studio space across the UK, with many of Amazon Studios' tentpole series and films already calling the UK home".

The big-budget series, based on JRR Tolkien's books, has completed filming in New Zealand for its first instalment and is set to premiere on Prime Video in September next year.

Vernon Sanders, VP and co-head of TV at Amazon Studios, said: "We want to thank the people and the government of New Zealand for their hospitality and dedication and for providing The Lord Of The Rings series with an incredible place to begin this epic journey.

"We are grateful to the New Zealand Film Commission, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Tourism New Zealand, Auckland Unlimited, and others for their tremendous collaboration that supported the New Zealand film sector and the local economy during the production of Season One."

New Zealand's government was told of the move on Thursday and said it was disappointed at the decision.
